Been fighting a rich condition for two weeks on a 2008 Tahoe. Got lucky today and came across your video. Thanks so much for your information. My alcohol content was at 45%.
What did you use to reset it?
@@garthhollis4258 I have a Tech II scan tool, easy to reset, just a click of a button.
@@robinoglesby3656 Been having an issue with my 2011 Silverado, that's running at 46.9%..do you remember where you purchased your Tech 2? Been looking for one, and since our vehicles are somewhat close in models/engines/years, the one you have would probably get me going again.
Thanks for the video I used it to reset my fuel composition on my 2009 HHR - it was at 58% - I purchased my own Tech 2 and your step by step instruction were a great help!!!!!
James Swetlik awesome! Glad i was able to help
Very Helpful. Had dealer reset and truck runs like new car. Almost peeled out coming out of dealer. So much more throttle response. I was at 78%
kool..how much does the dealer charge for the reset?
Great video. p0172 on 08 Flex Impala. Had a 50% composition and it was running like crap. Used my Autel Maxisys and just reset it. Short term and long term running within acceptable parameters now. Thanks !!!
Paul Phillips awesome!!
I followed your requests to subscribe, like. Keep the great videos coming. Thanks.
Couldn't solve a cold start issue where it stalls going into gear but is fine when warm and you helped me find the fuel trim was at 79% alcohol content. No wonder it wouldn't run right
Glad i was able to help..don't forget to subscribe and hit that bell
Buddy that was a great tip. Up in Canada I have never seen fuel with higher that 10% in my area but I see vehicles capable to run on E85. This tip would apply up here as well since you car was built here. Awesome 😎
hey thanks man..yeah i figure i would post this cause its a real easy fix, in case anybody else had the same issue..
Is there a scan tool under 300 that will do this?
Thank you. This video is really helpful for me.
Nick Song thanks for watching
Great video sir. I'm having the same issues.... heading to the dealer soon to reset the alcohol % content....mine is at 31%. my question is, do you have to reset the fuel trims also? Or will they reset on their own?
linebum2112 they reset on their own..thanks for watching and commenting
@IAMTOPWRENCH1
So you won't need a scan tool if you use your method?
@@klowny1969can any snan tool do this? Thank you
My alcohol % is at 18%. I use 87 octane that says it may contain 10% alcohol. That is a 8% increase, but is that enough to set it off and give me P0172 code? I don't think my autel reader can reset it, so I just wanted to know if 8% over os enough to trigger the code before I look around and fork out the dough to either get a reader that can do it or find someone who can do it.
If anyone has this issue with a chevy i strongly suggest taking your car to a chevy certified technician, tell them not of the code but that it is running rich and you want to know why. Deal directly with a service manage at entry. Do not start spending cash guessing. It's a mistake. Take it from me. For me, my high pressure fuel pump was leaking internally causing gas to mix with my oil, and that was 1 of 4 issues. Good luck.
Is there any way to do this without a scan tool? I have a good scanner but it doesnt have this function and i need this vehicle off the lot asap
Shit Luck Automotive not that I know of
Map sensor is reading 43 kPa which is just out of your 19-42 range. Does this need a new map sensor or is something else causing it to read that high
Hi klowny1969, thanks for the video. I performed an alcohol composition reset as you described 6 months ago on a 2007 Flex Fuel Impala. I use Costco regular gasoline and drive 6 miles each direction to work and home. I always fill up the car at 1/4 tank. A few weeks ago, I checked the live data and the alcohol composition was at 4.9%. Yesterday, I check again and the alcohol composition was at 16.9%. Same tank of gas, same weather, same driving conditions. Any thoughts about why it might spike?
Could be a defective sensor
I could really use your help in pointing me in the right direction. My engine is running rich 0172 and 0175 codes. My LTFT at idle is -40 and -35 at 2,500rpm. I have a 2011 chevy equinox, LT 3.0, 2wd. Also, here is a freeze frame if it will help point me in the right direction. Do i have a vacum leak maybe?? I've spend a lot of money replacing parts and being advised. any help would be amazing!!

i've been troubleshooting these codes on my care for like 6 months. can't seem to find the cause of the 172 and 175 readings. I have a 2011 equinox 3.0. spent good cash on parts, listening to this person or that person. This is the first i've heard of this solution. Car runs fine, however the idle pulsates as of late. I also recall adding an injector clean to the gas tank which caused the light to go off for about 5 hours before returning. Any advice or assistance would be amazing. Thank you for taking the time. I Appreciate it.
