I liked the cow rug because many times when people feel they've spotted one it's often in a farming area, I also like the chair bottom left corner because it's kind of shaped like a spaceship and the legs are landing gear. 11:13 I like how Jane's theme room doesn't incorporate the theme in permanent ways. There's no UFO themed wall mural; there's no ceiling light fixture shaped like a UFO. All of it is done in a way that, if she ever decides she's tired of the theme, she can move on from it without it being a renovation project.

Also, move the pictures - especially the octopus - to another wall or another room. This would allow the octopus mirror and nautical light fixture to really shine. Beach houses should be playful with a touch of kitsch. It’s disappointing to walk into a beach house that has been decorated with so much restraint that it looks like it was plucked out of a generic suburb.

      I agree that octopus mirror was GORGEOUS! agree that the sink was a bit much, but it didn't look bad if it's not easy to replace. I do feel the artwork needs to be replaced tho, the softer almost watercolor artwork doesn't match with the darker intensity of the mirror/ sink. maybe some new, possibly more simple, streamlined light fixtures above that awesome mirror to let it really stand out! pretty nice bathroom regardless though! i enjoy a well done themed room lol.

    SOMEBODY TELL STEPHANIE THAT I’LL BUY THAT OCTOPUS MIRROR _TONIGHT_ (if she wants to replace it) I too am a fan of the cephalopods and the giraffes. I think you should take the yellow picture above the door in the bedroom and put it next to the yellow ones like it that you’ve got in the room on one big wall. Take that sweet ass octopus mirror and put it above the tall dresser in the bedroom, and put your fancy bottles of things on there. I think a quick fix is to mix up what you’ve got and disperse it, making the really amazing pieces stand on their own.

    I feel like in Shayna’s space, a little bit of rearranging the furniture could work so much more! Make that small piano the focus and place it on the wall where the couch is, change the black bookshelves for something else, or paint that whole wall black and make them disappear. Then put the couch in front of the small window where the curtains are is and bring in a pair of chairs where the piano wall is and make it a conversation area. Hopefully that makes sense hahaha

    • @lithopheliax61x5
      @lithopheliax61x5 2 роки тому +2

      YES! I also thought so - my suggestion would be to leave the piano at that wall, but move the book shelves beside the couch ( so that the couch is in between). makes the piano the main feature of this area of the room, and makes the proportions with the couch more interesting. and yes, if you can, get a new couch - maybe something colourful andd velvet to bring in some softness. add then velvet curtains as well and of course some art above the couch.

    The ocean-themed bathroom was so interesting to me, as was your opinion! I really liked the octopus mirror and art, the hardware and the countertop. I would have gotten rid of the more "nautical" elements with the sailor baskets below and leaned into more natural materials instead to bring the theme to "ocean" and not "coastal", just because that coastal/nautical theme is so much more overdone in my opinion.

      The mirror is artistic and graceful in a art nouveau style. If that's what you want, lean into it with this tip about getting a supportive wallpaper. Not sure what to pair it with, but check out some art nouveau sites, or maybe psychedelic 60s. But minimize the rest, so that the lively mirror itself is the hero piece in the room. Definitely change the lighting! I think change the sink because it competes for attention , and frankly, the mirror is better by far.
      I'd even get rid of the wood counter. Can't believe I'm saying that because I Love 💕 wood, especially live edge. But again in combo it all becomes kitch. Together they compete or it goes too far. Ultimately the decision would depend on the wallpaper you can find to go with the mirror. You might look up some pages posted by the sorry girls. One of them is Big into retro and I remember a page featuring fabulous papers that would go great with your mirror! I think Farrow and Ball or Anthropologie might also be useful resources.
      If this is a powder room, be bold. If this is a main bathroom I'd save the mirror for a different space. It's not large enough for a good vanity IMO. But definitely find a place to give the art nouveau mirror it's hero moment without becoming tacky or juvenile. That's the challenge! He's right that it'd be easier to go with the wood counter, because getting the right balance will require a minor miracle for a novice. But if YOU luv it, go for it. I personally luv art nouveau, even though it's hard to get right. Don't forget to consider how your color choices tie into the rest of the house.
      I know, he praises the blue. And it is a nice blue at that. But it's jarring IMO against the rest of the home, and ... Frankly, overdone in too many bathrooms all wanting a water theme in their water closet. See what I did there 😅. So, do better than my silly lame jokes. Don't use blue, or just very minor touches of it. Beaches, and rivers, and lakes, and under oceans where octopus live, and octopus themselves have so many other colors. Think brown and champagne. Powdery sandy (try Farrow and Ball for that sandy beach texture) cashmere color, and maybe pearlesent with hints of rose and plum and peach. Art nouveau is typically very feminine, so lean into the lux and fem and curves. Just an idea. Maybe a chandelier in art nouveau style. Lots of options and potential directions to go . But again, don't let anything steal the show from the mirror if you choose it. A little goes a long way if you want to avoid being tacky.
      Or do the exact opposite and go maximalist and drown the mirror out with over the top items, but that plan would be costly even on a small bathroom scale.

