On mushrooms, Pet Sounds changed my life. Its as if Brian was showing us snippets of heaven. Also cut Mike some slack, he did a stellar job on the album. If you read their whole story he wasn't supportive of Brian's direction but he did somewhat gave the band longevity for all the tours they've done over the years. If it weren't for that fact the band wouldn't be as popular today with the young folks. Btw Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue?
@@Andermander429 I love Pacific Ocean Blue. I have it on CD as well as a t-shirt! I have a thorough knowledge of The Beach Boys’ story and, respectfully, I wholeheartedly disagree. Obviously, one’s opinion of Mike’s work on this album is completely subjective. But in my opinion, as I made clear in my video, in sum, his “contributions” were dull and sometimes detrimental to Brian’s work. Regarding longevity, I would agree that Mike, but notably Carl Wilson, kept the band relevant through the 70’s. However, I think Mike’s efforts since then more often reflect negatively on the band than positively. As you know, it’s been decades since any Wilson has been a part of The Beach Boys touring band and I don’t believe that “the young folks” like me, who care about The Beach Boys found them through the touring band or surf music, but rather through exposure to Pet Sounds and Brian Wilson’s other, more personal work by word of mouth. The revival is more due to the release of the Pet Sounds Box Set, then Brian Wilson’s Smile, as well as the Smile Sessions, and finally the biopic Love and Mercy (which I highly recommend), than The Beach Boys touring band that Mike Love fronts. Anyways, that’s not important, that’s just ego stuff. It’s always a pleasure to hear from another Pet Sounds appreciator!
@@maggie.b.lYou're welcome! As you know, there are a multitude of classic albums out there by various artists and bands from the 1960s to this day and I hope you review what you judge to be the best of them. Encouraging to see Beach Boys and Brian Wilson appealing to a younger audience. I discovered Beach Boys when I was 16 and Pet Sounds when I was 17 myself and the music is really timeless. I also really like Today. The b-side there has a lot of the same depth as Pet Sounds..😊
It's funny how we all love to hate Mike (me included), yet two of my favourite Beach Boys songs (All I Wanna Do and Meant For You) has Mike on lead vocals
An iconic album that's widely recognized as a masterpiece. I love the harmonies on 'Sloop John B' and the desire to go home which is the focus of the song. My favorite album is "Blood on the Tracks" by Bob Dylan. He's not known as a great singer but I think he sings his songs better than anyone else. Other top 10 albums are "For the Roses" by Joni Mitchell and "Watermark" by Art Garfunkel.
Ultimately I love Caroline No the best, it really touches the heart about growing up and the good innocent stuff we leave behind. However I hate the train and the dog at the end, too goofy.
Hi Maggie. Great choice. Nice work. I am a major Beach Boys fan over 57 years now, give or take a year. Believe it or not Pet Sounds is not my favorite. I have at least 5 others I find better. I hope you know them. Beach Boys Today. Summer days and summer nights. Smiley Smile. Wild Honey. Friends. I think Friends is my favorite at the moment but they change time to time. You can throw Sunflower in there too. I think it's just over exposure and its really a Brian Wilson album. The boys had very little input. Im sure you know and sure you've seen the film Love and Mercy. There isn't much I dont know about the boys, especially Brian, having read over 25 books. I met them when I was 8. My dad booked their opening act. I was schooled on the 66 album. Best of the Beach Boys. Very hard to find today. Glad to see people your age carrying on their legacy. Would love to know your opinion on your other favorites? And other music in general. Glad to know there is some hope for todays youth. It's not all lost to hip hop and awful pop country, pop rock. Me, its classic punk, new wave, indie and anything not mainstream. Pretty much any 60s bands. Big faves, 10cc, Todd Rundgren, Blur, Ramones, Zappa, Dead Milkmen, Steely Dan and Julian Cope is my hero.
