I make a really good simple whiskey. Many of these distillers (not him) go completely over board. I make about a gallon of 110 proof whiskey from a 5 gallon fermentation for about $8. Very simple. I use burnt oak wood chunks for the flavor and color in the gallon jug.
There’s a tune in my head watching this. War camp great film can you guess what it is. Fantastic info as always mate Many thanks for the help the other night
Hi Richard, if you're going to make the investment, have a look at the Pro version, I've reviewed it here: ua-cam.com/video/bkZCktKdvso/v-deo.html&lc=UgyfSzDfzmdyPE3-paR4AaABAg (replying from other account).
Wow looks like I’m going to fill my allotment up with seed potatoes, it’s a long process but worth it in the end. Great how to video well explained on the way to do it, thanks for sharing look forward to the next.
Then please check different recipes - ones that actually convert the potato starch into fermentable sugar. What was made here is essentially a sugar wash.
Hi... Im a new subbie here in Ireland. We call this Poteen (pronounced Pot_cheen ) .. made from spuds... in kitchens and sheds and the woods for hundreds of years. Usually more than 90% proof too ! lol. Can make you blind if not done correctly . :) Anyways.... I am trying my hand at making wine and cider thanks to your channel . I will let you know.... watch this space ! :)
Hi Suzie, thanks for the lovely comment and for subscribing, I had heard of poteen, but wasn't 100% sure what it was, similar to moonshine I see! I'm glad you're enjoying the films and wish you a happy brewing experience, cheers!
I really enjoyed this! 7 weeks is a long ferment though! You did well triple distilling it, but in my view, after you took the foreshots off, you actually had nearly a full litre of high percentage GOOD alcohol? You could’ve got 2 excellent bottles of vodka straight away from that. Nice touch bottling & labelling. By the way, invest in a carbon filter. A Still Spirits one. Put 1ltr through 3 times and the effect is amazing. And no hangover either! Great video. 👍🇬🇧
Interesting video. To make it worthwhile you really need to upscale it though. That was a lot of foreshots for the size of still so you probably took a chunk of the heads you wouldn’t drink anyway and that probably is why there are no cuts? The stuff left in the still is “backseat” not tails. Tails is what comes off after the hearts and smells like wet cardboard.
Thanks Gunscratch. I only do small batches as I'm just doing it for demonstration purposes and I don't drink a lot of spirits. I did take a lot of foreshots, but I was following advice from a forum. There are lots of forums with lots of advice and often it is conflicting. I'm interested in your use of 'backseat' as this isn't a word I've seen before in relation to stilling so I'll read up on this. It's all a big learning journey and I'm happy to be advised along the way. Cheers!
It isn't something that i've ever considered, but I guess it should be drinkable...let me know if you try it!? (I'm referring to what is left inside the air still drum after the alcohol has been removed).
You will find if you keep your wash SG between 1.060 and 1.065 you you will get a much cleaner ferment and a much cleaner spirit, the down side being you have to do more runs to create a full 4 litres of low wines for a good spirit run.
Never thought you could use Potatoes turning intro Vodka.. I thought Potatoes are meant for food but you guess as good as mine I already knew you can grow them even form the shop/store. XD I think making Vodka is WAY difficult than brewing Beer. Other than that, good video as usually.
********************************************************** Who the hell throws out their Tails?????????????????? I have made some of the best bourbon from a collective of left over tails and late heads. . Little secret recipe and easy =)
Hi Norm, I'm replying from my other account, but yes I did used to throw out my tails (I had no idea what to do with them), but now I use them for making bread, and I have to say that it's some of the tastiest bread that I've ever made. Your bourbon idea sounds good though. Regards.
@@G0pZ Dump into the still the late heads, Tails and hearts if you have them. I bought 3 cheap round SS screens from the dollar store that fit my 5 gallon still perfectly. I ran one SS bolt & screw through the center of all three and placed it on the bottom of pot. I add 1 gallon of water to the heads/hearts/tails. I then dump about 5-6 cans of canned corn into the still for bourbon flavor. You can grind/blender corn up if you can keep them from touching the bottom. Still away. Put on burn oak chunks/chips in a gallon container. Wait one month.

You made vodka from sugar, not potatoes. The potatoes didn’t ferment, the sugar did. Don’t believe me - try the same recipe without any sugar and see how much alcohol you get.
Great video, pleasure to watch. From jon in leicester.
Thanks Jon, your positive feedback is much appreciated.
Best air still tutorial on UA-cam, thank you.

I love how you do everything from start to finish with out all the extra junk. 👍

Wow... very thorough and interesting when just getting into homebrow. That air distiller is going on my shopping list

Thanx for this informative video.
It is made by a company called Still Spirits. It is an Air Still, there is also an Air Still Pro. Shop around online, lots of places sell them.

Great video buddy. If I was there would have cooked you a nice South Indian meal
I do like some good Keralan cuisine, Google Tharavadu in Leeds, it's my favourite restaurant in the city. Cheers!

Hi sir, After finishing distillation, can the remainder be used as a drink? After flavor it?

Where can I get this distillation machine?
It is made by Still Spirits, check their web site and also look on eBay and Amazon.
Don’t you use anti boiling chips in the bottom of the still?
I’ve never used them. Do they make a difference?
@@MossHomeandGarden I use them every time for safety reasons? They stop boiling from happening and pushing the lid off the still. 👍
I've never had any....perhaps I should get some, although fingers crossed boil over hasn't been an issue so far. @@TheGreatest1974
You could use a couple of tee spoons in the still
Another new one on me! Just stainless steel? @@johnquinn5362
1.5k of brewing sugar gives .75 kilos of pure ethanol. That’s where all your alcohol came from.
