CONTEXT:
After two whole years and over two million views, UMG decided it’d be fun to remove the documentary I spent four months of my life crafting. With the sheer amount of claims, I don’t know which one specifically got it taken down, which is why I opted not to appeal and instead took this as an opportunity to make the video better and longer than it was before. I’ve added more analysis, full coverage of Donda, and of course done my best to remove every bit of claimable music I stupidly included the first time. I know this isn’t a completely new video, but I’ve gotten numerous requests to bring this one back since the day it was deleted. It’s always been a personal favorite of mine and I wanted to do what I could to restore it. I know some ppl won’t care but for the ones that do, I hope you enjoy. Thanks for reading this mess of a tangent.

When leno asked Kanye about how his mom would have felt, you can just see him shut down. It felt so raw, seeing his realization and pain over what his mom would think :(
i can't imagine being in his shoes and having to hear on live tv that your mother, who was everything to you, would be disappointed in what you have become.

It hurt to watch. Sometimes interviewers take it too far. I know they are suppose to ask thoughtful and difficult questions but I feel like he knew it would hurt him.
i'm always disgusted when i see that clip because that was just such a horrible thing to ask to ye. leno asking whether his mother, the most important person in his life and the one he loved the most, would be ashamed of what he's done is just absolutely gut-wrenching and the fact that he's stuck there and he has to answer it makes it worse

As someone with Bipo. I found it extremely heartbreaking and absolutely concerning, the way people were hyping him up during his Presidential campaign. ESPECIALLY when he was having that breakdown, during his press conference. Just absolutely sobbing and people were cheering him on. I thought of all my unmedicated breakdowns and how dangerous it would have been, if people were hyping me. Cosigning my rants and telling me I was a genius. When what I really would need, is someone who cared enough to stop me and get me some proper help. It just showed he really didn't have anyone who care enough to take care of him. Whenever I see him doing something else erratic, it reminds me to take my meds and thank my loved ones, for being there for me.
Wow that's so insightful. I think most of us don't understand bipolar enough to have that insight so thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'm a health professional and even I never fully considered that. The people cheering him on probably believe they are helping him and supporting him.
When I had done extensive research on bipolar disorder for my psychology class last year I started making real life connections to apply what I had learned to real world examples, and seeing how people had treated Kanye was heartbreaking to say the least. You are absolutely correct, people hyping him up during manic or even depressive episodes is even more damaging to his mental health, and it pains me to see all the yes men cheering everything he does on, when what he really needs is people at his side telling him how some of his actions are just not ok, and get him the help he desperately needs.
I'm borderline and know someone who has had bipolar the whole time we've been best friends. it is truly a different world she lives in when she's manic and it can last for months. it can be a huge blessing but also a huge curse and I worry about her delusions going too far sometimes.
I have BPD and It's been rough this last year cause I left an abusive relationship and it happened like him, my mania and depression was like a rollercoaster, some things I do not remember and some things I do and the worst part is that I was into this low moment when It was too obvious I was not okay and nobody wanted to be a friend cause they thought I was being "problematic" or "crazy". I can understand how it feels and makes me so upset that people can't understand bipolar disorder or BPD, too stigmatized
Hmm. I'm not American so here... We don't really throw around such diagnosis.. But i think perhaps I might be considered bipolar, and know others who would also be.
I try to help myself by grounding myself in my work and the material.
I've never had anyone pander to my crazy thoughts.
So it's been easy, with time, to bottle them, and then ignore them.. And mostly forget them.
And of course we have to accept our position in reality, most of society and occurances will always be outside our influence or control - beyond our direct actions.
Perhaps we are fragments of God (equally with everyone else), but a far cry from 'being God' obviously.
But I have known people who flew a little too close to the sun and never really recovered or reintegrated into society.
I don't put much faith in mental health workers, from personal experience.
An individual really just needs the capacity to be able to make their own adjustments and repair themselves, and there is definitely enough information available to 'us' in order for that to happen.
If someone is too far gone.. Well that's just too bad. At least that would seem to be how it is here, from experience.

