    In all honesty the man who truly took Blink from quality punk band to international superstars was not Travis; it was Jerry Finn. In my opinion even if Scott stays on drums for Enema they still blow up because Tom and Mark were marketable and Finn would work his magic either way. The band was already signed to MCA/Geffen and they were the ones responsible for pushing Blink onto every single MTV related TV program possible and virtually forcing their exposure everywhere because of their marketability. With Scott on drums, Blink would have stayed truer to their roots for a much longer time and we'd still have gotten all the magical songs that came out of this album, just with a much more skate punk feel.

      This is totally accurate; I was actually going to post something similar myself. Finn also encouraged them to use a lot more harmonies, which is something interesting about this demo--it had backup harmonies in a few places, but not that Often, once Finn steps in, you have thickly produced harmonies throughout the verse on "she's not that old / I've been told" etc etc. He gave em the buff and shine

      I mean Scott was battling with addiction.. so of course they had to get rid of him, they were having a bunch of issues with him. That's what the song Man Overboard is about. How they love Scott but they had to end it with him because he couldn't get it together

    • @misakiyoshida
      @misakiyoshida Рік тому +2

      It was way more about marketing. Scott eventually went straight and he's fine now, actually looking great for his age.
      Even though Jimmy Chamberlin abused heroin and had to be resuscitated one night, Corgan couldn't make a decent marketable song without that guy as the secret sauce and he fell off. Now he's back in the band doing big reunion tours. $$$$$

      To quote Jerry Finn, “The sound of modern records today is compression. Every time I say, ‘I’m not gonna compress that.’ The band comes in and goes, ‘Why isn’t that compressed!’”
      Compression = car speaker, CD, cheap headphone and computer speaker production for the most part. While that’s a good bet to make if you’re trying to move units for majors in the 90s/00s popular “punk” explosion, it tends to date quickly for many who took to a band’s earlier approach with greater passion. And no, I’m not saying it’s bad or makes the songs bad, but it does take most of the live and human elements of band interplay and pushes them aside in favor of mass audible consumption and listening convenience. For example, Oasis’s Definitely Maybe is one of my favorite records ever, but it’s brick walled and compressed to shit which can get grating in its artificial volume “boosting”. If you listen to them live around the same timeframe it still sounds huge, but much less confined and bound together musically. Another good example is The Offspring’s Ignition and Smash vs. what came after. Thom Wilson and Jerry Finn couldn’t have had more different approaches if they tried, but consider the best songs off of those early Offspring records against their hits from Americana. What recording sounds more like a band playing live and what one sounds more geared to be less so?
      Does any of this matter? No. But it’s fun to consider the alternative outcomes if bands like Blink and The Offspring (or hey, AFI and Green Day) hadn’t bought in on mass appeal by approach change and stuck with what was already working for them on a less-magnified/TRL involving level.

    It's not about the skill. It's not about the quality. It's not about how technically better Travis is than Scott. People have to realize that Blink was a punk band up until 1998. They toured with bands like Lagwagon, Penny-wise, 7 Seconds etc. It's not about how good Scott is at drums, it's about his style. He's a pure punk drummer. As I scroll through these comments below, it looks to me like most of these people are typical mainstream Blink fans (post Travis), which is fine! That's normal. But you have to understand where blink was in sound before they had Travis, as to after. Punk to mainstream. Huge change, right?

      @NorthCascades 7 років тому +89

      Totally agree. Scott is a punk drummer, plain and simple. Coulda been your buddy from high school (albeit, what he does takes quite a bit more skill than what Mark or Tom do, instrumentally speaking). Travis took blink from that underground punk sound / style to international super stardom. I don't think it woulda been the same with Scott, it couldn't have been. So that brings up another issue entirely. Would blink be as charming if they didn't make it to that international stage? Would any of us be talking about them? Hard to say - and whatever you answer, you probably have to give Travis some of the credit for the fact we all came to know and love them. All of that said. I agree with you. I have a soft spot for rawness. I have a soft spot for the underdog. I have a soft spot for authenticity. And I have a soft spot for Scott. :)

      I was so fucking waiting for people like you! I'm a huge fan of blink, and personally, I love every album being California my favorite, but despite my "thing" for that quality sound of "Bored to Death", I really enjoy the old school blink, and it feels so good to know that there's people out there who can give an opinion about how Scott is better than Travis without hating on everyone who likes post-enema blink. The thing with blink is that they've been through so many different styles, like really raw punk rock, some skate punk and some experimental shit in 2003, plus changes with Tom on 2015. I really love blink and it's my favorite band, and thank you, for giving such a fucking good opinion, 'cause I ironically hate haters :D (and yes, as blink 182 fan, I can say that this mutt version is reeaally awesome)

      im only 25 so when dude ranch came out i was only 6. this isnt about age, its just a fact that dude ranch is their best album, it has the fastest drumming, more punk vocals, best story telling, no autotuned vocals. i like some of enema, i also like all the small things and the fact that enema had a few songs that would have sounded good in dude ranch if you remove some of the autotune = this version of mutt, dumpweed, dysentary gary, anthem, aliens exist, what's my age again but after enema blink 182 lost the will to make music and just made easy pop music to make money off teenagers. i particularly hate the change in vocals from mark hoppus, he sounds so different in dude ranch compared to everything afterwards, he sold out the most whilst tom still had that raspy, aggressive tone in most of enema and then it vanished on the next albums as well. take off your pants doesnt compare to enema, let alone dude ranch.

