    One tip I use every year is to carry a small shed with me that fits in my pack. On slow days I like to toss the antler out in front or off to the side and train my eye to spot it.

    I agree with not getting discouraged being the most important. No matter how hopeless you feel you cant give up, youll find one eventually you just have to keep at it.

    Was out looking for my girlfriends cat earlier today and came across a shed, was excited cause I’ve never found one, picked it up turned around, low and behold there was the other one, nice 9 point shed sitting a couple feet apart out in the open, couldn’t believe it. Got an itch to find more now lol

    New to this so probably a dumb question. Is there a window where you need to look? As in is there a point where rodents will carry them away or something that prevents you from finding them?

    • @whitetaildna
      @whitetaildna  Рік тому +1

      It all depends on your situation. If you have areas you can walk where you know no one else is walking I’d wait until about mid March. Most bucks should have dropped by then. You could have some antlers that have been chewed up but you should be fine.

    Is it better to look while snow is still laying as to be able to follow the deer trails easier??

    • @whitetaildna
      @whitetaildna  3 роки тому

      There can be a lot of benefits to walking with some snow on the ground. In my opinion, the absolute best conditions are with enough snow so you can see where deer have been spending time, but an amount where most sheds won’t be covered up

    I have 100 acres of heavy forest, swap and a large stream/river runs near our house in Stow, MASSACHUSETTS. We see mostly does and a few bucks, ALL year round. The deer lick the salt lick and I find droppings and bedding areas. What time of year do they start to drop their antlers? Thank you.

    • @whitetaildna
      @whitetaildna  4 роки тому

      Hey, thanks for watching! That's super cool! I'd say bucks are typically dropping their antlers anywhere from late December through until about April. By April, in most cases, over 90% of bucks will have shed their antlers.

    • @newenglandnativeamericanar106

      I've been shed hunting Massachusetts and Connecticut for 30 years. Things have changed in the deer woods from when I first started. I live in CT and depending on the deer health and food sources impacts how long the deer hold their horns. I've found sheds in January but its usually because the buck ran himself ragged and he is in survival mode. I've seen bucks holding their horns in April. So anytime between January to April. But don't go to soon and blow your deer ...be patient and use trail cams.

    • @whitetaildna
      @whitetaildna  3 роки тому

      All depends if there’s other shed hunting pressure. If there’s no other pressure, I wouldn’t walk heavily until late February/early March. If there’s others walking the ground you are, then I’d start much earlier. Right about now

    I’m 18 it’s my first year Seriosuly shed hunting in wisconsin, I’ve walked over 20 miles slowly in good bedding and food source areas on deer trails. Haven’t found one yet.. is shed hunting really supposed to be this hard. It’s almost impossible to not be discouraged

    • @whitetaildna
      @whitetaildna  8 місяців тому +1

      I know exactly how you feel. It can be really tough! If you’re not walking ground that is the best of the best it can be a lot of miles in between antlers. I’ve had years I averaged a shed per 10 miles. Just keep grinding away!

    Is it too soon in January to look?

    • @whitetaildna
      @whitetaildna  2 роки тому

      It all depends if bucks have dropped antlers or not. But short answer is no it’s not, I start looking in January most years!

    I have found 3 sheds (two smaller legal sized antlers and the third is a massive old 5 points on one side) and the biggest one was found in the rain because I walked right by it 3 times before but the wetness changed the leaves texture and I was able to see it from 20 feet away like how did I miss that but it’s cause the rain

    I have a question???? I have spot i find sheds every year when the deer yard up…. But if its a lite winter and the deer dont yard up…. Do u have any tips for then… or is it the same but just spread outmore

    • @whitetaildna
      @whitetaildna  Рік тому

      Yeah the deer will definitely stay more spread out which in turn will make shed hunting a bit more difficult. Just will have to walk more and cover more ground!
