Another good video. This is great information for people, especially young people, about the importance of prevention and living a healthy lifestyle before serious issues arise
Thanks! And good point- you can eat mostly healthy from an early age and likely avoid these problems or have to turn your life and diet upside-down to try and fix them when you are older.
Always appreciate the effort your pour into content for us Parris! Perplexing development!! Just listened to a presentation on Continuous Glucose Monitor & interaction with other factors fed into a program- sounds promising. All The Best ~~ Duke
Thanks Duke! It is slow going trying to improve my diet by trial and error and checking my weight. A CGM would really help to speed things up and let me see what different foods do to my glucose levels. Hopefully soon!
My admittedly layman's understanding is that calcified plaque is more stable and far less likely to break away and cause dangerous blockages as uncalcified plaque. So calcified plaque is actually preferable to uncalcified plaque (though no plaque would be even better). It seems conceivable to me that you, like many of us, had a plaque buildup from decades of less than healthy eating. When you switched to wfpb eating your cholesterol levels dropped and you likely stopped doing more damage, but the existing damage was eventually made more stable through calcification, almost like scar tissue. If you keep your cholesterol levels low (and wfpb eating seems one of the best ways of achieving that) it stands to reason that you’re minimizing your chances of things getting worse. ApoB seems like a better marker for atherogenic particles, so you may want to see if your doctor will order one of those for you.
That's a good description of what I hope is happening. I wondered if it could be more a matter of existing plaque calcifying rather than new plaque deposits. Still, not a happy score to see. I have been hearing a lot recently about ApoB and that it is better than LDL as a marker of damaging cholesterol. I will look into that more- thank you!
No wonder you weren't all that "chipper" a few videos ago. I can feel your frustration. Hopefully, the magic bullet will make itself known and provide you with some guidance other than "you've been through a lot and are getting old". Good luck to you, sir.
Thanks Darryl. You summed up exactly what I have heard a lot of- "you've been through a lot and are getting old." I am working hard to be the exception and not the rule.
What you really want to be careful with is sugar. Cancer feeds on sugar. And yes, getting rid of as many starchy carbs as possible is great. Lean proteins, healthy fats (butter, olive oil, etc), Your morning fasting sugar should be under 100. 90-100 range is what to shoot for. Be aware that starchy carbs WILL spike your sugars. Even whole grains will. I am so very sorry for all of the health issues you’ve faced. I admire your courage to soldier on, research, and question. You remind me that I too can soldier on. I will continue to lift you up 🙏
Thanks Samantha. I look forward to being able to see how my blood sugar level reacts to different foods with a CGM. I have been making my best guess as to what to eat but being able to see my numbers right after eating and at 1 hour, 2 hours, etc should be very enlightening!
Coronary artery calcification might contain calcium oxalate. (National Institute of Health). Dates are very high in oxalates. Susan Owens has an excellent site to help in estimation of oxalates.
Dr Esselstyns daughter Jane and his son Rip also have You tube channels.Jane works with her mother Ann who did the recipes in your book. The Esselstyns (Dr Caldwell B and Ann) are two very healthy older people.Jane and Ann demonstrate all kinds of healthy recipes.
First off disclaimer, I am obviously not a medical professional and my comment should not be taken as medical advice. Advice. That said, I would encourage you to stick with the plant-based side of things. Where the bulk of the evidence is. I have a very young nephew who went keto and nearly ruined his body. I'm talking early twenties, and he experienced massive muscle loss due to a strict keto diet. Keto does not make scientific sense, and it does not work long-term. Most weight loss from keto is simply water weight. A couple things that have work for me to help get my blood pressure and numbers more under control is that I have cleaned up my diet quite a bit, and I have massively reduced the amount of caffeine that I am taking in! This obviously includes sodas, but it also includes normal caffeinated tea. Caffeine can also mess with our body. And I would also encourage you not to worry too much over numbers. A couple doctors have told me over the years that numbers are a good general measurement of some things, but no one is perfect, and no one is going to have perfect numbers. Especially given the intense medical treatments you mentioned you have gone to gone, your body could take some time to recover from Sid treatments. In fact, there is a lot of evidence that chemo /radiation has lasting health affects. It's unfortunate, but it's the way it is. But please don't get lured into a false sense of promise with keto and meat-based diets. They are not good for us!
The definition of keto is the elimination of carbs and sugars from the diet. What are the essential carbs and sugars that the body needs to survive? There are none. Keto is done to get the body into a state of ketosis. When we are born, we are born in ketosis. Unnecessary sugar and carbs is what takes us out of ketosis.
I haven't gone through the Arby's drive-thru yet! 🤣 I am just frustrated that doing what I thought was right left me with additional serious medical issues. At this point I agree that I am best off staying the course. I would just like to have that CGM so I don't end up straying too far from it.
@@vegasrob28 If carbs are so unnecessary, why does the human body Make them when humans don't eat them? Because that is exactly what ketosis is period your body making carbs with what it has period we need carbs to live period our brains literally feed on carbs.
@@vegasrob28 please understand. I'm not trolling, and my comment is not meant as argumentative. However, I can tell you from a firsthand basis that keto messes up the body long-term. C, in my younger days, I used to eat a very high-fat low-carb diet. It nearly killed me! To put it bluntly, my digestive system was pretty much locking up. Before I turned 40 years old! Yep, I got so I couldn't crap. Since changing my diet, eating a more plant-based diet, I am healthier than I have ever been. I have gotten my blood pressure down by cutting way back on caffeine and junk food. Primarily a plant-based diet that is granted kind of high in carbs. But, I am getting the essential fine nutrients our bodies need. I am also getting lots of fiber. This diet has literally brought me back from close to death. So, as I said, no disrespect. I've tried the high high fat high protein way. It led me down at a very bad road that was about to kill me.
Parris, I've given up dates myself. I haven't had a date in years! The women of today (with their nose piercings and tattoos), just don't do it for me. . .
I suspect you and I may not be their target audience. 🤣 And I wasn't a fan of tattoos for the longest time but learning what they mean to the people that get them I can kind of appreciate them now. No plans to get one myself though.
Yes, but I only mentioned that age because with proper care and feeding the human body isn't "naturally" decrepit with age. But doctors seem to think getting cancer and heart disease happens naturally with age.

Hate that you are going through this. I pray for the best. Keep working it.
I appreciate that- thank you!
My mom has extreme heart failure !!!!! Due to cancer hormone blockers !!!!! Dude get in a whole foods raw food diet !!!!!
I have been eating a whole foods plant based diet for over five years. Maybe it would have been worse if I hadn't been...

Your story resonates for me. I am in the same situation. Your current dietary approach is likely to optimise your health.
I am giving it my best shot. I hope you can overcome these side-effects, too. 💪💪

I hadn't known that about dates. I am reading a book right now about how uric acid is an overlooked factor in a number of health issues too.

Yes, I knew his son was a firefighter here in Austin and came out with his own line of healthy foods- the PlantStrong line.
So sorry. Hard to manage health issues.
Thank you.

@TechnicallyLenard the body burns fat, not carbs while in ketosis. It's the preferred fuel by the body.

If you make it to 80 consider yourself blessed
If I do, I definitely will.
