  • Only an hour’s drive from San Francisco, Oakley is situated in East Contra Costa County along the picturesque California Delta, a fishing and boating paradise. Oakley’s gently rolling hills are crisscrossed by country lanes and patch-worked with vineyards and orchards-though new schools and neighborhoods now share what was once a farming landscape.
From a quiet Delta farming town, Oakley has blossomed into a growing community of landscaped parks, abundant recreational opportunities, shopping centers, and planned business and commercial development.

Nice tour. Diamond Hills is definitely a nice addition to Oakley. I just dropped my drone tour of Oakley and had to include Diamond Hills!

To be honest, Oakley is not for me. I have lived here for 14 years, and I have been trying to leave for years. Unfortunately, I have been unable to due to my developmental disability, lack of money to afford my own house or apartment elsewhere, and lacking friends and family members to move in with combined. Firstly, I don't like the climate of Oakley. As someone who prefers cold weather and the traditional four seasons, the climate is too hot for me. I am someone who loves to do outdoor activities all day during the summer, but the weather is just to hot most of the time. Even much of the spring and fall is too hot. It's not just the hot summers that get to me, but the lack of traditional seasons. Spring comes so early and quick that it seems more like we're skipping to our hot, desolate summer. Likewise, spring seems less exciting due to how mild the winters are. Fall is actually my favorite season, but October is basically an extended summer. It also never snows. Even in the late February 2023 storm event, Oakley didn't receive any. Even other places with warm climates seem at least receive snow periodically, but Oakley is not one of them. I know snow is an inconvenience for many, but I have a different way of thinking. I would like to receive snow in my home at least every once in a while. Driving to the mountains to see snow doesn't have the same feel as seeing snow in my backyard. I also don't like the natural scenery. I am okay with flat terrain if there is an abundance of greenery and vegetation. In some cases, I am okay with dry terrain if there are hills and mountains. However, Oakley is flat and brown. It seems like everywhere else in the Bay Area's nine counties, including Antioch and Brentwood, has hills or mountains somewhere in the city. Oakley had a some hills near Highway 4, but it was flattened for housing development. Oakley looks scenic around February when it is green and consists of blossoms, but it is brown and bleak 90% of the year. It's nice that Oakley has the delta, but I much prefer hills, mountains, forests, and lush green grasslands. In terms of both architecture and natural scenery, Oakley seems to lack color and mostly consist of different shades of gray and brown. I prefer things that are more colorful. I also don't like the way Oakley has been developed. I am not generally a fan of former farming towns that have only transformed into bedroom communities within the past 30 years. I prefer places that have more history and/or theming. I would have liked Oakley better if it transformed into a college town, a resort town, a town like Napa and Paso-Robles, a town with its own theme (think about towns like Hershey, PA), or a city in-line with the Bay Area's established suburbs (Walnut Creek, Concord, Livermore, Milpitas, etc). I also don't like the overabundance of storage units, gas stations, cigarette shops that have been built; the way downtown was designed (Downtown Brentwood looks much nicer, for example); the demolition of historic buildings; the lack of public transportation and walkability (I couldn't drive due to a developmental disability); the overly modern look; the lack of even basic amenities like a movie theater, bowling alley, and Walmart (I know neighboring cities have those amenities, but a city feels incomplete without them), and the feeling of clutter when it comes to placement of buildings. The city is designed for young families, which is great for them.. However, I don't plan on having any children, of which living here makes me feel out of place. As a job hunter, jobs seem scarce here. In terms of jobs, amenities, and many other factors; there are ridiculously long commutes to find them. Overall, Oakley is not for me personally. Don't get me wrong. There are some advantages, like the central location, for example. However, I just don't like it.

@@livingintheeastbay8930You're welcome. I have heard so much about how nice Oakley is. As someone who doesn't like it that much, I thought I would share the other side of the coin.
