I turned 58 this month, been going to meetings since I was 23. I have mixed feelings regarding the 12 steps. I stop saying I was an alcoholic and a drug addicts, because I didn't want my subconscious to absorb that. So I started saying hi my name is Brett, and I'm a member of a couple different 12-step programs.
I want to identify as some sort of divine creation, not someone who is hopeless.
I do love the entire concept of God doing for us what we can't do for ourselves, as long as we live for him, but I've met some pretty rotten people at meetings to be honest. I don't think I was strong enough, so I fell a couple times. I'm more of a loner anyway, but I will admit that I have made great friends also and really do love going to meetings, because everyone is talking about God 😊

Yes exactly to all your points! I think its natural also as one grows that the label of “addict” drops away because that old character is burnt up.Theres no need to even reference it anymore.

I had and I guess still do have a problem with introduction as an alcoholic. My ego self is, I'm not.
100% agree with you on that. And was shut down very quickly when I brought it up with the older sober members.

Same. Alcoholic/drug addict from 9-16. 36 years clean now. Back then was one of the few young people in AA. Alcoholics taught me how to live and the twelve steps gave me spirituality. Shocking, but not really, how similar the 12 steps are compared to the process of awakening. I think even for ordinary people they can be an incredibly useful way of life. Church was for normies to get to God and AA was for the rest of us. Awakening, non duality is for anyone now, but I'd say that maybe it's been easier, perhaps because of learning to surrender again and again through AA.

Thank you this reflects my personal experience. I noticed last time I tried to stop smoking weed is that I replaced it with tobacco and eating peanut butter with bread (a lot of it). The thing that most work with me is to just not bring the addictive thing into the home; which does not work for all the things on the Internet that I can use to escape from myself.
Today I woke up and composted all my weed and tobacco left; so may God help me go through the next few weeks.

Addiction is a desease of the ego.
im doing step 4 in AA, and as you know, its an amazing entry into spirituality. Self awareness.
Self pity. Anger, resentment and biggest of all fear.
Adhd sufferer and that medication is highly addictive.
    A new battle presents itself.

    100% relatable.
In my opinion, there are 3 possibilities if somebody says to you that he or she is not an addict of any sort or never in his/her life. The kind and the level of addiction are not the point.
If one says to you that he/she is not or never as an addict the possibilities are :
    1. He/she lies
    2. Ignorance, he/ she doesn't know that a certain habit actually is an addiction
    3. He/she is honest.
At poin no.3, you are very lucky because you just met a human being who almost never exists. Or you just simply meet an Avatar.

From my own investigation I can tell it's all about restlessness and boredom. I'm bored of this life, people, cars, women, holidays, spirituality etc, there's boredom of objects. If one's not bored it's because they got excited or distracted by some object. Boredom is like being restlessness- there's nothing to do, being stuck and here drugs come in, one breathes, restlessness is gone, relief.
Try to stay with restlessness? How long can you do it? It only passes when one gets distracted then restlessness comes back. Monks sit with restlessness for many years, majority leave monasteries, those who don't - die restless. There's no way out, if there is, first energy for change must be present so one way or the other there's no way out. It's either happening or not. I'm so tired and restless, death is where my hopes are... thanks for the video but it's like everything else, one watches this, later watches something else... to kill restlessness.

restlessness is desire without a distinct object,
boredom is a lack of desire in relation to an object or situation.
A deeper clarity of awareness will fix restlessness, as it's produced by the subtle suffering which accompanies the various sensations of day to day experience. Do fine grained body scanning or constant sensation noticing practices.

