Hi I have a question about cello playing. I've been playing for 5 years and the pieces get more complicated of course. I must say that I can never finish a piece without tension and pain in my shoulders. (Rotator cuff muscles). It frustrates me cause I don't seem to play relaxed. My teacher gives me tips but when I play I'm so focused on the positions and notes that I get tense. So halfway I need to stop to relax my muscles again... I also don't seem to play with 'color and emotion' because of that. I wonder if I shouldn't just start the piano instead... Do you have any pointers? Gr from Belgium
Hello! I'm curious which side you are experiencing pain? It is a little hard to say what might be causing you pain sinc eI have not seen you play. A couple suggestions might be to double-check how your thumbs are doing. Are they squeezing a lot? Also remember to roll your shoulders back and down before you start. Finally if some of the things are complex you would want to break it down into simpler parts so that it doesn't seem as complex. We can sometimes tense up because we are "trying so hard" to make things happen. Also the older we get the stiffer our muscles/tendons can get so stretching and warming up is important. I will say "color and emotion" can be created many different ways so I hope you keep persisting! Perhaps it is more a search for different tone qualities. I mean some people relate to more technical advice rather than ie "Id like to see more pink and sadness sound". Piano will have its own challenges. If you want to ask more questions please feel free to email me at cellomoji @ gmail . I hope this helps! I know it can be frustrating at times but it is a sign that you are also past the basic playing and YOU are looking for the sound that makes you happy too~ you are improving I'm sure even if it doesnt seem like it at the time!
I’ll add it to my list 😊😊
Awesome!