I like Jesus and he was a great teacher but I’m not even sure that the people that wrote his story were correct. None of the New Testaments were written by anyone that knew Jesus personally. In fact, the earliest book was written 70 years after Jesus died. So it was all history passed down orally. A lot of personal interests by powerful men and people that wanted control. The closest to the real bible are the dead sea scrolls and they don’t speak anything about Jesus dying for our sins. They speak of Jesus teaching people about earth and mother nature. So, sorry, I don’t know if you have actually done your research but you need to read a bit more. I promise you wont go to hell for looking for the actual truth.

I, just now, am watching this video and that is the first thing that came to me, right off the bat it is humanizing an artist that, be it by both unadulterated ambition and circumstance has become almost an entity, like i know for who he portrays himself to be, and what he does, which has made him seem to be almost unreal to me. So hearing abot his upbringing and all almost made me recoil, like, what?
Just wanna say that as someone with bipolar, this breakdown is massively important in humanizing us, but also showing our constant private rise and fall. Kanye’s journey is highly representative of an inner journey, and you’ve done an amazing job with research and showing those ups and downs. Thank you 🙏🏼

I think this doc can teach a lot of a people about writing other's off due to mental health issues or taking media portrayals at face value in general. It shows us just how wrong or short sighted about ay one person and their behaviour we can potentially be. I have bpd, autism, depression, anxiety, cptsd and possible bipolar.

I wish you didn't have to remove so many of the clips of Kanye's music, but the extended version makes up for it! This is so good jawbree. I never really liked Kanye or his music but watching your original documentary actually gave me some respect for him and his genius. I actually found myself thinking that he seems like a cool dude.
Kanye may have mental issues, but it shows through his actions depending on his environment. Kanye’s worst moments were when he was stuck with Kim, and the rest of her fake ass family. Kanye’s never been about just the money or image, so imagine having them surround you for years and years. The moment he was free from them it showed in how quickly he started improving and obviously changing for the better. Kanye’s definitely a dope dude

@Amber Craig honestly kinda agree. His mother was kind of like his moral compass, and when he lost his mom he was misguided and confused. You can really see this because most of his controversies (besides the George bush one) was after the death of his mother.

this is the best kanye west documentary on youtube. the inclusion of 'never see me again' solidifies that statement, because people will just talk on how he was in a rough patch in his career and move on. But to actually convey the extent at which he was mentally down by explaining the sample and the suicide theory being supported by songs on MBDTF referencing suicide is just amazing.

This doc actually inspired me to give Kanye a serious listen when before I had written him off as a self-absorbed jerk. I walked away with a new appreciation for his contributions to music, even if I still wouldn't call myself a fan

I was diagnosed with manic/ depressive or now know as bipolar when I was 15. I've been on meds ever since. With and without meds life is an uncontrollable rollercoaster ride of a life. I'm 54 and if you can't stay on meds you just do more and more damage.its a bitch but you have to take responsibility at some point.

I always find it interesting how so many people are "concerned" about mental illness and those suffering from it, until that mental illness manifests itself in some way that they find personally abhorrent, or problematic, and when the person is someone that they didn't like to begin with.

I honestly think modern Kanye is a cry for help. Like dude literally went from having a phenomenal mother who was willing to rent a booth for her 13 year old because she saw something in him no one else did to being alone in the world. No woman or friend is going to hold up to Dr. Donda because that was his mother and his ultimate, number one, and first fan. I don't think (and I'd say he probably doesn't either) that anyone will love him as Dr. Donda did. And instead of getting help, he is spiraling on a large platform. Unfortunately, he's not unique. This isn't rare. People spiral when they parent die all the time. The only difference is he has the unfortunate circumstance of being put on a world stage and everyone watching him spiral. Dude needs to get help for himself, but unfortunately I don't think that will happen and no one else can help him because he's not a threat, he's just an outlandish figure we can all giggle at and thank our lucky stars where not him. I got to spin out on my shed floor for a year after my dad died... going through it all in its intensity.. in peace, with my husband not far away but no one out to gain anything by seeing me fall... sadly in a case like this he has no one to love him for the Kanye like his mama knew.., and even more importantly.. he has no one he can trust..

