Actually, if you look at his first uploaded video it showcases his early work, unsanded Red Bull cans. I doubt the sanding has that much impact on the pliability of the can. It would also be difficult to do evenly and consistently, you would end up with thin spots and ultimately make the material more difficult to work with because of the inconsistency.

Yeah also one he does is a paint can with the label on it no sanding. However the lines he makes in the can with his nails helps with more geometric bends in the can like making a pop out just from my observations.

I used to do this in highschool but never thought to thin the can via sanding. Instead I did a ton of measuring/marking and used a needle tool, awl, and bone folder. Couldn't get it quite right due to the can thickness. Might try again someday.
