    Came across this channel while looking for a USB C travel charger for my laptop. I've run through quite a few of these videos now and I like how informative they are. Good job! I ended up buying the Baseus 100W charger, but wanted to see how this Anker one would compare. Glad I got the Baseus one 😉 it's not as fast as the 240w charger, but it charges it up pretty fast. Thanks for the good info! 😀

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 роки тому +3

      Yeah, in reality, most devices aren't taking full advantage of 100w adapters even. So, they're a bit oversized. The 65W adapters, at least what I've seen so far are all pretty bad. A 240w charger is cool but probably won't do anything to charge most laptops any faster. The big thing is one adapters many ports though. The Baseus at least does a good job of supplying even lower power levels though.

    Very happy to have stumbled on your channel. I've been looking to buy a 100W charger for a while and was thinking about waiting for this one. I almost went with the Minix P3 but after watching your video about it I'm staying away from it.
    I guess I might just go for the BaseUs 100W instead.
    There is also another charger I'm interested in, maybe you can review it: InfinityLab InstantCharger 100W 4 USB made by Harman (a Samsung company)
    Would be interesting to see how it behaves compared to the ones you already reviewed.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 роки тому +2

      That InfinityLab charger looks like a clone of the Baseus. The specifications are very close to that charger, which is a good thing. I will have to check that one out and the rest of the series. I always forget Harmon is part of Samsung. I have a Crown (also Harmon) power amplifier repair video to do at some point.

    Your right, this was the most requested charger. I couldn't believe my eyes when I clicked on the video, I was like, its it, its the charger woohoo! But my ultimate enthusiasm in excitement, quickly became a crescendo of disappointment. Anker was 3-months late on getting this out to the market this year, and with all that delay, they still couldn't manage to make a quality charger that ranks at the top of the list. I have always had a deep love for Anker, but this just feels like a betrayal to my heart. Yet another charger to put in the pile of broken dreams. Looks like I need to buy a Basseus then. I am so glad we have you though buddy, many thanks!

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 роки тому +3

      You captured my response perfectly. My conjecture on why late and why light on features is lack of semiconductor availability? I was thinking of doing a short on how to make it improve quality (basically force one port to stay at 20V but then you lose a port and the idle power goes up a lot not really worth it).

      For 100 watts my go to is still the Baseus desktop or wall multi-port adapter. I mostly use the desktop adapter though. Pretty much everything else I've tested from Baseus has been not great performance wise. In terms of longevity they all have issues if you run them near top power level regularly. So, my actual daily use charger is a 165W Satechi adapter that doesn't have more than 100 watts of load on it, so it stays cool and charges everything I use. It isn't for everything though. Some people have had charge loop issues, I haven't been able to replicate them.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  Рік тому +5

      Yeah, Baseus is a weird company, they like many of the newer companies, they don't make anything. So they have many different contract manufacturers they use, the quality control on some models is not good. My 100W multi-port adapters have been great but my small sample size versus the larger whole and the quality issues I tend to agree with you. There's not many brands that survive more than a few years that make a quality product though. Anker today has a reputation as a high quality manufacturer.

      Thanks, yeah, I'm always refining things and changing out how to compare everything. I have a video on power quality but it is a long video and probably a bit too detailed. I like to give everyone all the technical details which is the thing that makes the channel standout a little. I did add some short descriptions in this video and I want to further things to help clarify and make the data more useful to non electrical engineers and I will keep working on that. The rating system is a big deal. The power quality score, PQS, essentially sets everyone apart. The higher the number the better the device is so more efficiency and more effective the use of the AC power. I have some ideas on how to better present this.
      In terms of the Samsung 65W versus the Anker 736. Just look at the numbers: The Samsung is a PQS 86, the Anker is a PQS 139 choice made, pick the higher number! Yes, a web-database of all of this is in progress so anyone can search and find this data on all of these power adapters and well actually anything that plugs into the wall.

    I need a travel adapter and would prefer something lighter. I was thinking of going with the Baseus 100w, since it is your top pick, but I've heard it doesn't stay in the wall really well. The Anker 735 looked goo and light, but it may suffer from the same issues as this one. Do you recommend any 65w adapters, or should I just go 100w? I don't really need 100w with a Macbook Air and a mavic mini and iphone 13 that I travel with, plus my Apple Watch. In your Minix video, you said all the 65w perform poorly. Is this the case?

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, it is a valid point for these 100w adapters with wall staying power, they are heavy and the cables stick out even further. The 65w adapters are okay (either invzi or minix). I think it’ll work just fine it just isn’t the most power efficient, especially with AC power. If you are traveling, I guess you aren’t paying for the power but rather where ever you stay (there are some trickle down effects). But in terms of 65w adapters I have yet to see anything that meets the higher level of performance criteria. The minix coming with the travel adapters is nice. Mostly I present all the data. You ultimately get to decide! If you have good luck with a particular adapter comment as such though.