Honestly, I'm impressed by the levels of edition this video has, I think this may be the best edited video on this platform, at least when it comes to something done by individuals instead of corporations. You should feel proud of that, because editing and your way of talking made this long video an easy ride, even when I had to stop watching a couple times because of time.
After watching this video, I can say my opinion about Kanye has shifted a little, but not that far from what I thought before, and it's not really a good thing. I understand and celebrate the guy being one of the most important names in hip hop history, both as a rapper and a producer, and I fully understand the media has a thing on him because he's become such an easy target, but when it comes to Kanye as a public figure, I think understanding him is far simpler than what lots of people tend to think:
Kanye seems to me a guy who wants to have his cake, and eat it too. He wants to be pretty much the advocate for people who struggles with mental illnesses (bipolar disorder in this case) while bragging about not getting the help he clearly needs because, and I quote, "pills kill his creativity." I don't really mind about the message he sends with that because, at the end of the day, he's a human and not a machine, but you can't use bipolar disorder as a shield to hide behind after doing shitty things and then refuse to act to improve as a person. Lots of people with bipolar disorder, or even more complicated issues with their mental health, at least try to understand their problems are not excuses to harm other people.
Let's be honest for a second: I fully agree Kanye doesn't deserve the constant harassment media put him under, but, did Taylor Swift deserve what happened to her at the VMAs, and then having her carreer almost destroyed by what both Kim and Kanye knew were lies? Did Billie Eilish deserve to be targeted by Kanye just because she cared for a fan not to die? Does Kim Kardashian deserve to be in a spot where she practically has to beg Kanye to stop posting all that stuff about her and their children online, just for him to post said conversation on his Instagram, all while being in a relationship with someone else? Patterns aside, if you think the answer to at least one of those questions is a no, then you understand my point. I'm all for humanizing Kanye, but not for dehumanizing the people he went against practically because yes.
To me, modern Kanye is not insane, and is actually a person pretty easy to understand. He's his own worst enemy, and his public role of believing himself a God truly got him at some point. The guy is a musical genius and I won't be the one who denies his legacy, but he has the resources to find the help he clearly needs, yet he refuses to get it because he practically surrounds himself with yes-men, and he knows he will have the support of lots of his fanbase regardless of what he does. Again, the man is in an incredible amount of pain I can't even imagine, but that's not an excuse to ignore his shitty behavior. That's not de-estigmatizing mental illnesses, that's adding another layer of misinformation.
The saddest part about this is that all of this has actually diminished my opinion on his music, not because "OMG THE GUY'S A MONSTER" because I listen to people who have said and done FAR worst shit than Kanye, but because... how am I supposed to believe the so-called introspection of his lyrics, when he falls over and over again to the traps he sets to himself? Put any of this next to a Mr. Morale or a Melt My Eyez, and there's no comparison in this. I honestly hope Kanye can redeem himself, but I see it more and more difficult each passing day.
This take is criminally under-liked. I honestly agree fully. I hope J doesn't idolize him as much now that all this information has come out. I don't get how people can romanticize people like Kanye, who time and time again prove their messed up actions to be repetitive.
Just addressing the last part of this, I do think despite his actions, the introspection is easily still very sincere. I've met despicable people who were so self aware at times, but keep falling into an unhealthy cycle. everyone does something for a reason and those people have to not just find a reason to strive for change, but a reason to not go back to how they were before. You can be self aware and in a toxic loop of behaviour at the same time, i think. Doesn't mean they're justified in how they act obviously, but that's how most of these situations are, nobody is ever just fucked up and crazy for no reason. As someone with bipolar, I think it should never serve as a blanket excuse for behavior, but it's sometimes a way to understand part of how someone ends up in a certain spot. With bipolar, you can be plenty introspective, but when a manic episode kicks in it can completely blind you to any rationality you held. It's a very inconsistent state of mind.

