    I’m committing these pieces to memory right now and I can tell you, they’re much more difficult pieces to play well than they sound. Zimmerman makes it sound easy. Beautiful job! I’m taking notes. I love the way he brings out the melody lines. Tempos are perfect. Nothing overdone. Simple and direct.

    what I love about Schubert is that it is always about finding the most divine beautiful rather than showcasing the pianist's virtuosity. Authenticity, character and humility vs the ego.

    I love music, I love this channel, I love Schubert and I love Zimerman. I was reading the comments and remembered one of the most beautiful praises I've read from one composer to another. It's Liszt about Schubert, and I think it sums up what we all think: "Such is the spell of of your emotional world that it very nearly blinds us to the greatness of your craftsmanship." No words.

    • @DettolObsessed
      @DettolObsessed 8 років тому +80

      There are those who would argue he does. Pathetique and Moonlight sonata are very melodic, but then again there is no right answer because this is all based on personal taste. For me personally, Chopin surpasses Beethoven AND Schubert when it comes to being endowed with the 'gift of melody' but I'm sure there are many who would disagree as well.

    • @zackwyvern2582
      @zackwyvern2582 7 років тому +35

      Beethoven dealt with elements other than melody mostly. Honestly, I'm not sure why one would cite Beethoven as an excellent example of a melodist - perhaps Brahms, with his brief motivic quips (though he might be pushing the label), or Rachmaninoff, with his sweeping harmonies, or Tchaikovsky, with his beautiful and original expressions.

    WHen I was very young, and just starting piano lessons, one of my Dad's grad students, who was an amateur pianist, came over to our house and was playing the G-flat impromptu. he'd brought sheet music with him, and I remember being mesmerized by the gentle flow of the piece and the sight of the notes on the page.
    I didn't learn it myself until I was 19. I'm 48 now and the impromptus never get old. They remain some of my favorite pieces of music, especially the G-flat, C minor, and op. 142/1 from the other set.
    Zimerman's performance is terrific. I like that he doesn't play the C minor very fast; it gives the music space.

    The way how schubert plays between the tonic and the related regions at the beginning is indeed outstanding. Further on, the play becomes more complex, but all begins with these ambiguities. The pianist is fabulous since he takes these harmonic changes into account in intensity, attack, speed, etc.

    00:00 -- No.1, C minor. A set of variations on two themes, even though you'll notice that the second theme is based on the first, with more widely-spaced intervals.
    09:06 -- No.2, E-flat major. The link between the first E-flat major and B minor themes is especially ingenious, and strangely obvious once you've spotted it: the second B minor theme is based rhythmically on the implied accents in the structure of the A section (1!231!231!2!3!1!23).
    13:55 -- No.3, G-flat major. A study in muted and utterly compelling lyricism.
    20:16 -- No.4, A-flat major. A dialogue between gently cascading arpeggios and murmuring chordal responses. The richly brooding middle section ventures into the major mode towards its conclusion, but dramatically reverts to the minor.

    • @MegaMech
      @MegaMech 6 років тому +20

      Fermata does not mean "Hold as long as you see fit" If you have a half note, you should hold for an extra quarter. So it's half the value added to the note. Concert Band/orchestral/voice are different. The meaning can even change per composer and time period. Hold as long as you see fit would definitely be a 21st or 20th century perspective.

      Strangely I always think of Schumann when I hear the third impromptu. I think, his "Scenes from Childhood" contains a similar theme.

    • @dthomases1

      The third is excessively slow, there are other versions available on UA-cam which are far more convincing.

      @MrTann2010 6 років тому +10

      why must it be played faster for it to be convincing? Zimmerman made every single element of the 3rd impromptu very clear, clearer than many other versions out there.

    Such a beautiful melody... impromptu no 3. Like Liszt with Un Sospiro, and Chopin with Op10 no 3. ALL of Schuberts impromptus are beautiful, and rank as my favourite pieces in all solo pianoforte.

    Schubert não cessa de surpreender-me por mais que eu conheça as suas obras. Espanto-me com o génio com que conseguiu encontrar a sua própria voz absolutamente original num tempo e num meio em que dominava a grandeza de Beethoven.

    Impromptu No. 3 has occupied the last 6 months of my life. I will finally get my first piano lesson in a little over a week. Everything else I acquired from my group piano class as a music major. This piece, as beautiful as it may be, is a bear. If I had $1 for every time that I screwed up 15:28... anyway, I still can't play the B section (if you analyze this piece as ABA) to save my life, which is why whenever I run this piece I only run what I can play at tempo (that being the A section). Even though this piece is incredibly frustrating at times, I cannot help but get goosebumps even after playing it hundreds of times.

      It doesn't seem it but it's relentless, your right hand just NEVER stops (except at the short fermata) and he floats around various keys so much. It's been in my rotation for a while too but I don't know that I've ever played it beginning to end satisfyingly enough to play it in front of others.
