Don't forget that Rick, Max, and Ben were civilian recruits who were not among the original consignment of Veritech pilots on Macross Island. All three were recruited into the defense force after SDF-1 folded out to Pluto.
2:39 I can’t be too sure but “Small White Dragon” may be a reference to a character in an incredibly well known novel (in Asia), Return of the Condor Heroes. It’s an old timey fantasy martial arts story like the “Small White Dragon” in Robotech. There is a character called Xiaolongnü (Little Dragon Maiden) who always wears all white. The novel is so popular that every few years it get remade into a tv show since the 70s. They’re up to the 10th version now I think.
Thank you for the info! Was a HUGE fan of martial arts movies growing up (rainy Saturday afternoons were spent pouring over 'Kung-Fu Action Theater' on TV). Going to check this out, my friend!
The moment we all look forward to every week: WARP REACTOR: Oh, excuse me. Kyle and Min-Mei's blood relation is never mentioned in "Robotech" so most fans call them kissing-cousins. 😝 It was only clarified in "SDF Macross". 56,000 is supposed to be the number of civilians with a total of 70,000 on the ship. The number of the population does go down but it's about as accurate as the military ranks thanks to script errors. I remember looking forward to Miriya hunting down Min-Mei and Kyle...
Good to know about the civilians! From the amount of destruction visited on Macross, I figured it was heavy losses, space fold casualties, etc. Thank you so much for watching, my friend!
That's one thing the original Macross did much better: Like the music or not, they at least gave Minmay a repertoire, not the same song over and over and over again. "My boyfriend is a pilot", "Zero-G love", "Shao Pai Long (Little White Dragon)" (which is supposed to debut in this episode), and a few others. After all, the voice actress was also a singer, and soundtracks were merch that would sell. Much less the case over here at the time for a "kids" show.
Just to give you context on why Rick, and his Japanese version Hkaru acts like a dum dum at times is because his a 19 years old teen. Lisa aka Misa is about 24.
I always found it funny. Everyone dreaded when Minmae started singing and didn't really like her. I was the only one who liked her, and her singing didn't bother me even decades later. I'm still jamming to her tunes 🎶 🎵
This is one of the episodes where again, "Robotech" pushes the relationship between Rick and Lisa. Yes, they stare into each others' eyes and she takes his hand so they can walk together but there was originally no dialogue about liking each other or going out to dinner and no narration about a relationship blossoming. Also, this is where "Robotech Remastered" added the most insulting sound effect: Lisa farting when Rick accidentally slapped her butt. Seriously?!?!
A fair warning, you may have already watched it on Patreon, but some episodes are farmed out to lesser animation studios and the quality suffers greatly. There is a very important one coming up and it has the worst drawing quality of the whole series. The faces are all oddly shaped and even eyes looks wrong. It will be obvious.
I've really noticed that but I try to focus on the story. Honestly I am always amazed that they haven't even tried a 'remastered' version of Robotech. Even if they simply had one quality of animation throughout would be a HUGE upgrade. Thank you for watching, my friend!
@WarpReactor I think part of the issue is, in Japan, rather than fix the first show when they want more macross they just make a new show. It's on something like five shows and a dozen movies now. Frankly though, while some are fantastic, I do wish they'd remake the original as I think the premise is special in a way that even the good sequels can't quite match. The movie, while VERY well animated, just loses too much material for me personally.
@@WarpReactor If you want to see amazing animation that will make you beg "WHY CAN'T THEY REDO THE WHOLE SERIES LIKE THIS???" search for Macross Pachinko Opening.
@@KaleRylan I get that. I think one of the problems is that a lot of people look at the show VS. the movie, when it was intended to be the show AND the movie. My metaphor is that the show is the ice cream, the movie is the hot fudge sauce, and Flashback 2012 is the cherry on top.
The kin thing gets really confusing - they call the relationship "cousin" but they're not related by blood. Had to get on Ancestry and check my tree to figure out how to say it cleary - Kyle is the nephew of the husband of Minmae's aunt (or wife or Minmae's uncle -as the case may be).
It's weird. In Macross, Hikaru introduces Kaifun as "Minmay's cousin... I mean, her uncle's son" which sounds like Kaifun was born before Minmay's uncle and aunt married. Which that would mean that Minmay's aunt is her father's sister, and that's how they're related. BUT, her aunt and uncle AND Kaifun all have the surname "Lynn," which makes it seem as though all of the above is not correct. I suppose it's not impossible... a woman named "Smith" could marry a guy named "Smith," and change her name to his, with no actual change.
I love how Minmei breaks the 4th wall at the beginning of the episode. That was a nice touch. If you ever read the book Of Human Bondage, or watched the movie, I feel that it has a lot of similarities between Rick and Minmei's relationship - a guy stuck in love with someone that isn't good for him. It's not an exact comparison, but it might explain why Rick keeps going back to her EDIT: Myria got shot in the back and her mech fell down, she got shot down, in a way. To her price, it was a defeat that she can't live with.

Back when Kyle first came to the ship, Rick, Max, and Ben all got into a fight with some civilians. That showed max can fight.

ROBOTECH Minmei has around five songs, but three of the five are underused.
I wonder how much was because of licensing.

Hikaru is 17. Misa is 19.
All caught up and subscribed just for these reactions.
Thank you for the support and for watching, my friend!
Don't like Rick? Just get isolated in a near life & death situation with him for a few hours. Easy peasy.
HaHa that's what we need to do I guess :D
Thank you for watching, my friend!
Rick can only communicate with women when the two of them are trapped somewhere.
HaHa Hilarious :D
Now all I want is to hear this line spoken by the show's narrator!
Thank you for watching, my friend!
Truth.

Just a comment on the intro music. I like this music way more than the Macross opening music.
That's a great T-Shirt you have there, Micronian. Wish they had them back in '86.
"I just found that over here, it's not mine."
I laughed out loud.

@@WarpReactor That's basically what the Macross Movie is. A retelling of the story with LAVISH animation quality.

That Magazine is censored actually he was reading some sports illustrated type thing with females on it. I think uncut version is somewhere but ya.
Stop wishing for Minmay to die, in the grand scheme of Robotech she has an important destiny.

Robotech > Macross.
🤣😂🤣😂
That's certainly an opinion.
I prefer Macross 7 myself which I could still see fitting into Robotech timeline.
