    Unlike western drums. Indian percussions have Beats in certain forms called Tala. Each Tala has a count & beat timings. Each Tala has defined patterns called SOL or words ( something like music sheet). Whatever he said , he could play the same on his instrument depending upon the speed required :) The art of mouth drumming as you say is called Kunnakol in India it also follows similar words :) Indian percussion instruments from left to right - Mirudangam , kanchira | Kanjira , Gatam & Tabla .

    The instruments used are Mrudangam( covered in white cloth), ghatam(pot like) and table ( small twin ones) , uduku ( hand held one).
    The handmovements are for counting beats also known as TAALAM used for Dancinh, Instrumental and vocal Indian Music.
    The " vocal drumming" as u said are the recitation of Ragaas( sound notes) probably to set a precedance.
    At 9 23 the sounds he is making are specific to sound for dancing and are known as nattuvingam.
    ALL OF US WHO LEARN MUSIC OR DANCING HAVE TO LEARN THESE NOTES AND THEY AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND IN CONJUCTION WITH SPECIFIC OTHER NOTES CREATE SPECIFIC SOUNDS.

    The African man was amazing. There was a problem with the placement of the mikes of the Indian drummers. The African man's Mike was placed very near the drums whereas the Indian drummers mikes were mire towards their faces so the African man's drums made a clear sound whereas the Indian drums sound was less clear and sharp even though they were also talented.

    • @yasaswynandavareek8399
      @yasaswynandavareek8399 4 роки тому

      @@chandan7040 It's actually the difference in the instruments. The African instrument has more treble in it. So it naturally sounds more sharper. Mridangam has more base in it, so it sounds more heavier but not as sharp as the African instrument. The natural volume of the instrument plays role too. The ghatam that is the clay pots have naturally lower volume, so we cannot expect the same volume out of them. So the rhythm patterns, the speed and the intricate calculations they incorporate in between them, the precision in the patterns and tempo are more important than the volume. We cannot expect a same volume from an electric guitar and a flute. But both of them have their own magic flavour

    At around 8.40 is when the mridangam drummer recites a tal (Tal is the name in Hindustani music for drum notes. I believe Carnartic music goes by a different name). The drummer would then play the notes that have just been recited. As a fun fact fact for string or wind instruments a raga is recited which sets the musical tone and pitch of what the instruments will play. A Tal or Rag can be recited by those playing an instruments or in more formal settings typically by a viśārada (think of it like a composer).

    The basics of Indian percussion notation is called “konnakol” , what you mentioned as mouth drumming. We play the instrument kanjira( single side drum), ghatam( pot), mridangam( two sided instrument), referring to the video. Guru Karaikudi Mani sir just recited a korvai( set of patterns) in konnakol. Most of them are improvisation. This is set to a 8 beat cycle called adi taala

    Those "MOUTH DRUMMING" are thaat or the "bols" of a destinguished taals of indian classical music TAALS are set rule of instruction on "beats" for a song to align on that you can use various taals in various organisations to form beats for a song there are about 44 taals in indian classical music. So to play such instruments and to accompany a fellow musician you need to learn and remember them so what he was showing by speaking are the mouthed sound beats to learn and he was doing this on 4x speed.

The person sitting left to the bearded person is on an instrument called the pot drum known as Mizhavu. Both these percussion instruments are predominantly used in the south of India. The person on the left side of the bald artist is on instrument called the Tabla, which is a membranophone percussion instrument and normally used in pairs. Regards. Arun.

    Do you know, it is a huge intellectual task to learn classical music in India. It requires tremendous efforts and memory to remember all those thousands of rhythms and patterns. Indian classical music is so much refined one and so much wide since it has been developed since more than five thousands of years. Just believe me that being a well engineer and research scholar is very far easier than becoming classical Indian musician. If you go to dive deep into it, it is an ocean of wisdom and most profoundly it is spiritually connected and for those who practice it, it is a path to divine, it is their faith and their worship. Thanks!

    What the Indian percussionists were doing is mathematical patterns in drumming. The way they bunch up 3rds and 4ths to form 12 beat cycle and add it up to 16 beat cycle and build a 28 beat (basic 7 beat rhythm) or such patterns... difficult to even understand and almost takes a lifetime to master--they're called Tani Avartanams
