Thank you for the clear explanation of the purpose and process of bonding! I’m going to feel so much safer being confident that my pool is bonded properly.
WOW! It's been a while since I've had my above ground pool and the new codes...again WOW! never heard of bonding. Last pool I had was the grounding rod and then ground the pool and the pump to that. I have a lot to catch up on. Thanks for the video...looks like I'll be digging and laying copper wire to the pool. Excellent demonstration!
I saw you answered my question via Earl Ficken 2 years ago. Thanks for the info. I will now bond my pool when I'm done. Thanks again for explaining this process.
Great explanation. Appreciate you sharing it with all us DIYers. I have 1 question. I have a resin above ground pool with steel sidewall. How do I attach the ground to the sidewall steel ? Thanx from Florida
Pools should now come with bonding lugs and one in the skimmer..that should be the law so that it takes any guess work and stops people from putting it in the wrong place.
Hello, trying to understand your UA-cam video. At approximately 6:14, you mentioned "don't cut the wire". What has me confused is this is the starting point and it doesn't just stay on the reel, Where do you attach it to? Thanks!
Am i missing something? All videos show the copper wire ending at the skimer then pump. Can i start at the skimmer then to the 4 contacts on the pool and then finish at the pump? I would look so much cleaner then seeing all that copper wire hanging! Thanks
Ty for this. Now i have an intex soft sided metal xtr pool, and even though it is sided by the liner, we still have to bond it as per code. Question, are the over the side skimmers from intex, etc compatible with these bonding plates??? Very good video.
He means don't cut it to go to the skimmer. You'll have to cut your length off the spool for the wire. He just means once you cut that full length of wire, don't cut it again. You want one continuous strand
When you say, you touched the pool in 4 places, do you have to touch it with a metal to copper connection? I ask because my uprights on the pool are plastic, so is the ring that holds the pool wall. I'm not sure where I should touch the pool?
So I have the copper wire. My pool is in the ground. Is it ok that it is touching the steel in several points around the pool in a consistent run? I didn't have enough to go the entire way. But the pool is steel and it's all connected.
How do you bond an above ground resin pool? There is only one place and thats where the siding frame ties together and do not want to drill holes in siding, so there is no where to put the bonding lugs.
Question: sorry I have watched this a couple times. But when starting your copper wire around pool, where does the beginning of the wire attach to? Does the beginning of wire start and complete circuit at skimmer? Or does it start at the first point on pool support?
@rozebiz I finally found other information that says to get a skimmer bonding plate. Start at bonding plate, bury the wire all the way around pool and terminate from beginning location. Then take copper bonding wire from pump and attach to skimmer plate as well. I have an all resin sided pool so there is no where to drill on posts of pool. Just one continuous wire around circumference of pool wall about 12 inches away from pool.
How do I bond a pool that has all resin connectors? The uprights and top rails are metal, but the resin connectors do not allow the metal top rails, the bottom or top track or up rights to touch each other so I'm not sure how to bond the pool.
How do you VERIFY you actually have equipotential voltage across all bonded components? 1) how do you test the main panel earth voltage as a reference point and 2) how do you subsequently verify all bonded structures read the same voltage ?
My above round ground pool 10x10x52 sits on a concrete slab should I bond the pool the same way but except run the wire to a rod in the earth since I can’t dig a 6” trench around the pool?
You want the ground all around the pool to have the same potential. I don’t know the best way to proceed with a existing concrete deck. I recommend checking with a professional electrician.
I'm in the process of upgrading my pump and salt colinator on my intek vinyl pool. The Hayward pump and the aquatrol have a place to bond. Should I bond the pump and control? I'm also going to put in a Hayward skimmer so should I bond that also? I want to know my pool is safe. Thanks.
Canadian Electrician here. I haven't done grounding/bonding around pools before. What you're describing here sounds like a ground ring, not bonding. I've only installed ground rings around power generating facilities like Cogen plants and around large backup diesel generators for hospitals ect. I know the difference between grounding and bonding but I still don't understand why you need a ground ring around the pool. Wouldn't an insulated equipment bond wire from that plate to the pump chassis be the way to go? If not, why?
It is bonding, not grounding. You are creating an equipotential bonding plane to reduce voltage gradients. It is controversial, but it is required by our National Electrical Code section 680.26
Think of throwing a rock in a pool of water and watch the ripples go out in all directions. You would get a different potential across those ripples. I'm a journeyman lineman and its important for us to understand this. If we have a phase to ground incident you need to stand still or take very small steps because current runs through the ground like that ripple in the pool. You take a big step and you have one voltage in one leg and another voltage at the other. It can kill you. So that circle ground around the pool makes a lot of sense to me. I'm fixing to upgrade our intek pool we bought last year to a Hayward system and I came across this because I wanted to see if I needed to bond the pump. I'm glad I found this video. Since its a soft sided pool I take it I just need to bond the pump.
All my pool needed was A bonding plate in the pump skimmer and the #8 bare wire ran to the grounding lug on the back end of the pump. Simple and safe. This is according to the pump manufacturer that I purchased. 6/23
I have an oval pool and the buttresses are steel. Could I connect to the buttresses? That seems like a better spot than putting holes in the other uprights.
Thanks for the info. I need to make sure ours is correct. A local family was found dead in their pool, not confirmed yet but many people believe faulty pool bonding.
We dont recommend Salt. It is corrosive to all metal, thus voids warranty on all our pools. I've never installed them and cant answer your question as I dont know the answer
I am in the process of purchasing a Coleman 20 x 48 above ground pool. Does this type of pool needs to be bonded as the legs does not seem to look metal. and the pool liner seems to be vinyl by the looks of it
FYI - Have a 18’ pool , 96’ of copper wire was enough to bond it , also I continuously ran the wire to my four points of contact, I didn’t splice a separate piece of wire to the metal posts, some places require a continuous loop and didn’t want to take a chance and get it wrong. Hope this helps someone
I don't think anyone bonds in Nebraska, the company we used is reputable, they use another company that does 90% of above ground pools in Omaha installation. No bonding and no mention of bonding. I'm kinda pissed. Is there a reason why?
I was told by my pool installer that because the posts are resin in my pool I just need to run the #8 ring around the pool and complete the bond to the water and motor bond. They said they left a #8 wire that they connected to the metal ring around the bottom of the pool that is steel. That will complete the shell bond.
You have mentioned in your video to run the bonding conductor around the pool 12 inches from the pool wall , that is not the NEC and you should correct it to read what the code actually is and that is 18-24 inches from the side of the pool wall, 4-6 inches deep. please try to get your facts straight before posting videos.
I've watched 15 videos and this explanation was by far the best. Straight to the point.
Thank you for the clear explanation of the purpose and process of bonding! I’m going to feel so much safer being confident that my pool is bonded properly.

