if there's any shortenin' breads i've missed or any mistakes in the video/description please let me know!
making this video has caused me to hallunicate this riff in every song.
@mike love if you take this video down i will steal your hats
I really don’t know what’s funnier. The fact Brian kept reworking the fucking song for 30+ years or the fact that Mike started using the melody too
the funniest shit ever lmao
Unbelievable... Hilarious
I'm crying hahaha, Mike got infected.
I don't get it.
@@youthofyesterdayrecords Be cool and just pretend you know you Beach Boys. You'll pull it off. No worries.
finally
lengthening bread
Nice to see an Aphex twin and beach boys fan
This is the perfect comment wtf
A Baguette
Two geniuses from their respected genres.
You're doing the lord's work, Elora!
I loved your Love You video! Huge Beach Boys fan so I was ecstatic when I found out you uploaded that video! Keep up the great work!
Your Love You video introduced me to this song, you better unintroduce me to it because I can't get it out of my head now, Elliot
I love how Mike just gave into it at the end.
🤣
Maaan, I've just listened to it and that's the corniest and stupidest thing I ever heard in my life!😂. I thought Summer In Paradise is the worst piece of work Mike Love ever did in his life, but this shit just beats it. Mike Love is the most unhip guy in the world.
Haha
@@toastertwo1602 are you kidding? this is the best sound ive heard
@@toastertwo1602I went to go see him live around the holidays and when that song came on, it was my first time listening and it was second hand embarrassment 😂
Brian played it for Mike so much that now it's the only song he can write.
Lol
this is correct’ mike love could only do songs that brian wrote for him ‘
🤣
@@brandonbreitkreuz1549 Yep. But it never stopped Mike from taking credit for the songs, lol! 😄
@@ahcapella if the only thing Mike Love ever did was write & sing, “I’m pickin’ up good vibrations” on Good Vibrations that’s good enough for me cuz that’s one of the best songs ever
if you are any kind of musician you will know how normal this is. You'll get hooked on something that is fun to play and you'll play it all the time appropriate or not.
Honestly, "The Entertainer" is that way for me. Unfortunately, I'm not a pianist.
@@elrondhubbard9127Fortunately*?
💯i love to sneak in a silly little reprise
@@elrondhubbard9127true, it’s so bouncy. It’s as old as the hills, but it’s still a bop.
I'm crying at the description. "Not even Joe Thomas could stop shortenin' bread" lmfao.
RIP Brian Wilson's sanity 1942-1971
What child abuse, addiction, schizophrenia, overworking, isolation, and Mike Love does to a MF
That's generous

Man, these guys are obsessed with Shortenin Bread
U ever hear the story where Brian was doing coke all night with a guy playing this on piano. The dude got tired and left Brian at the piano still playing shortnin bread. When he woke up the next day, Brian was still making shortnin bread. 😟
Roger McGuinn of The Byrds!
Brian was
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shortnin'_Bread#The_Beach_Boys_version
@@bjenny McGuinn tells the story in "Echo in the Canyon"; Brian wanted some speed, Roger gave him a couple Biphetamine 20s, and away he went (and Ding Dang was born)...
Brian’s funniest obsession
Be my baby is up there.
@@alittleguy8114 "I really like a record called be my baby"
“What kind of music do you listen to, Brian?”
“I listen to a record called “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes”
Brian’s basically an NPC at this point.
scariest if you're iggy pop
I have found that putting this video on near the end of a party will invigorate the setting and make the guests start dancing or socializing in a manner that is new and interesting. Regardless of age, occasion, or alcohol/drug intake. Please give it a try and leave a comment with your description of what happened.
Iggy Pop thought I was a retard
It's that fuzzing dirty base line...
... that jump up rhythm...
... those piano interjections...
... and as always the beach boys' genius use of their harmonious voices as an extra part of the band... funky as fuck❤
The problem is you are assuming anybody at my home for a party hasn't already been subjected to hours of interrogation about Shortenin' Bread by the Beach Boys. I think I triggered PTSD for multiple guests by playing this.
Conversely it’s also a good way to clear the house🎉
Tried it. I lost an arm and my wife is still in therapy. My guests seemed charmed though. Oh - but my goldfish took his own life. I'd call it a qualified success.
No Wrong Notes in Heaven as long as those notes are the ones to Shortenin' Bread
The adult child version has such great production!
I like it better than the la version.
Adult child has a lot of really awesomely produced tracks
There's a story gioing around that back in the early 80s a friend drove Alice Cooper to Brian's hpuse so he could meet him. During the evening Brian had Alice and friend singing 'Shortenin' Bread' over and over as Brian played it on the piano. Alice later said the Brian was quite 'scarey'!
I had heard that story with Alice and Iggy Pop. The punchline was they left because it was just too weird.
@@John-pm1hk If you can scare off Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop at the same time, your shit is seriously cray.
You forgot the part where Brian assigned parts to different house guests and forced them to do it for hours lol
This is one of my favourite videos on the internet. I listen to it almost daily.
Am I the only one that finds Rollin' Up To Heaven (1974) weirdly captivating? My favorite of the bunch, wish it was included on some official BBs album.
Oh 100% something about the melody is just really fun (especially the “WOOO”)
@@GarrettAtterberry Agree! It just seems like an ultimate party song.
Man, they're just going nuts by the end. Super infectious
I can't believe I'm just now learning that Brian contributed to the Police Academy 4 soundtrack...
Imagine Brian's Discography, but only with different versions of shortenin' bread
this is basically that lol
God only knows what I'd be without shortenin' bread
I'm picking up shortenin' bread
Wouldn't it be nice if we were shortenin' bread
Hanging down from my window, this is my shortenin' bread
Well, east coast girls are shortenin' bread
Don't worry baby, everything will turn out shortenin' bread
I'm waiting for the day when you can love shortenin' bread
These things I'll be until shortenin' bread
Shortenin' bread, that's what you need tonight
she’s not the shortenin’ bread I once knew, you still believe in shortenin’ bread, add some shortenin’ bread to your day, this whole shortenin’ bread, when a man needs a shortenin bread, let’s go away for a shortenin’ bread
You don't have to imagine.
The Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper story is hilarious in relation to this song.
DING DING DANG WOOO
I move to give Brian Wilson all the shortnin’ bread!
It's the greatest song ever written.
Yeah, beats the hell outta "God Only Knows" or "Let It Be" or "Imagine."
@@burlingtonbill1 Yes. It's the greatest song ever written.
god only knows has nothing on this baby
This video is the best thing since sliced shortenin’ bread
Thank you Elora, very cool.
Rollin' Up to Heaven actually sounds amazing
Ding dang is a good coke song. That wooooo really hits hard
That just further illustrates how bad coke really is...
Good work...
So much style from Brian and the Boys.
Thanks for this!! Certain aspects of a Catholic funeral hymn reminded me of the Shortnin' Bread riff, and I had Light Album back in high school in the early 80's. That brought me here. I never knew of Brian's fanaticism for this song until today!! 😀
I’ve got to know what hymn you’re talking about.
Same, what's the hymn?
My Solution / Shortnin Bread - what's the story with that one? I've always loved it. The energy is insane.
Can you blame him for being obsessed? It's a great song.
there's one version of shortenin' bread missing, and that's the Curt Boettcher Disco remix. That's available on youtube on another video tho
yeah i realised i forgot the disco mix like immediately after i rendered everything lol
curt erasure never sleeps we must always be vigilant 😭
@@EloraBB fr like the time when jiggy immediately removed his production credit from looking back with love and when i told him he had one he was like "uhhh no it was jim studer doe" and i had to fucking get a screencap to convince him otherwise like smh my head
this vid also misses Clangin and the Cocaine Sessions and and you could consider that one section of marcella to be the earliest in some ways
The '79 live version fucking rips. Great stuff
One of the finest 'videos' i've ever 'watched' on this website.
'wtf'
get a life
thank 'you' for your 'comment'.
I like the Wiggles version of Shortin' Bread. I am sure Brian is a big fan.
The Wiggles also covered Brian's song, "Little Children". It would've been cool if he made an appearance on one of their videos
Brians smile betrayal payback
This is a hell of a thing...thanks for this. Pretty cool for sure
Should've added the end part of the song Airplane, another clear homage
it's quite late at night and this must be the most amused i've ever been in my life
This is the best UA-cam video
who else is here from elliot robert's video?

