I’m glad new people are discovering this great game. I used to play every week back in the early 80s with 2nd edition. I liked it way more than D&D. I loved how the magic system works. My friends and I made up several of our own colleges of magic, new monsters, etc. The Enchanted Wood was my favorite adventure campaign. A really fun adventure with tons of stuff to do.

Thieves' World is one of my favorite supplements! It reminds me of the "classic" days of gaming.

Game ever. I haven’t played in 20 years but I left DND for the system. It’s quick and deadly. I’m so glad I found your site. I’ve been trying to mass collection of reference material. I’m just trying to figure out how to play the online, not too familiar with the digital tabletop platforms.
I hope to explore some more of your content. I will definitely check out the DQ links. I have just about everything but it’s in pretty poor condition considering it’s 40+ years old.

The weirdest SPI role-playing game of that period (they were already in debt) was the one based on the TV serial drama "Dallas", which was a colossal failure. This was the sort of thing that eventually led to their demise. On the other hand, reviews show that Dallas was one of the first RPGs to stress atmosphere and roleplay over things like combat mechanics.

I have that hard cover. I paid about $90 maybe 6-7 years ago. I also was able to pick up an original GM screen.
We played DQ in the 80's off of a photocopied version that was comb bound, and continued to play into the 2000's (on and off). I haven't played in about 10 years though.
My group all bought the third ed (TSR) as well when it came out. I have no idea where that went. We never really liked it. If I remember correctly they messed with too many of the percentages.

Thanks for the overview, I've been recently looking into older games from the 70s, 80s, and 90s as current games seem to increasingly be made for "modern audiences" which it appears I am not a member of. Currently playing Classic Traveller '77 now, hoping to eventually break out original Metamorphosis Alpha in the future.
In a very small way Dragonquest reminds me of Dragon Warriors. Besides "dragon" in the title, it's both roll low and uses a self-contained stylized bestiary and encounter tables to virtualize simulating it's setting. I must confess I immediately thought this game was designed in Britain as roll-low is cemented in my mind as a British mechanic due to Dragon Warriors.

      Thanks for your comments. 😃
I enjoy games from back in the day and today. My benchmark for 'roll low' would be Chaosium's BRP based games that were contemporary with DragonQuest and still going strong in various incarnations. In the 80s we used Stormbringer for a whole range of games. DragonQuest brings something a little different. Today I'm enjoying Dragonbane from Free League that has BRP DNA runing through it from the Swedish tradition.
You can't go wrong with Traveller!

Proud owner of all 3 editions from the FB group here. I have played my most intense and fun RPG campaign ever with Dragonquest in the 80s. Right now we are having a blast with Dragonbane as well, but DQ is very, very particular for many of the reasons you have listed in this video. The game is very tactical and positioning, facing, actions and reactions are a key element to survival. Today, it is very difficult to find people willing to play this kind of Old School games, games like Dragonbane are more intuitive and quick to run combat and solve any other skill activity required, but if I might add my point of view, they lack a little bit of "character" compared to the games from the 80s. My plan is to start a group for an Alusia campaign on roll20 next year if I can find people interested. Thank you for this video, it keeps the flame alive for many games we really shouldn't forget. Well done.

I've started a high res version of the Alusia map and will share when it is done. Might be useful to you in your game?!

Tsr ruined it it’s third edition it tried to change it into DND and then they let it die as all the other SPI properties.

DQ was a big competitor to 1st ed D&D. When SPI went bankrupt TSR bought the rights to DQ then shelved it after releasing 1 module. When TSR was bought by WOTC it was killed for ever. I have the hardcover 2nd edition rules. But only the PDF's for the other rules/expansions. DQ is available for download. And yes, I have Theive's World boxed set.

D&D ruined the deities and demigod original edition as well by removing Some of the better characters from fiction. I guess TSR didn’t want to pay the copyright.