@@MitchellSmith-w4l that’s what I love about Pet Sounds really, is that it is a Brian Wilson album! Same thing with Smile! I watch Love and Mercy multiple times a year with my mom! Funnily enough, I met Brian Wilson when I was 8 as well! I had backstage passes to one of his shows and met him, Al, and Blondie, and got a few things autographed! My mom saw The Beach Boys a few times in the 70’s when she was a kid too! They’re her favorite band and were her dad’s favorite band as well. To be honest, in terms of my overall music taste, I listen to music across pretty much every genre and starting from the 40’s up! The only thing I don’t listen to much is modern country. Recently I’ve been really into early 2000’s small goth bands, like Cell Division and Scarlet Tears, as well as stuff like She Wants Revenge and Mortician!
Surprised/Happy to see such a young person liking the Beach Boys. Long Promised Road wonderful, but God Only Knows is favorite! Carl is my favorite voice of an Angel.

@@maggie.b.lnevermind I don't know what I was trying to say from this, but my favorite track from pet sounds is I just wasn't made for these times, I don't think I ever hear people talk about it apart from these videos of people reacting to it
The original Sloop John B songs (various artists) were rather dull affairs. Compare them with Brian's version. And you don't think the Pet Sounds version is complex? Really? He turned it into a work of art!
I just listened to the whole album and I can only say that it doesn't hold up. I understand the importance of the album. back in the day it was a great feat and the hits are incredible but looking backwards on it, the rest of the album sounds like adult contemporary music.
At his best ie when Wilson's music matured beyond surf and hot-rod, Brian could put one in touch with the TRANSCENDENT. Little wonder he described 'Good Vibrations' as a "teenage symphony to God." I always liked Mike's voice and he had good moves on stage. Also, he penned the lyrics for Good Vibrations which truly made the song into poetry. Brian used his own original lyrics for Good Vibrations on the Smile album but they are rather cringeworthy! For example: And she's still working on my brain (groan) Had they been used on the original single circa 1967, the song might not have done as well as it did.
While I agree that Good Vibrations is a very good song... personally I like the alternate version better! I own Smile as well as the Smile Sessions on CD and have always liked that version more. To me it feels more genuine, and imo, lots of other popular songs at the time had "cringe" lyrics. Also, putting aside Mike's character, I find his voice to be both technically bad as well as extremely grating. I also find his "dancing" to be stiff and too try-hard. But to each their own!
i didnt know 'hang on to your ego' was a beach boys song.. i thought it was a Frank Black song (singer of the Pixies)... my bad ua-cam.com/video/VIiYJRO7HAI/v-deo.htmlsi=rn8AnsBz82ZljZnz
I love Pet Sounds-I love your reaction-good Job Maggie ! Mike Love use to say he wrote songs that he did not write. I met him-I still said he was great-I could not say -you suck. Good luck with future reaction videos.
You seem to be a very emotional "creature," [ No, not from the Black Lagoon 😂] but that's really cool. You gotta be able to express yourself and that's what music is all about. I am a retired school music teacher. When one listens to Pet Sounds you step into this dream world that you don't want to leave. Compared to real life, Pet sounds is so good it makes real life suck even bigger than it does. The musicians on this were NOT the Beach Boys but the Los Angeles area Wrecking Crew studio musicians, like Carole Kaye on Bass [only female of the group] , Hal Blaine on Drums, etc. Sloop John B was the hit single from this album, was an old folk song Al knew and doctored up into the Beach Boys style. Yes I like I Know There's an Answer is better then Hang on to Your Pants, uh, Ego....that's bass harmonica, not a sax. Young people are starving for melody and harmony and don't even know it, how sad. You get it!!!!
I totally agree! Music is all about expressing how you feel! That's why I appreciate and listen too all kinds of music, from 40's jazz to sludge, I can find beauty in all of it.
Also, I hadn't actually checked out the wikipedia page on it and seen the section regarding Tommy Morgan's solo. So just based off of listening only, I had assumed it was a saxophone!