This has really opened my eyes on Kanye. I never liked him and the only people who liked him around me were just rap and hip-hop fans in general. I can surprisingly relate to him a lot, turns out. I have a lot of respect for him now and I hope he continues to focus on his music and his family and finds happiness. I hope he’s sincere when he says he wants to rechannel his personality into better causes. @@moldymayo2653 bipolar here. It's a never ending cycle. Moments of reflection. It's always the same chaotic down and high. It's a circle. There is going back, which is why the manic episodes alone make bipolar one of the most severe conditions going. When I was diagnosed, a psychiatrist literally told me "you don't want this". It's a horrific cycle and if you don't get medication that works or proper treatment, you can't escape or even notice you're in the spiral.
Edit: I wish people with depression would acknowledge us bipolar folk have a different experience of many things you guys do. Please acknowledge we do not have a depression diagnosis

I don't know, I kind of thought it was a really good angle to take. That's the only time I'd seen Kanye feel like what he did was wrong there. And it absolutely was wrong and so disrespectful to Taylor Swift. He needed somebody to remind him of what his mom would have thought.
Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn't avoid talking to people who are grieving about the loved one they lost. People who have lost loved ones often say they wish people would do it more often. Even though the loss is sad, it's comforting to talk about their loved one. I get that this is a little different since he is admonishing him, but I feel like even here, it was a little bit of tough love.
I think he was suffering from a lot mentally and he could have used a reminder of his mother from someone who cares in private as a push for Kanye to get some help. Leno was so out of line to do that publicly and because of the way he did it, it’s clear he didn’t care about him. When people suffer from bpd, they can do stupid stuff. Really stupid stuff. They need understanding, not public shaming. I’m sure Leno saying that did not help him so, what’s the point? If people think that would make him to take responsibility for what he did or face the consequences, they clearly don’t understand what it’s like to struggle the way he has mentally. He’s not facing his actions, he’s being sent further down the spiral he is already on.

Hmm. You can definitely tell this was video was produced by a fan. Good documentary on how revolutionary Kayne was, but it glosses over the parts the subject in the title of the video. After watching a few other videos on this channel beforehand, I was expecting a lot more of a deep dive into his actions and consequences of his behaviour over the fandom and gushing content. It's not bad, but I would definitely say the video title requires an update.
He actually went and did it again.. Your dedication is genuinely astounding and I really hope for you that this one doesn't get taken down - Mad respect for the effort and amazing job!

First off; beautiful documentary with incredible editing and work ethic. Two, I rewatched Kanye saying “Bush doesn’t care about black people” several times, it was so perfect. And third, while I agree with alot of your points, I do think that some more critical perspectives towards Kanye were maybe skimmed over. Im diagnosed with bipolar along with adhd, both can cause extreme volatile emotions or difficulty regulating those emotions, which I can see in Kanye and acknowledge, but when I finished your video, I just felt like there was no responsibility to be held for Kanye. And I was confused if I was the outlier in this opinion as someone in the bipolar community, but as I scroll through the comments, I see that a good amount of people with bipolar seem to agree that there wasn’t much responsibility pinned to Kanye. I learned a lot about Kanye in this video, but I don’t know if this so much delved deep into ALL the madness of Kanye, or just the easily justified and explainable madness. Bipolar is a bitch, don’t get me wrong, but having the finances and resources to get medication and therapy puts this a bit more into perspective compared to those who live in poverty and will never be able to have access to those things. Kanye was able to be diagnosed and get therapy and medications, but the next moment he’s bragging about “not negotiating with therapists”. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. You can’t use your bipolar disorder as an excuse to say horrible shit about slavery or your wife’s private medical history, put your family through terrible times, and borderline stalk your ex wife and threaten her new bf and treat her as property, all the while joking about not giving a fuck about therapy and meds. Not only that, but alot of his fan base refuse to even acknowledge this horrifying behavior towards his ex spouse, which is something I feel should have been disposed in a video that is about uncovering his madness. Kanye has always had the resources to get help, he’s had his family hold his hand and ask him to get help. Bipolar doesn’t automatically make you act entitled to your ex who is a whole human being. That’s just a part of being a shit person. A part of it will always be the celebrity ego, that’s understandable and bound to happen, or the mania, but he doesn’t get to treat others like trash and act like an abusive ex and have it labeled as bipolar. I don’t want that labeling my community. Kanye can blow off all the meds and therapy that a normal bipolar person would need to function in society because he has the money and power to act outside of therapy. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have to be held accountable to the normal society morality, or baseline morality. So all in all, very well done video in reviewing Kanye as an artist and in dissecting the moments that can be lightly brushed away without delving into too much

I recall at one point, Kanye has said he doesn’t take medication for his bipolar disorder bc he said he “believed it interfered w [his] creativity”. But it’s very clear it is interfering w his life. It breaks my heart every time he publicly struggles w his disorder, bc even w medication bipolar disorder is something that’s difficult to deal with and manage, but he’s raw dogging it for no reason.
There’s not no reason. He’s a professional creator and doesn’t want his mind fucked with. Those meds can put people in a weird place and some just prefer to be Bi Polar.

