Kind of sad and funny that there are so many well made books or musical albums out there now and through the decades, but they never clicked or gained any traction in the eyes of most people. Little gems that will never be discovered by most others.
I know this may sound cold, but I deeply wish that Harlan & Susan would be around for the next quake many years from now. I sorely miss them and the little things they did for me over the years.
I'd say more strange than cold. Why the next earthquake? Why not instead for the next summer breeze? But I get the gist of what you're conveying. When I learned that Susan had also died, my heart broke. She wasn't even that old.
Absolutely amazing story. Harlan has been through so much mentally, emotionally, AND physically during his time. On top of all that happened, he still focuses on how great the rapport and commune within the Science Fiction and the overall writing world is. :) And I really need to find myself a copy of Mind Fields somewhere, I wonder if Harlan has it on his site?
I could easily spend a month in complete rapture, combing through Ellison’s library-all the while reveling in the myriad of subjects that captivated his fertile mind!
You could hear fear in his voice while talking about how he was dragged around the house. It must have been a really hard experience. But I am far more surprised at the size of his house. It looked huge!
I was in that quake when I was very little. It was what made my family move from California. Even though I don't remember much from it, it was very frightening...
Thank you for the kind words! I am currently saving some money so that I may order a couple of books directly from the HERC so I may begin my own personal Ellison collection. Still a long way from that, but a guy can dream eh?
I would never imagine buying it from Amazon! Even if I had to buy it elsewhere as a last resort, I would send Harlan the exact amount of money so he ended up making a personal profit!
I hope Mr. Ellison reads your comment. I think he likes to know he has fans who are ready to do HIM a favor! Good for you. You can find a copy of the book on eBay, naturally, but there's something thrilling about handing your money to someone who actually DID the book. Have a great weekend and stay cool - it works for you!
Well, Amazon has it. Still, buying it from a person in a real bookstore is a more ethical route. Real people paying money to OTHER real people. Ah, the world used to be a simpler place, back when water ran uphill and pterosaurs ruled the skies!
I don't know what's more amazing:
Harlan's recounting of the quake, or the glimpse into his legendary house, Ellison Wonderland, which we're allowed.

I was there for that devastating quake. Truly a horrific time and something I will never, ever forget.

I love how he's never lost for words to say, I counted one ‘uh’ during that whole commentary

Never knew Richard Christian Matheson lost his home in that one. Very sorry to hear that. All my best to the science fiction community.

I was in Fullerton for that quake. It was surreal.

And the moral of the story is ---- Don't Buy So Many Books !!
according to the USGS the actual date was 1/17 (not 1/21).
