  • We teamed up with 5 Overland Pros to ask the question "What does overlanding mean to you? Their answers were incredibly different, while at the same time being thought provoking and insightful. It really goes to show that overlanding means different things to different people, but at the same time, there are common threads of getting outside and having adventures.

    I don't know how this video doesn't' have more views. I truly enjoyed it, simple as it was. It's true, just get outside and have fun. I'm in the process of building my rig here in SC and I plan on taking my wife and young son all over, camping, hitting mild/moderate trails, and just having a good time. Keep up the good work!

    My heroes, Lewis and Clark. Living out of doors in the rig I already have that takes me over that next mountain using a 4x4 26 year old Explorer and my dream tent. Lived a year nomading overland. I think about weight. I don't have any buildouts- just my dad's old Coleman stove, a couple of sleeping bags, and 4 seasons clothes and boots.,a 40 dollar cooler lined with reflectix, any gear to maintain my old rig. I always think how far back on that dirt away from AAA pavement. So my rig is well cared for...from my heart besides regular maintainable dollars. Nothing fancy. Just prepared, back road MVU Maps and my talent of being resourceful in my current environment. Most I spend on my rig is for good all terrain mud and snows. No rock crawling, just tripping and seeing down those mountain dirt roads. Freedom..

    I like Dean's perspective and find myself closer to his thought. I seek that adventure and try to concur it. If that doesn't work, #FullSend...

    Overlanding is “vehicle based adventure travel.” Not sure where I heard this definition but it says it all very concisely!

    I like seeing our old trip video pop up now and again as it’s recycled for b roll. Fun! Cool vid.

    Today the term ‘overlanding’ appears to mean different things to different people, and that’s just fine. I think historically ‘overlanding’ was attached to long distance, long term, self sufficient vehicle based adventure travel to places considered off the beaten track, world travel. It wasn’t car/truck camping for short term trips. In my mind it involved fairly rough travel like 6 months across Africa, where even driving on tarmac required a tough 4x4. Trips like the 1955 Oxford and Cambridge Land Rover trip from London to Singapore chronicled by Tim Slessor in his book “First Overland” comes to mind. The good thing is that overlanding has morphed to cover a lot of ground (pun intended). Anybody can do it today and it is relatively easier than it was decades ago. All the comments by the guys in this video are valid. It doesn’t require any specific vehicle, just a vehicle that can get you where you want to go, even if it requires daily repairs. I don’t think it matters if you’re driving a motor cycle around Central or South America or peddling a bicycle around Asia, if you’re out there doing it, that’s what counts.

    I'm just a newbie
    Didn't know what overlanding was until I got my Tacoma
    Never had a Toyota vehicle before
    Wanted to learn about it
    First thing that popped up on UA-cam was a Tacoma on a trail in the middle of nowhere for days
    Now I can't wait to retire so I can do that

    Nice video. I'm a weekend adventurer at best. Would love to overland one day. Maybe when I grow up.

      The important part is enjoying the trips you take regardless of what label they may or may not have.

    Excellent video! All but one of the presenters I’d love to learn from. I, unfortunately, like to stay in the woods after I get there. 😉

    Well I say Overlanding is "Vehicle codependent TRAVEL". Capitalize the "TRAVEL" because the enjoyment of the travel is the focus. It is codependent because your vehicle is as dependant on you, as you're on it. For maintenance, preventive maintenance, the way it is treated or used is the way it will treat you. That is also the definition of "Touring." The difference is "Touring" is inside your home country, and "Overlanding" is once you've left the security blanket of your own country's borders.
    Overlanding is not an expedition, it's not camping, boondocking, vagabonding, off roading, RVing, tailgating, nomading, concert surfing, event tenting, adventure touring, car camping or vagrantcy. The main point is it doesn't matter what gear you have, or how far you've gone, if you haven't left your home country, you're just out on a tour.

      Travel is the key. It's not the gear or the rig, it's where you go that matters.