    Before you criticise Scott, just know that he played an entire show while in crutches after an injury. The skate punk style of drumming requires a lot of energy and effort.
    We probably will; never know the real reason Scott was fired from the band. Travis certainly added a distinct flavour to them, but I think sometimes, his fills and intricate playing kind of overlapped the song itself at times. Some songs sounds better with just accurate and linear drumming.
    I also loved the Snare sound they had on Dude Ranch. The snare sound they gave to Travis' drums don't sound as full, it sounds kinda shallow.

    The Scott vs. Travis debate is worthless, without Scott there wouldn't have been blink at all most likely.
    They were best friends and were successfull made great music and had fun doing what they did. Scott was a key of the band like Mark and Tom, they together started from the bottom, crafted Carousel, M+M's, Wasting Time, Peggy Sue, Dammit, Josie just to name a few of their more popular songs but also blasts like 21 Days, Touchdown Boy, Does My Breath Smell?, Enthused, Wrecked Him and more give you the good vibes of californian teenage summer days back then.
    Scott fitted them from the start they went to school together and climb up the charts and popularity I couldn't imagine Travis on their original early blink records.
    But.. without Scott going away, blink probably wouldn't evolve to what they sounded like since Enema of the State, more polished for the new age instead of just fast and beating great sounds. Though, songs like Dammit and Josie must been written much later 1996/1997 as they sound more towards EOTS in a way, some Dude Ranch songs appeared on very early demos like Demo #2 and Buddha Promo Tape.
    Going from Scott to Travis was a good thing, but sad thing. Either way blink would have been great but probably different in a way.
    Some say, Travis was the better drummer.. I mean come on he was 5/6 years older than Scott and more experienced. Mark, Tom und Scott were young and grew blink together and had the same punky sound that fitted them together perfectly.
    Travis came from a various music genre with Hip Hop roots too bringing into a different pattern to blink.
    Scott and Travis have their legacy in blink-182, just like Mark and Tom.
    It's sad that Scott did go, but Travis was great addition to go further.

      If you think about it Scott was between 14yo to 19yo playing the drums in Blink. That is totally mind-blowing - you had to be talented to pull that off. It is unfair to compare Travis, who was in his mid-twenties, to a teenage kid with raw talent that never developed beyond a bloody good punk drummer. I reckon Scott could have developed further as a drummer for Blink but we will never know now.

    i finally feel confident enough to share my two cents. it might be because i love punk rock, but scott will always be my preferred from the drummers. 21 days, im sorry, and this version of mutt. i love travis barker, but scott raynor helped to implement the name blink across the world. i hope he’s doing well.
    edit october 2023 - i’ve looked at this comment a lot recently, especially with tom coming back, and i’m not sure if it’s reflection or a change in preference. i gotta now say that i prefer scott in blink’s punk days, and travis in blink’s post-punk/current days, especially with “One More Time…” coming in a week. regardless, both contributed to the most important parts of blink respectively, and have influenced me and countless other drummers/musicians overall

    Def much more raw than the final version. Although Scott's drumming is just fine, Travis put the cherry on top with his fills, and along with Jerry Finn helped round out blink into the form and direction that brought them stardom. That's not taking anything away from Scott, in fact its hard to imagine either Cheshire or Dude Ranch with Travis on the kit instead, its just that with Scott (and minus Finn) I feel that blink would have remained on the same level as an Unwritten Law, Lagwagon, Goldfinger, etc. and there also would have been nothing wrong with that if it had played out that way.

Same with Blink there early years with Scott was more rawer & less commercial not denying Travis isn't an amazing drummer like Dave Grohl because he his. Travis did change the sound a lot too because he wasn't into playing typical punk rhythms. He likes to be flashy and it totally changed the feel of their songs. Watching Travis play fast punk beats actually is funny, he looks so damn tense. Scott looked way more natural playing fast and seemed to hit way harder too. @Andrew Marez Scott went solely Single kick around dude ranch era; and Travis can play fast too, but definitely not the same nor surpasses the way Scott does it.
      And the reason Lars tends to overplay is that he has to play a lot of the same songs almost every night since Metallica is huge and tours constantly on 1.5+ hour shows, so I don’t blame him for changing it up every now and then.
      Travis on the other hand, yeah, that’s just his style; he likes to shred on the drums to be entertaining, but I think him switching up the beat up a lot is to make up for not being able to stay in a consistent beat on some of the faster songs while trying to hit them as hard as he can.
      Scott was just thunderous on the drums while Travis just likes to flex his technical playing.
