A friend of mine's father who owned a used car dealership for a number of years, he had a habit of buying 5-10 year old luxury sedans with high miles. His philosophy was simple, "When you pull up to a stop light, you can't tell how many miles the car has next to you". He would also do it with the idea if they were one owner cars, they were generally serviced by the selling dealer for most of their lives so they were taken care of but just driven more than others.

    Great advice!!
I am as old as dirt. But one of the early lessons I learned that put me on a great path to financial freedom was to buy well depreciated premium cars. I was working in the 80's as an IT engineer on IBM mainframes. My boss drove an expensive Lincoln and we were razzing him about being a big shot. He countered that he always buys 2 year old luxury cars coming off corp executive leases. They are radically depreciated but well maintained. He asked the employee razzing him how much he paid for his new Honda Civic. Turns out the boss paid less for his land cruiser. Bingo!! From then on I did the same. I had great rides that cost nothing. And never a car loan. No body knew I was driving a 2-3 year old car. They just knew I had the best car in the lot. Same concepts that Ed is advocating for super cars.

  • @recessjoe

I used the ed Bolian tactic to buy one of my dream cars, this car is needed 40 small things and some of them I would upgrade anyway and it had some parts that are on my dream list, I got this amazing little car for 15% of its retail value, that and the fact the guy selling it had no idea what he was selling, saved so much I'm going for a full respray. Actively not looking,

This kind of works for motorcycles too.
I put 80,000miles on a sport bike and everyone wondered if I'd be able to sell it.
It sold for the same price as one that had less than 3,000 mi on it. If you have a desirable vehicle, people will overlook the mileage. They will overlook minor paint scratches or whatever else you think is a big deal because they want that shiny new thing and that's the one they want and that's one is the cheapest they could find for sale...

It's no super car but my Sti hatch I picked up last summer as the cheapest one in the country and currently the cheapest on sale is almost double what I paid for mine and probably I could get a profit out of it despite having had the standard failure almost immediately (head gaskets). Not that I was thinking of selling it just this video got me looking, and I'm not in america so prices are probably very different compared to europe

The title says: The 10 Commandments of Buying Terrible Cars
I'm thinking: How many commandments has Hoovie broken?

It’s funny because on BAT everyone shits on everyone.
I have a great story about how I bought my E46 M3 off a failed BAT listing

Hi Ed so which one would you choose?
    Mileage vs Age
For example 2k+/- miles on a 10 year old supercar or 20k+/- Miles on a 2 year old car assuming the price for each is comprable

Older always. Age is a bigger value factor early on. Preferably both though!
