Loooved it! The sunset at the end was so dreamy. So happy you took the decision and started a new adventure. What a great experience for your kids to be wild and free in nature.
10 points that I can relate to. We lived in central Portugal for 16 years and moved to the Alentejo just a year ago. So many immigrants chose to go where all the others go (Silver coast, Castelo Branco region and - with a bigger budget - the Algarve), but there's a whole other world, full with culture and nature, in the Alentejo. We are in "the grey hair period" so we wanted to downsize, live less remote, and didn't want to have the responsibility anymore for a big piece of land. (not a pensioner yet, but preparing for it 😉) . I think there are so much opportunities for (young) families in this part of Portugal. Maybe I should mention that for us there's another reason to move to the (eastern) Alentejo , and it's actually the sad and most important reason, namely the 16 years of going through the summertime bushfire stress. The second time the fires came to close for comfort to our house made us decide to move to this region. We call it Pickup county, because of the wide open fields with only cows and cork-oak trees. Sunscribed, now going to watch your other videos.
Thanks so much for subscribing and for this comment/sharing your experience! Yes, eastern Alentejo is so special & we also think more and more people will start coming here. We'll do a video on Alentejo, and definitely will be talking about the fires! Thanks again for being here and take care:)
Just listen you talking about Portuguese people, how they are, Give me happiness, I'm Portuguese also, and I have to admit that we are very friendly 😊, of course it's all kind of person personality 😊 I'm so glad that so many people are moving to my precious country! It's amazing 🤩 I wish to leave there, I have been in Canada for a number of years, and I can't move back to Portugal. I believe that you are leaving in Alentejo! How, I hope you are doing well and thank you for such good news about Portugal and Portuguese people. GOD bless you 🙏 and your family 💞 😊 👍
One thing I loved doing on hot summer days was mopping the stone floors 😁 just with cold water and really soak the tiles. I would volunteer for that job and do it everyday on my summer holidays. Another favorite was having gazpacho ( Alentejo style ) for lunch. I stayed in the Serpa / Vale dos Mortos area and hope to retire there someday 🇳🇱 greetings from the Netherlands
Loved hearing you guys talk about all the reasons why you chose Portugal. Such great points. I can agree that the people there are so incredibly warm and welcoming which is such a breath of fresh air. It's no surprise that they added two fantastic and welcoming humans to their country. Keep shining, babes.
Welcome to Portugal and congratulations for the video! There is a long tradition that has been lost in last years of making brandy from the medronho fruit in a completely artisanal process. This was very common specially in Algarve, but also in Alentejo where there are a lot more medronho trees. We have a long tradition on wine, lot of producers that make great wines at affordale prices. We have a great variety of food and lot of ways to cook it! That's some that i miss a lot when i travel abroad, some countries have good meat, some have tradition on pizza and pasta, some in fish, but we have it all ! :)
Great video and thanks for sharing your views on why you have chosen to move to Portugal. Among the 10 reasons, there is one in particular we as Portuguese we feel very touched with: hospitality. We are so greatful that you feel this way. I also am a bird lover so let me know some details about your next Tour so I can join you.
Thanks so much🥰🙏🏼 You can check out Jon’s website www.salvafauna.com and email him at theyellowbootshomestead@gmail.com for more info/any questions for birding tours:) Cheers fellow bird lover💛
Alentejo is a very beautiful and very peaceful area but it is also the hottest and driest area in Portugal, you will have to adapt. Welcome and be a very happy family here 🙂
Wishing you all the best from another bird lover. Poupas are one of my favourites too. Lived in Portugal 30 years and happy to call it home in the Dão. I agree that you need to brace yourself for summer.
Very nice video …thanks so much for sharing your reasoning for your move and how it’s been going . I moved to the southwest part of the Algarve 6 years ago and am so happy to have done so , for many of the same reasons as the Yellow Boot couple .
Very interesting, looking forward to the video on why you chose Alentejo. Having spent my childhood summers in a heavily forested area of central Portugal where my family is from, I admit I struggle with the lack of forests, shade, water streams and with the extreme heat here in Alentejo. That is why I keep planting trees, I hope to have a full shaded forested land in a few years. This is a tough land, with poor rocky soil - trees take longer to grow and I spend hours digging a single hole to plant a tree😂 god, this is tough😂 I'm glad you came here, and that you are reforesting. If we all did it, we could have a forested Alentejo in a few decades, can you imagine? If I may give a suggestion, plant wide canopy trees along your paths, I saw in the other video you planted oleanders, my family planted italian cypress along the road to the house 20 years ago, it looks beautiful now but no shade in summer.. you may also plant persimmons, it is one of the few trees (I know of) that, being adapted to the semi-arid climate, has red leaves in Fall, another aspect I miss from central Portugal with its many deciduous trees. May I ask how big/how many hectares does your land have? Good luck!