2011 Equinoc 3.0 does not calculate fuel alcohol content the same as this. Your vehicle has a Fuel Composition Sensor located in the feed line under the car. They are common to fail.
thanks man... great videos
thank u
So Klowny. I dont have a scan tool. I have 2008 flex fuel Impala. Code P0172. So you're say run down to near empty, then find a gas station with low ethanol. Will the car correct itself does the light need to be physically cleared
That might work..but it might not
Ok reset this on my 2011 tahoe and still hard tarting replaced plugs wires coils fuel pump cleaned throttle body mass air flow sensor and changed air filter ... Any other thoughts?
I have an 11 Silverado, with the same issue. I've done all you've done, minus the fuel pump, since the numbers looked good on it. I also replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor,, ambient air temp sensor(was reading -40), thermostat, and upstream O2 sensors. It was going alright, minus the shit fuel economy, until the other day when the temperature dropped below freezing. Then the hard start happened. I need to find a Tech2 somewhere to do the composition reset. Do you have one, and if so, what kind did you get and where did you get it from?
I didnt have this issue untill i accidently put 91 octane in my 2007 Flex Fuel Impala. Now its been saying fuel is rich
Hii klowny1969 on my Mercedes W211 E200 kompressor 1.8 with LPG system , when I change the termostat and driving 300km I have this code P0172 , this is only when I am on the LPG GAs , I readed a lot for this dtc like MAF sensor , vacuum hoses, spark plugs ,oxygens sensor , for now I will go to check the LPG System , but what do you think?
hi sir i have chevrlet impala 2015 problem thats is remove fuel tank cap car is shutoff i don,t no what is this problem
I know this video is 5 years old, but my 2011 Silverado is running at 46.9% composition. Could someone shoot me in the right direction to purchase a Tech2 that would let me do a reset??
Buy a Chinese knockoff
What scanner do you use?
This was a Tech2
@@klowny1969 any link where i can get this scanner?
I have a 09 impala and my Fuel Composition was at 78%, had a buddy at work reset it with his snap on and it fixed it for about 31 day's but now my car is throwing a code again (p0122) I only use 89 octane gas,.... but when we reset it, we didn't let it warm up, and i doubt it was in close loop, but outside of that any other ideas on what could be causing this issue??
Bret Rice p0122 is unrelated to fuel composition
sorry I meant p0172*
Bret Rice if ur fuel composition is high again..try not to go close to empty on ur gas tank..it could be recalculating it wrong..certain parameters have to be met for the computer to recalculate the composition
I never run down that low, I feel up before it on the red 1st line
Bret Rice if i remember correctly it might be close to 1/4 tank that it kicks off the recalc
I was on e and stopped at a Arco once I filled up the tank and went to pull off it start struggling I have 1997 camaro z28 what gas stations have the best because I will never go there again smh
just watched your video. I never had issues with my car today (2008 chevy impala) but today I ran out of gas. had a friend bring me a gas and once turned the car on the engine light came on. I got my car diagnosed and it was p0172. Any advice?
Israel Alamia i talked about the different issues it might be in the video..if its a flex fuel engine, it could be the percentage of ethanol..thanks for watching
+klowny1969 yes it's a flex fuel. So so are you saying don't use flex fuel anymore?
Israel Alamia the percentage of alcohol the computer thinks u are using can be more than what ur gas actually is..should reset that parameter in the computer
+klowny1969 would filling up the gas tank possibly reset it?
Could anyone find a brand of scanner that would reset it, if so could you send a lick to it?
My 2013 yukon xl 5.3 has 175-172 codes but it will not start so is there anything in particular that could calls it not to catch fire and start up ? Ineed up
Did you find the problem? I am having this issue right now and I would GREATLY appreciate your help!
where can I get one of those.
search online for tech2
Hi can this work also for a 2010 Lincoln navigator with flex fuel.
Stanley Medina should be the same..but u need a ford computer
klowny1969 is there a site on UA-cam that can help me fix those codes
Stanley Medina are you having a rich condition code? If so, it could be alot of other things as well..if u need a flex fuel reset..then u have to have a ford computer to reset it..only the dealer has that
klowny1969 thank you I'll do that
Np
the problem will come back. PCM needs to be reflashed with updated firmware
Haven't had a comeback in years
@@klowny1969 apparently it's triggered by small fuel-ups
So u didn't fix it you just cleared the fault eventually it'll come come back???
TheTruelakersfan it just needed a reset..never came back
