To be honest, my first time was a disaster too. Frankly my first 20 times were disasters. Watercolour takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you learn how to let the paint help you out instead of cause headaches, gets a lot easier. And way more fun! This particular tutorial is one of my harder ones. I also have a butterfly and a penguin. I recommend starting with those and working your way up to this one. The penguins probably the best one to start with!
Are you talking about the dark colour i used in the background? I would mix some cool blue or a purple with black. If you mix a warm blue you will get a greenish color. So anything like aquamarine, navy. I hope this is helpful. Paul Reubens pants tend to be really potent and the colours are so deep. If you’re looking to replicate one of the intense, almost neon Paul Reuben’s paint colours, I have yet to find a substitute that feels as powerful. More expensive paints tend to have more potent and vibrant colours though.
This is awesome Kendra! Thanks! :)
You are welcome!
Fantastic tutorial ! Thank you for all of the detailed info !
Happy to help!
Koi fish are so cute! Going to try this out tomorrow. Amazing work and thank you for the lesson!

I actually found at a secondhand store. It hadn’t been used before, at least not that I could tell. i’ve seen them at art Emporium and Blicks though.
Amazing! I did my first watercolor in an art class recently, and it was AWFUL. Trying to learn to do better! Thank u!

Love your videos. So constructive. When you did your second background wash was it in wet on dry?
Yes the last time I went over the background it was dry.
Kendra, what can you substitute for Paul Reubens Blue???

You could also mask out the fish and do the background first
Yes you could. I don’t have much luck with masking but some people love it.