      One possibility is the usb cable shorting out (I know I have a frayed cable or two around that need to go). Another is a charge controller error or a device that isn't programmed properly and draws more power than is available. The charger having the built in protection will cause resets but it won't cause a more dangerous situation. If the communication is broken on the USB C path anywhere the device will shut down also. This communication should keep the device from asking for too much power though.

      Safe to use is relative, the phone decides how much power to use. Modern phones are very good at negotiating for and only using as much power as they need. There are two CD226 adapters. One is a P/N 70869, that one is fine. The other one is an avoid. • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 роки тому +5

      There's the kind of initial bit going over the charger itself, how it behaves, overload protection level, those are useful for direct and obvious reasons. The power quality score and said numbers are a bit more of a hidden code, the numbers the manufacturer would never let you see. The easiest one is efficiency. The higher the efficiency the cooler the device runs, the more power is transferred into your device rather than becoming heat which means less cost to the user for the same output. In AC things get more complicated since there are phases and waves so efficiency isn't just efficiency. Not knowing your technical level, this means the wave shape and phase of current and voltage matter. So REAL efficiency may be high but that doesn't mean the device isn't causing issues elsewhere and real components have real losses that essentially equal more cost to the end user. A low power factor 100W power adapter actually costs a couple dollars more to run per year (US electrical rates) versus a power factor corrected one. It isn't a large number since electricity is really cheap but as everything is getting more expensive being effective in use of power becomes more and more important. Also, a large number of non-power-factor (PF) corrected devices on the grid increases the amount of generating capacity required. Millions of people using a non-PF device versus a PF corrected device means more current which means more loss before and after your electrical meter. This is tiny scale of course. It isn't a 10 megawatt AC motor so correction is on a different level but still important. This is too long. I need to make a video for all of this stuff, haha.

      @@AllThingsOnePlace really appreciate the videos exposing things manufacturers don't want us to see, but also have to put into account the ports / size and form factor use case. No use in being very efficient if there's only 1 port when you need multiple, even if it's at lower charging speeds. Or if you need a small form factor for travel, or something that just doesn't fall out of the socket due to it's length.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  Рік тому +1

      As of now, I am still on the Baseus 100W Desktop or Wall multi-port charger as the best option. The main issue I see from people with these is questions on whether they last or the quality control. They don't have the best power sharing and they also have some issues with negotiating USB in some cases but once they finish the USB dance, they've worked great for me. No charger is perfect. If you really want an Anker device, over this 100W charger I'd pick the Anker 120 or 150W charger. They have a bit better power sharing.

      You can but you need an adapter to get the power adapter to put out the 12V, www.amazon.com/Blind-SPOT-Adapter-Device-Battery/dp/B08CCX5S96 , this isn't the recommended power adapter for this application as it doesn't turn on PFC though. If you want compactness I'd probably go with a smaller Anker power adapter, like the nano II 30W, if you want most efficient conversion the 120W anker 737 or the Baseus 100W wall adapter are great options. This is the no soldering option, there are much cheaper ways to make this happen if you want to solder a bit.

    Nice to see a review with actual information.
    However, when I'm buying something like this, my biggest concern by far is not efficiency, it is safety. If I buy this and leave it plugged in for a decade, am I guaranteed that there will never be a problem that leads to a fire? Do the safety ratings mean that we are sure it's as safe as an Apple charger?
    I'm frustrated by the fact that the electronics accessory market is made up almost entirely of Chinese companies, many of them obscure no-name brands. I would fell more comfortable buying from an American company that has a reputation to uphold and deep pockets to sue if anything goes wrong. Or at least a Japanese or European company. With China's historical reputation for shoddy products, I don't like being forced to bet all of my Earthly belongings on their products' safety. But in a lot of cases, like with USB-C hubs and such, I don't seem to have much of a choice.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, I certainly understand that, Anker has a good track record and is a big company now. Are they perfect, no, but they do take safety pretty seriously on these devices and from any teardowns I've done put effort into making these properly. Data security, not so much. Why does the power bank app need access to my contacts and photos...
      The safety testing of course is risk mitigation, some percentage of everything breaks and some percentage of everything will break in an unsafe way, everything can't be in a fireproof box that poses a fire risk. I get the, does the safety listing matter, question quite a bit and basically I've found that, yes, it matters, if it isn't on the product some corner was cut to make it cheaper. It may make it a little less efficient to make it safer too and it's a worthwhile tradeoff. If it's just inefficient compared with the just as safe competition off the bat though that's when I complain. Of course all of these are like the finishing line of the 100 yard dash. blink and everyone finished, but only one gets the gold, they're all very close.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, that 65W Samsung one is a skip. The 45W Samsung adapters however aren't bad and they will max. out the charge rate of the phone. In reality they don't charge at that rate for long and spend most of the time at a much lower wattage rating so even smaller chargers don't mean a much longer time to full charge. This Anker would also be a bad choice since it won't ever turn on its high performance mode to charge a phone or even most tablets.