      Going across borders is ok to do over landing. Overlanding is travelling over land....I don't need $$$$$ to drive through mud to get where I want to go safely. I would not enjoy rock crawling, so no need to invest in that kind of gear..For both ways of experiencing backcountry, this is over landing. There was once a dirt bagger who is well respected and was the first to attempt ascents. He drew detailed maps of his climbs for subsequent mountain climbers. Sometimes he drove a caddy to get to his mountains. He didn't wear things from REI. God forbid, he climbed in blue jeans. He was still a mountain climber like the fully modern gear junky mountain climber. Traveling overland and living out of doors is well, uh, overlanding. Don't need a passport. Just need a level head and a lot of self reliance. Vagrancy has absolutely nothing to do with not should be grouped with the other so called"touring" lables that were mentioned. I first started traveling with a gear junky. He had al the fittings. Unfortunately, he wasn't using them except for the clothes he wore and the things he cooked with. I left him in the dust do to speak. But, that was his thing. I wanted to go farther down the dirt horizon. That meant rolling overland...

    Overlanding (the term “camping” is no longer stylish I guess) is what the neighborhood kids did on the weekends when I was young. Instead of having fancy Jeep’s we relied on bicycles and an army surplus tent.

    All recreational activities and sports have different levels. I consider something a definition of it best explains the general characteristics of an activity. You get elitists in all activities that suggest unless you are doing it hardcore and full time or sponsored you are not really doing it. I’ve seen it in climbing, snowboarding and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. No one holds the right to a word, it is to you whatever, it means to you. I unsubscribed from a popular UA-camrs newsletter because they sent a mail stating you only overland if you cross an international border. Activities/sports should have the aim of inclusion not exclusion. It’s how stuff progresses and you get new investment in areas.

      Yeah, I think "overlanding" is evolving into more of an umbrella or spectrum term. I doubt there will ever be one definitive answer when all is said and done.

    • @fabulousoffroaddesigns5080

      Who was that? They are right! I want to subscribe to people that actually know what they are talking about.
      Inside your home country it's called "touring" ! Only outside your security blanket, does it become "overlanding" .

      @@BlueRidgeOverlandGear see it all the time in academia. Everyone commenting has a different theory which makes the subject incoherent. But that’s the beauty of humans we all have different thoughts. The only thing I would say is looking at most of the use of the term it seems to be ‘Travel in a 4x4 for multiple nights while using unpaved roads and using only the vehicle and it’s contents for accommodation”. Doesn’t sound very sexy though. I do like the “The journey is the primary goal” though. But do most people go on a trip without a destination?. I suppose they seek out the trails rather than destinations as such. But who doesn’t love an epic campsite?

    Off asphalt exploration. Too many people try to add SO MANY words into what is really that simple. Too many thin skinned people and monstrous egos have stained what should be so simple.

    • @BlueRidgeOverlandGear
      @BlueRidgeOverlandGear  3 роки тому

      At the same time though, there is a difference between walking, hiking, backpacking, and mountaineering. Monstrous egos aside, they are different things. So is it too far off to have different terms or labels for things like off-roading, car-camping, overlanding, and rock-crawling?

    • @RxMuscleStrength
      @RxMuscleStrength 3 роки тому

      @@BlueRidgeOverlandGearYep. They are all their own categories. Off-roading to me will be different for you based on geography, topography, equipment, etc. Car camping can take place on asphalt at a KOA. How many rock crawlers have RTT's or teardrop trailers attached?
      Off asphalt - any surface that is not "man made".
      Exploration - road, culture, terrain, geography... based on time, distance, self reliance, ability, equipment.
      Is there any right answer? No. But the term Overlanding, IMO, has become bastardized by anyone who adds something to a vehicle with the intent of traveling for off asphalt exploration.
      I'm just a dude with an opinion. Nothing more.
      BTW... dig your stuff. Must resist buying more!