Which resonated with me a lot in this video, is the importance of communication with others. When I signed up to join Special Forces I was in a bad spot because of trauma and self-pity. I was not hateful but rather angry at the whole world, like a bomb ready to explode, lol. To listen to some of the random life experiences others guys had gone through during our time in service, an understanding started to sip in that my own personal experiences were nothing compared to what some of them had endured. This realization somehow calmed me down enough to see things in a more positive light again. Great and powerful video you made, thank you…

I've found personally that addictions arise from ignoring uncomfortable sensations, like even small things like the subtle itchiness of clothing. Ignorance is an attempt at escape from these discomforts, however, eventually these small discomforts build up, slightly penetrate the barrier of ignorance and then you react by trying to escape them. You scratch at an itch to make the itch less apparent in face of other sensations so you have an easier time ignoring it. Why do we ignore these sensations? Because they are accompanied by suffering. Even if we ignore the sensation we still end up suffering, but suffering is very subtle, like silence it only arises through other sensations.
pain = intense sensation + suffering
    orgasm/pleasure = intense sensation + gratification
Suffering and gratification are the two aspects of desire (cravings and aversions).
When you desire a thing you suffer without it, when a desire is fulfilled you feel gratified.
What is the nature of desire? It is the tendency towards equilibrium.
Yet absolute equilibrium within a limited domain (perspective) is impossible since the Absolute has no limits, so within a limited perspective desire has no end.
Ignorance is a limited perspective, so all desire is the product of ignorance, the greater the ignorance the more intense the desire.
To dispel all ignorance we must notice and stay with every sensation. A constant state of observation. A good practice is called strong determination sitting, where you make a vow to sit as still as possible in a single position without moving for a predetermined set of time, perhaps 4 hours. The purpose is to bring equanimity to the intense pain and discomfort you will experience during the sit. To stay with the suffering, and never leave it so that you stop habitually ignoring things just because they cause you suffering. With a heightened awareness all addiction disappears.

I’m an addict mate, proper. I’ve been through brutal wd’s maybe 30 times, my last was the worst 10 days acutes I’ve ever had, well right up there in the top 3. The non dual understanding did actually give me some space or distance which helped a lot. I’m talking proper w/d, not coffee or nicotine. I totally support your advise of 12 steps program but am principally a lone wolf so always did my wd’s in silence. I think it’s true sensitive people, possibly more a-tune to spirituality are also more likely to suffer in the basic human experience, and more likely to be pulled towards an escape from it.
Interest fact is that only 30% of people have addictive natures, and the substance is not the issue. Only 30% will get addicted to H, and nicotine, considered the most addictive substance (not sure I agree), but none the less 30% addiction rate. So, addiction , like most if not everything, is subjective, not objective, but we all, all of us no exceptions, can overcome addiction. The price may be high, but the price of sobriety must be higher. Personally I’m clean now, but I can’t deny the allure remains. There’s a dissatisfaction with this life for some, for me, there is I’ll be straight, if i’m in identified mode (I switch between universes lol), the pull is strong at times

No thing is addictive outside the realm of thought. Nature has no duality and hence has no such beliefs. If you think you're addicted to whatever...then you are. But remember it's a mental choice that makes you so. Not because you actually are. You can do the addiction dance from here till eternity but it's a fools errand. Remember...your thoughts form your reality. So be very careful how you choose them...

So, perhaps non-awake tendency to grab the mind and run with it is also an addiction? Middle-way is a bit hard perhaps to imagine sometimes because of 'middle of what' but when obsessing about an end, an effort, perhaps cut 10% will do it. I have used it in meditation, like, when feeling perhaps I do something too much, instead of trying to counter it completely, just cut 10%.

thank you ,i sure have alot off these addictions you speak about ... and it seems clear there is an underlying karmic psychological issue which causes these addictions ,but how do i know which those are exactly ? Should i be worried about these causes or just focus on getting "addicted" to the feel good feelings of the uncaused source ?
    and btw
whom are these non-dualists non-dualizing evrything away ? If you say only the non-dual self is real ,and therefore the small self isn't ,isn't that creating a dualism in itself exposing the non-dualism which allows you to 'non-dual life away' as being not non-dual at all ?

Realizing too late what I should had done decades ago: frequenting the 12 step thing. Reason already had the rational remedy for the suffering or "not fitting reality" sensation: a drug.
Psychiatrists and doctors still remain in the realm of reason and logic while addiction already involves the forgotten concept of human as spiritual being.