great video. thanks for making!
Great videos, question for you, we have a semi inground pool 21' round all the uprights are composite (not metal) so how would I bond it?

Oh and a pair of pliers to. Your a real pro.
Beating a stake into the ground, vs burying a copper wire in the ground how are those not effectively the same things?
Thanks for a great video. About to do this. Seems easy enough. We’ll see!

Great explanation! How would you do this for 1o foot round ABG pool on concrete slab?
Perfect explanation. Thank you
Also can you go out further out then 1ft to like 4ft so I would not need to tear up my landscaping around the pool
can I splice on another length if the copper is to short ???
My swimming pool was bonded, but there’s a small leak near the skimmer where it was bonded. How do I fix it?
At 6:14 in video you say "don't cut the wire" , I know its not left on the spool. Where does it attach? Thanks!
He means don't cut it to go to the skimmer. You'll have to cut your length off the spool for the wire. He just means once you cut that full length of wire, don't cut it again. You want one continuous strand

Now how about if you have an aluminum pool with resin components ar a complete resin pool?
So at one end of our pool we have a small deck with loads of gravel under it. Will we have to remove the gravel to burry the copper? 😖
How do you bond an above ground resin pool? There is only one place and thats where the siding frame ties together and do not want to drill holes in siding, so there is no where to put the bonding lugs.
Where do you start the wire and where does it end
The Copper is laid in the ditch all the way around the pool in the ground?

I have a resin pool. The only metal is on the wall. Where would I attach the copper wire at the 4 points?
Wall track or on the wall below the top of cove, could cause steel pools to rust so seal with enamel paint

Yes

I'm not an electrician or have any specific training. It's about creating a field so you cant reach a different potential. All I know

monday 3 drowned in n.j. not a electric problem..could not swim..
@@topgun51 thanks because non bonding doest cause death it just gives you small shock of my understanding
Where to buy this part ??
Can't see what your asking about, but if you put part number into Google, if it exists, it will pop up

Is there any proof that this works?
where is your starting point on the #8? any point? also are you attaching to the posts or the metal pool itself?
You can if they are metal
When you said touch the pool wall (bottom ring?) how is that done? How do affix (attach) the wire to the pool wall?
You may want to view this video on how to do the wiring. ua-cam.com/video/tlqvG1DIfWw/v-deo.html
do i need to pull the ground rod out that the electrician put in years ago? he only grounded both ends.of the pool 15x30 and the motor/pump
No leave it and use it, no harm
What about built in pools? Is it the same way?
I have a stupid question.. If you bond the pool in the way you explain, do you also have to ground the pool?
No
MGK Pools Inc thanks!!
Bonding is the opposite of grounding so I heard. You don’t want to ground the pool
Thanks
How do you bond a semi in ground pool with brick work around it ?
I am trying to deter corrosion on an above ground pool with saltwater system. Will this help?
Cant say... An anode might, but I would not use a salt system.
Do you have to attach the bonding wire in four places even if all the components are resin except the pool wall?
Yes. you can attach bonding wire to the wall down in the cove area. 1 inch off the floor you should not puncture the liner

Hi Mike, on an Aquasport in ground pool can I put the cooper wire 30 inch deep in to the ground? Thanks.
Read local code... but most should be 12 inches from the pool wall, 6 inches from surface.
680.26 (B) (2) (b) (4) 2017 states 18" to 24" from the inside wall of the pool for paved or unpaved surfaces @@MGKPoolServiceLowell
What gauge wire?
Most videos I watch they used #8 bare solid copper wire
I’ll send you a tape measure for Christmas.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Our code still needs a grounding rod 🤷🏻♂️
If you bury a bare copper wire all the way around the pool, YOU HAVE GROUNDED THAT CIRCUIT.