Great channel. Always love discovering “new” Brian rare ones. Thanks for you work.
Groovy!
Thank you for this compilation.
fucking crazy that the final rendition is mike love singing about jesus
AHAHAA I LOVE that this exists, nice work
I understand why you would make this song for the next 30 years of your life. Because to my little autistic brain this song SLAPS

Amazing assemblage. Thank you!

Thank you Vinylchum!
Thank goodness for long songs by Bri

i watched the Reason for the Season lyrics video and apparently the reason is Bitmoji Mike Love
I really like rollin up to heaven 🫡
this recording peps up my day....♠
The live version kicks absolute ass
like with everything brian tried to do, mike killed it
An incredible video, Elora! ❤
How about Night Time to go with Walking The Line? 🤔
That's gotta be some good bread, or a real mama's boy.
If ya cut the shortnin bread horizontal instead of vertical
😍
Sugar shack is shockingly blatant.
I think The Grasshoppers should sing backup for The Beach Boys.
you forgot the Clangin' outtake which is an alternate version of Ding Dang dating from 1975 i think. its from a bootleg called THE BEACH BOYS - Brother Rarities (1969-1976) by captain acid
clangin' wasn't in common circulation in 2018 when i made this youtube video. those who had it were certainly not sharing it freely and it did not get leaked outside of more closed beach boys trading circles until recently!
Don't think I've ever heard this version.
i love this, but also would "morning beat" from TLOS fit into this?
Ooh I don’t even know if this counts but: is “I’m the Pied Piper” a shortnin bread?
@@prezdabeast6264it sounds like it
Mah-wah-me-om-ah glory shortenin’ bread-ya
Shortenin’ Bread
LOL, all his hats?
Like the tempo and feel on the Fantasy is Reality version.
I love Brian!😂❤
Further required shortenin' bread listening.... Clambake by Elvis (awful), Aviatrix by The 3 Clubmen (genius).
Sounds like Brian fell asleep on his car horn
did they rehearse anything else for the It's Ok special - is there a video of that?
Pretty sure Shortnin Bread is the only song they rehearsed from 1973-1987
@@kevinr.3542ah yes of course, the bread boys replaced the beach boys during that time
At the end Mike got infected too, lol
@elora you missed metal beach, thats an incredible version of shortenin bread!
17:58
7:37 where did you find this? Is there more audio of this?
I love how Brian's hotel tapes show the difference between Shortnin and Ding Dang, even though they're similar at their core.
George Semper version is best one!
When & where was the version @ 0:00 recorded ? it sounds like a demo
Not sure, but since adult/child never came out a lot of the songs on that are bootleg quality
You actually listen to all 28:14 of this recorded insanity and you'll be as "crazy" as Brian is....
