I wept like a baby the first time I heard the Lodger album, and I'm weeping again. William Butler Yeats always denied that his poems were political, although they were very much so. This song is incredibly political, but more than that. History is repeating itself in the most terrifying way. This album was the last of his Berlin Trilogy. He collaborated with Brian Eno and Tony Visconti and was influenced heavily by world affairs and history. It has always touched me deeply; nevermore so than now.. Take a deep dive into the entire LP. I promise you it will be a Fantastic Voyage.

It was the time of the Iranian revolution when the Shah was overthrown and expelled and the Ayatollah Khomeini installed as the leader of a new totalitarian theocratic regime. Bowie said those events were far more important to Europeans than who was putting out a new record. But Lodger is Bowie becoming less self involved and self indulgent and wrapped up in his own head. He’s looking out at the world. He’d also become the primary caretaker for his son, to whom he thought he hadn’t really been the best dad he could’ve been. Lodger is an often overlooked Jem. It’s still experimental but in a less overt and dramatic way than the previous two albums. But he returned to high drama and America with his next album Scary Monsters, which was his first without the involvement of Brian Eno since recording Low in 1976. I recommend the opening track It’s No Game, Pt 1. High drama indeed. Cheers.

Wow Pope, you've really been digging into the David Bowie catalog. It's full of treasures. For example, for something different, compare and contrast the two studio recordings of "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)". The first recording was composed by producer Giorgio Moroder and released as a single in 1982. It was the title track of the 1982 erotic horror film Cat People, starring Nastassja Kinski. It did very well in the international charts and broke into the top twenty in several US charts. Bowie's vocals on the track are ferocious. FM rock radio stations played the song for months. The song appeared in several other films as well, including Firestorm (1998), Atomic Blonde (2017), and Inglourious Basterds (2009). The second recording was produced by Nile Rodgers for Bowie's 1983 album Let's Dance and features Stevie Ray Vaughan on lead guitar and Omar Hakim on drums. Awesome! The sound on it reminds me of live Bowie from the aughts, when Gail Ann Dorsey played bass and the band rocked. At any rate, another direction might be towards songs Bowie produced for other artists, like Lou Reed or The Stooges. For example, check out "Satellite of Love", "Vicious", and "Walk on the Wild Side" from Lou Reed's 1972 album Transformer, produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson. Good stuff!
This song is a bit of a slow burn but it only gets better the more times you hear it. It's low key one of Bowie's best songs. A big Bowie song I don't think you've hit yet is Changes. For somewhat deeper cuts, how about Bring Me the Disco King, Something in the Air or Strangers When We Meet? Oh, and an absolutely stunning late song most people don't know is No Plan. It was on an EP released posthumously. Check out the music video.