Some of the songs on Pet Sounds suck. The hits are amazing. It's nice to see that she agrees about the suckiness. Maybe she's right about blaming Mike Love's voice. I have to agree Mike Love's voice on this album drags in down. Good job, young lady
Yes, one can. But the issue here is that it was not just about drugs. The song Hang On To Your Ego had some drug references, for example, “they trip through the day and waste all their thoughts at night.” But those lyrics, and others, were not taken out when I Know There’s An Answer was made, meaning that the complaint Mike Love made about it being a “drug song” was most likely a red herring to distract from his actual intent, which was to control Brian Wilson and his vision for Pet Sounds. Mike Love is also not generally anti-drug, is known to drink on a regular basis, and smoked weed “many times” according to himself. Yet, he often criticizes Brian Wilson and Dennis Wilson’s drug use because he’s a hypocritical bigot.
On mushrooms, Pet Sounds changed my life. Its as if Brian was showing us snippets of heaven. Also cut Mike some slack, he did a stellar job on the album.
@@frugalseverin2282 all great albums!! I’m a big Simon and Garfunkel fan, and a frequent Dylan listener as well
The Beach Boys is my favourite band as well. Wouldn't it be nice makes me think of Gold lotto ad.
Ultimately I love Caroline No the best, it really touches the heart about growing up and the good innocent stuff we leave behind. However I hate the train and the dog at the end, too goofy.
I personally like the ending, but to each their own!
I d say The Beach Boys are as popular as ever right now. And that’s a beautiful thing.❤

Not a Mike Love fan, but I do like the ending tag on Wouldn't It Be Nice.
@@susanaltman5134 I don’t personally, but to each their own
Mike love may be a jerk, but he was an important part of the BeachBoys.
@ I guess I agree in terms of surf music and following the “formula.” But in terms of their later stuff, he was irrelevant to the music imo.
Mike actualy sing main vocal in parts of I Know Theres an Answer, song shift between Brian, Mike and Al. But you dont seen to be bother about his parts.
I actually discussed that in that part of the video! But I just cut it out because I didn't think it was super necessary to point out.
Yeah. "Don't talk" is a 5/5.
I'm waiting for the day is my favorite :3
Anyone who respects The Beach Boys is very okay in my book.
i love the 1985 self titled album, you need to listen to it
One suggestion.,0 b100?suggestions., ok two: Beach Boys “ Sunflower.” 2.,Big Star “ #1 Record.” Great work. More please.
Wait who's that in the back of that banner photo
@@yahiryellow1 if you’re talking about the Pet Sounds album cover, from left to right it goes Carl Wilson, Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine!
@@maggie.b.lnevermind I don't know what I was trying to say from this, but my favorite track from pet sounds is I just wasn't made for these times, I don't think I ever hear people talk about it apart from these videos of people reacting to it
@@yahiryellow1 no I love that song so much
it would be hilarious if the next reaction be revolver
@@bougarti I love Revolver actually! I was planning on doing the entire discography of The Beatles at some point!
that's not me and let's go away are underrated
Totally agree
The original Sloop John B songs (various artists) were rather dull affairs. Compare them with Brian's version. And you don't think the Pet Sounds version is complex? Really? He turned it into a work of art!
I just listened to the whole album and I can only say that it doesn't hold up. I understand the importance of the album. back in the day it was a great feat and the hits are incredible but looking backwards on it, the rest of the album sounds like adult contemporary music.
@@richardchubb8504 fully disagree with that take, but alrighty
This reaction is so good I stopped listening and went to listening to pet sounds proper.
I love Pet Sounds-I love your reaction-good Job Maggie ! Mike Love use to say he wrote songs that he did not write. I met him-I still said he was great-I could not say -you suck. Good luck with future reaction videos.
@@BRIANZ969 Yup! I don’t like him at all, and he takes credit for a lot of Brian’s work…
You seem to be a very emotional "creature," [ No, not from the Black Lagoon 😂] but that's really cool.
@@richardchubb8504 I personally love all of the songs, I just think some could’ve been better if Mike Love hadn’t sang on them
This mini documentary -hates Mike Love too ua-cam.com/video/8mJj0EEv_s4/v-deo.html
Personally, I thought 'Caroline, No' the worst song on the album. A poor finish.
Crazy take from someone who thinks Mike's dancing is "good!" EEK!
Can one not say no to drugs
@@maggie.b.l you know Brian has Alzheimer’s because of his drug use
That is factually incorrect and also just irrelevant to the conversation.