I took meds for my anxiety and depression. I used to be an artist and I've been on meds for 3 years. I haven't drew anything in those years. It really can’t be understated how monumental his contribution to the hip hop music world was when he produced the blueprint 2 for Jay Z. It would be the first time Kanye completely changed the music industry by creating a sound with Jay Z that would be replicated throughout the 2000s across mainstream hip hop and pop.
As you mentioned in the video sampling has always been a part of hip hop. But In the 90s sampling had gone through more of a decade of being out of style in the mainstream. People favored beats from producers like Timbaland and Swiss beats that were all synthesized. They were still sampling sounds but a sample wasn’t the feature of the beat.
Also, most rappers were making albums with a different producer for each track. So when Jay Z dropped his magnum opus with only one producer, an unknown college kid, with samples? It was revolutionary and changed the game. Sampling in hip hop can de divided into two groups, before Kanye and after Kanye.
Then, when 808s came out. There was no singing in rap. You either sang R&B or you rapped. You did not do both. When he dropped that album it was so unorthodox I remember a lot of people, myself included, didn’t like the album. It was also very emo. Again, hip hop was rarely emotional. Never vulnerable. He wasn’t gangster that’s fine. We kind of overlooked that one. But singing about a breakup or about your feelings?? I think we take it for granted now that it was a masterpiece but day 1? Hip hop heads were divided. But then we listened to it a few more times and we’re like nah we can’t deny this is amazing. And that paved the way for Drake and for the emo rappers of today.

This is an absolutely incredible documentary. Well researched and documented, it gave me insight into things I'd been wondering for a long time - like why does he have such an amazingly dedicated fanbase? This is a really interesting piece of work and, is in itself, art. Awesome job.
This was such a fantastic video. You could tell the creator had deep respect and empathy for Kanye, but he also wasn't afraid to be critical when necessary. That's the kind of balanced approach you don't always see.

The original Kanye video was what pushed me to subscribe to you, and I have not regretted it. What I've always loved about this video was that to me, it felt like a tribute to Kanye's work and his life done in a very respectful manner. It delivered a much greater, raw insight into his character, and going back and listening to his music after this hits in a totally different way. So glad this is not only back up, but extended!

I never stopped to think about what it would be like to lose a piece of my soul. Someone that makes up the very *essence* of your being. Without them, you cannot imagine a life. You don't want to.
If I were to lose my best friend, my soul mate since we were 14 years old, for over a decade of my life where I grew through monumental milestones, changed, went through hardships, and overcame; I know I wouldn't make it. For as dark and sad as it is, I don't want to. A life without someone who means so much to you is.....empty. For Kanye it was his mother, and god, that trumps my measly friendship comparatively by a lot I'd assume. The undying love she had for him is blatantly obvious and the love he felt in return was beyond gratitude. He owes his entire existence to her both figuratively and literally. What a mother and child share is something I can only hope to comprehend someday and be blessed enough to experience. I know he's off of the handle recently and I certainly don't agree with him; but I can't help but have my heart bleed knowing that it all spawned from something so utterly heartbreaking.
I dunno, feel how you want about him. But I just hope he gets the help he needs someday.

I wanted to put this off for a little bit because I had to take a break from Kanye in general, but here I am now.
Thank you for this extended documentary, Aubrey. Looking forward to watching it in full. This was the first video to appear in my sub box shortly after subscribing to you, so even though my interest/fondness in Kanye has died down quite a bit, to see this again is quite a treat.
This was definitely an interesting deep dive. As a person who produces music, I always appreciated the way he has been able to construct such beautiful, yet heart breaking albums every single time.
It’s crazy to see this drop within a week of “Jeen-Yuhs.” It’s an overload of Kanye being deconstructed and reviewed as a person and an artist. He’s a human. A hurting and loving, sometimes incorrect, brilliant and even harmful person.
I’m glad these two documentaries made people realize that. I hope he (and, yes, Kim and his children) get the help that they need.