Haha we feel you on the hours digging a hole issue😂 Good to have a sense of humor about it, right? Yes I love how you’re reforesting and can feel the enthusiasm and love of nature in your message:) Thanks so much for your suggestions! We just planted a persimmon tree a couple weeks ago (after the three others we planted didn’t make it the first year)- so excited to plant more:) Our land is almost 7 hectares:) Take care! Thanks for your comment🤍
A New Yorker living in Portugal it's definitely a special place on earth one needs to be thinking at a different level kinda like going into the western states
7:50 Medronho is used in Portugal exclusively to make brandy. Be careful because when they are very ripe, you can get drunk. Welcome to Portugal and may the country give you the peace and prosperity that you need.
Good luck here in Portugal, we have a wonderful country, explore the north of Portugal, the mountains have many birds. You have to learn to speak Portuguese
Good luck 👍 I love to do what you've done maybe in a couple of years, I wanna a go but the wife doesn't, and we're both Portuguese and live in Canada 😢
Yeah, money is such a big factor for a move- opening doors or keeping them shut. I wish you all the best, abundance, and warmer days in the nearer than you think future🧡

From Medronho you can make a wonderful tasty very alchoolic firewater. Be Careful even eating it because you can get very "happy"... 😋
Oh the skies here! The moon & stars, clouds, sunrises and sunsets all have a special place in our hearts! That’s wrapped into our Nature reason for us!
Hello Calla and Jon, but wich part of the states are you coming from Calla and how did you meet with Jon. what where you doing as job in Switzerland? did you harvest your Olive trees this year. and how was your earning? I'm an Architect working freelance until the age of 42 years. I've got 2 strokes in Paris where I worked on a project. Since then I kitted architecture for gallerists since 2008 in Nimes. I'm searching a land for to renovate. I've almost found... near Toulouse the cheapest in France where I can plante olive trees.
Hi there:) Ooo I’d love to do a video more who we are & will soon- so I keep the suspense for now😝 We plan to start picking olives next week! We don’t have many but looking forward to see if we’ll have enough to press for oil this year! Keep you posted of course:) Wow, so cool you’re an Architect! I think it’d be such a fun job. I’m sorry to hear about the strokes though- that’s a lot to go through. All the best Calla
Hi! I offer private birding day trips and tours in Southern Portugal : Alentejo and Algarve. You can find more information on my website www.salvafauna.com. Feel free to contact me anytime by email at theyellowbootshomestead@gmail.com if you have any questions :D Thank you for your interest. Have a great day! Jon
Be welcome to Portugal! I have to give you a piece of warning though. If you chose Alentejo over the Silver Coast because of the wind, you will have a unpleasent surprise in the summer. Alentejo is green in this time of the year, but between June and September it is a crazy hot place!!
Hehe yes, thank you:) We’ve already spent a few years here so we’ve definitely experienced the wind- but we still prefer it over the silver coast damp wind. But we loved the silver coast despite that:) Take care!
Interesting that foreigners want to go where no portuguese wants to live. Why do you want to live in a place without water, extreme heat and very cold in some winters? Because it's cheap? Well, guess why it's cheap! The northwest of Portugal is the place to live. Yes, there are no big farms to buy and land is a bit more e expensive. Also true, there are many days of rain - but that's why water is not a headache
Hey there, I’m so glad you love the part of Portugal that you live! I understand your questions- we will talk about why we chose this area of PT in an upcoming video. Take care!
Hi: welcome to Portugal ! I was married in Argentina and was searching in Portugal since I became a widower in Argentina in 2017 due to SAFETY. My first choice (from Argentina, using Google earth) was Malveira da Serra, NE of Lisbon, but safety was bad. I even saw an electric fence in Cabo da Roca. Iron bars and fences are allways a sign of an unsafe place. Then, in 2021 Expats everywhere made a video on what now is my balcony in the yellow building. I have the 5 C, the video was in the 5 B. ua-cam.com/video/A8dtBZkWIj0/v-deo.html I lived nearly everywhere, I went to school in Hamburg and had a house there, Paris, UK, New York, Washington DC, Miami, and of couse in Lucerne, but Switzerland is very expensive and the winter, as in Hamburg, is a mess. Subscribed !!
Welcome to my country and...Boa Sorte! (Good Luck)
Muito obrigada:)
Loooved it! The sunset at the end was so dreamy. So happy you took the decision and started a new adventure. What a great experience for your kids to be wild and free in nature.
Thanks love:) Ooo so glad you stayed to the end for that end sunset shot! Dreamy huh!?

You make a kind of schnapps with medronho, that’s what it’s for. We don’t eat it.
Obrigada:)
