Bro..facts I went to Bama...I stopped playing my rs soph year. I tried to comeback they told me they needed me but then let the trash ass stenght coach tell me no. The Direct of Operations and that coach both got fired a year later. I quit in the middle of spring I was just over it.

It is AMAZING how similar our stories played out, 30 years apart. I accepted a football scholarship to Duke University in 1983. I too was a 17 year old college freshman with a promising athletic future who got turned off by the D1 college football experience. I was highly recruited and had offers from all the schools in the ACC, Big 10, and several top schools from across the country. I was fortunate enough to be blessed with a rare combination of size, quickness, and speed. Plus I had good grades-I graduated with a 3.4 GPA and a 1350 SAT score. I could have chosen any number of quality schools but I chose Duke for a couple of reasons. I was a nerd who just happened to be 6'8", 255 pounds and run a 4.7 40. I wanted to challenge myself academically because I love to compete at everything. I narrowed my choices down, eliminating football factories for academic schools. I visited Duke, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Stanford, and Georgia Tech. My actual first choice was Northwestern--Denny Green was head coach and he said he'd give me a chance at OLB--but my official visit was in February. When I flew out of Greensboro it was 45 degrees. It was 10 degrees when I landed at O'Hare. Too cold for The Kid! I grew up in North Carolina and Duke fit my criteria plus it was only an hour away from home. You would think I would have been welcomed with open arms...but that wasn't the case. My position coach's first words to me when I stepped in the football office at the start of summer school were "I am going to break you boy!" No hello. No welcome. Just a threat. Our relationship devolved from there. I became his whipping boy. In 2 years of playing for this fool he never said anything poise to me. If I beat someone in a drill or scrimmage he would curse them out for loafing. He didn't like me because I didn't fit his mold of what a football player should be. I didn't live and breathe football 24-7. I didn't bench 400 out the gate (never mind that I came in squatting damn near 700!) so I was "weak". He and the head coach blocked me from walking on to the basketball team (I was 2nd team All State in high school). He hated me because football didn't define me, it was just something I did. I wound up leaving after 2 years of this and transferred to a smaller school, completely disillusioned with big time athletics. You are doing good work here. Kids need to understand What they may be getting into so they can be aware of all the potential pitfalls. Keep telling your truth Youngblood!

Tootall4yall I know I’m kind of late, but that sucks man. Was the coach so obsessed with football and winning that he didn’t care about the well being or mental health of his players? Did he realize there’s life after football and not everyone’s gonna go pro?

It's unfortunate that many young black males are told that their whole worth is based on the sport they play. It's also sad that many of them believe it. And due to their economic situation they feel like in order to be successful in life they have to make it to the league.

Coming from someone who played at a lower tier d1 and eventually hated playing the sport because it consumed every last second of my day, it was dope hearing someone who had similar experiences as myself, best thing I ever did was walking away from the sport and finding an identity that wasn’t me being a football player anymore and accepting and being okay with that

And I’m a inside linebacker. This was my first year of playing football so great things are still yet to come.

You’re exactly right bro. For example look at the late Kobe Bryant, the reason he was successful is that he set himself up for success after basketball. Like yeah he worked his ass off at basketball, but he knew it was gonna end at some point so he found his other passions in storytelling, writing and coaching. The man’s the only NBA player to have an Oscar so his work ethic from the court translated to other pursuits.

Great high school offensive lineman, Great JuCo offensive lineman, POOR D1 offensive lineman, decided to call it quits my junior year after I finally went d1, the love for football was gone wayyyyyy before my sophomore year. See I actually quit my freshman year summer but my parents convinced me to keep it going, the coaches were the main reason for real. The man is so right I was 21 when I quit playing I’m 25 and I’m just now figuring out my NEW life’s plan and believe me I was actively searching for my purpose, because I didn’t have a hobby outside of football but I always knew I was meant for more than just football....I’m not going into details but I appreciate his point of view and I respect his action to go out and get what he knew was for him! Respect brother !

Champ, do consider being a Coach. First, you have football experience, you have care & heart for others aka unselfish, and you are knowledgeable of football. While doing or being a Coach, you may want to think about being a niche sports agent for offensive linemen. Just a thought. Godspeed.
