Getting ready to change out the rag joint in mind tomorrow, curious to see if I can use an air hammer to push the one part of the coupling up the shaft
Hey Steven. No I didn't have to remove the gearbox. I took the old rag joint apart to get it off easily and used a small air hammer to work the splined halves off. I also used the air hammer to work the upper half of the new rag joint up far enough on the steering shaft to get enough room to install the new lower rag joint half onto the gear box stub shaft. I then used the air hammer to work the upper half down to join the lower half. The air hammer made the job 100% easier. And luckily I had a small air hammer that would "just" fit between the firewall and upper rag joint. I imagine a small hammer would work but I'd say it'll add alot of time to the project. Good luck.
@@Volfandt thank you for the fast reply. By the way the joint looks on my 71 I’m in for an epic battle removing it. My air hammer is a larger one so I’ll get a smaller one before attempting this. Thanks again for the videos!
1st I'd press the hood back down, especially right above the right side latch until I heard it latch then try to open the hood again. Theres a cable that runs from the left side latch over to the right side and thats what unlatches the right side. You might be able to grab a hold of it with a pair of pliers or similar and give it a pull if the above doesn't work. Good luck
Good video Dave, just in the oil truck living the dream my friend, catch you in a few minutes
Nice job Dave, the ole girl will handle awesome, BTW my name is Steve. Take care Buddy. 👍
Hey Steve, good to cyber meet ya, LOL. A few more touches & I'll be done with laying down on the job. Have a good 'un.

It worked for me. My air hammer is small and just fit in both directions. Good luck.
Good video, did you need to remove gear box or anything to remove the rag joint coupler?