    If Alice's coffe tables are super sturdy, maybe she could order a custom slab of slate to sit on top of them. It would be more organic looking than the shiny black and still echo the dining room walls. I wonder if she would like moving the little desk from the living room into the dining room in front of the windows? It might be pleasant to look outside when working, and the desk could be used as a sideboard when needed - maybe not - probably already has a sideboard and doesn't want to block the windows. Simple light wicker baskets and not art on the walls would really help it look less cluttered. For the savanna bedroom I would remove all the statues, take the art from above the door and move it to above the dresser by that sloped ceiling, and like you mentioned make the ceilings all white then make the walls a greenish color in the same tones as the bath to create harmony between the two or get rid of all the savanna stuff and go with the cool coastal theme in the bed room doing the same colors as the bath and move the octopus art into there above the bed.

Like Nick, I noticed the sofa needs to move closer to the TV wall, and the club chairs should move closer to sofa (the seating area all within a 6 to 8 ft zone). A tall green tree will help bring some life and height to the room. Add something for kids to put up their feet when viewing TV such as upholstered ottoman, upholstered bench, or sturdy coffee table.

      @kellyschmidt5229 2 роки тому

      I would love to have a space that large for a family room Maraha. I’m wondering if you’re in the same boat as me though in that you can’t really have a lot of “hard things” like a stone or even a wood coffee table in that space. The space is for watching tv of course but also for kids who want to wrestle or goof around, even do yoga (as Nick implied) and that doesn’t go well with a solid coffee table. I do agree though with adding variation to the colour palette or materials so hopefully you can find a happy medium between a hard surfaced table and the ottoman you have. Maybe a bigger and more substantial ottoman in a different colour would do the trick. The kids could even sit on it or goof around on it :)

    You're so sweet. I love that you always uplift people and never put their choices down, just gently suggest ways to improve and which are realistic - well done

    I know you don't like theme rooms... but that UFO themed room was spectacularly tasteful and inviting. I saw humor and elegance combining in a wonderful way. It really could have gone very juvenile very quickly but it didn't. I actually thought I was looking at a photo from a design magazine. I also felt the same about Alice's room. It looked like an advertising photo! So well done. I don't know how Alice uses the space, but I suspect that perhaps that room gets the best natural light so that might be why someone (maybe her) chooses to have laptop time in that room. I can also imagine enjoying a morning coffee while checking emails/scrolling Instagram anywhere in the room. I also think maybe the bistro table might be more about the occasional board game or puzzle with the nice sunshine right there... or maybe its about having breakfast in the sunshine. Either way, I think its quite nice. I've known a few people who I think lived in a similar style layout of a home and in those homes, the kitchen and a "family room" were the other 2 rooms on the ground floor but neither got great light. Then upstairs there was usually 2 bedrooms, maybe 3. I don't think its a particularly big house, just very well appointed.

      That is so sweet! Thank you. Tasteful was what I was going for, but Nick calling it "not overwhelmingly weird" was good enough! Haha

    When I see each room, I see that it needs stuff, but am always amazed how you can pick out exactly what it needs! Love you!

    Always good advice and tips. I think I may submit pics of my living room - after I inspect every corner for dust/dirt! 😂

    I loved Alice’s living room. I wonder if she was following the dictum that every room should have something black in it to ground the space.

    I like the UFO room! He/she tastefully expressed what they like and did a great job pulling it together! 😀
