Honestly, if would be as bad if it was like Tsubasa & Ageha's case were they are drawn similarly taller, but is EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE that despite Ari's age is 12 she's drawn almost like a baby & Chess having 17 is drawn like he is on his 30, specially for their inmense size difference
Honestly blond girl's character ark seems like a really neat idea - someone who doesn't realize just how much harm she's causing to others in the long run (cus she's just a kid) learning to be better and becoming a part of the squad by the end. It's pretty standard but it could work and teach kids that being mean deeply hurts others. Of course the show didn't do it well but still. XD
I never ship Ahri with Chess because Chess is almost adult. It make me uncomfortable seeing that. I just prefer if Chess is an teacher/mentor with Ahri. Kind of abit weird that Trump is 13 year old despite he look like a adult.

I don’t think Flowering Heart's magic system is based on Sailor Moon's disguise pen. It reminds me more of what a lot of 80s/early 90s magical girl anime did, especially Minky Momo. In fact I'm pretty sure their plot was heavily inspired by Minky Momo and Magical Angel Sweet Mint considering they also have plot lines that revolve around the protagonist being tasked with collecting the dreams/hopes of humans for one reason or another. Also, I wouldn’t hold the lack of fight scenes against the show since its clearly not meant to be action oriented like most modern magical girls tend to be. And to be perfectly honest, if this show can't make the girls being able to transform into adults with any job imaginable fun, fight scenes wouldn't be able to salvage it at all. There are magical girl anime that aren't action oriented, even if they're not as common as they used to be. And fight scenes aren't the only way to make magical girl anime worth watching or have stakes. Also this is a personal thing, but I hate it when people are so quick to call other magical girls, especially ones they don't like, Sailor Moon knock offs. It feels like people's knowledge of retro magical anime ends at Sailor Moon and a lot of the time, the reasons are just staples of the magical girl genre to begin with and don't necessarily make it a ripoff. I think Noralites said it best and they said that when works fit into certain genres, they are bound to have similarities with other works that also fit said genre. Anyways, that's all I have to say. I don’t like Flowering Heart and this review is solid. But some of your points do feel nitpicky and other points could've benefited from having more knowledge about magical girl anime.

nope. just no. if you're a kid the most age gap is 1 year, and even then it can be dubious depending on how young of a kid. like as a what... 4yo? I had a crush on this 5/6yo ? specifically because he was older and cooler and unachievable!
no older one in a situation where a teenager has a crush on them with such a big gap would in their right mind ok that. I also had crushes on people who were late teens or early 20s throughout my early teens, and I knew it would not be ok for those crushes to reciprocate.
Why is it still SUCH AN ISSUE with animated shows that the characters are drawn so weirdly unlike their actual ages?? The age gap is one thing, but yeah her looking 5 years old with the love interests looking more like they're 17 and 30 just makes it worse.

💙 (Sky Dancers is my pick.) I actually have two magical girl recommendations. One is called Princess Guinevere and the Jewel Riders and the other is Jem and the Holograms I watched both on UA-cam and they were really fun. Jem even had characters and plots that were ahead of there time, especially for an 80s cartoon.
I’ll add them to the list! I actually love Jem and the holograms! My mom and I watched it during the pandemic lol
I had the misfortune of remembering this show existed and now I'm watching through the first season to make a video on it, it was honestly worrying reading the comments on their videos and I'm really glad someone else is discussing this

Ive never seen this but feel like this could have been a good magical girl show if they aged them up to all being like 15-17. It’d probably have kept the younger audience but also gained more of an older audience as well.
Finally! Someone said it!! Honestly I always thought the dynamic between Chess and Ari was weird as heck. Honestly, even Trump and Ari’s dynamic doesn’t make sense, Trump looks at least around 16-17 himself, I though he was in college at one point. Ari’s crush on Trump makes sense in retrospect, he’s handsome and looks like an idol, but why does he look so much older than her when she’s only a year younger, because just looking at these characters it looks very much like a kid crushing on a pop star, and like I said there’s nothing wrong with that, as long as a relationship isn’t encouraged. I know Trump is only one year older than her, but considering the way it looks it opens up some unsettling implications between the two, when I first saw Ari I thought she was in first grade or something, it’s just gross. Don’t even get me started with the Chess and Ari relationship, in my mind, they have a brother sister type relationship and it never goes further than that. Furthermore, I’ve always questioned how they thought Trump and Ari would’ve worked, Ari is actively working against the Flowering Heart Kingdom, and he’s working for it, he’s evil, she’s good, ultimately this dynamic wouldn’t have worked out anyways. Especially throughout Season 2, and I honestly cannot fathom Trump having any interest in Ari. They have virtually nothing in common and their interest in each other is fairly shallow. That’s why it’s honestly hilarious that the show tries so hard to pair these two together when they were doomed form the start, you’re not going to get with every person that you’re interested in, and honestly I think that would’ve been a better message to send to kids, than a completely unrealistic and slightly inappropriate relationship that would realistically never last. Even in Season 2, they continue to push this inappropriate relationship dynamic between Suha and Chess, luckily Chess has no interest in her, but like you said you really have to question the show writers, because this is just disturbing and horrifying on so many levels.

But at the end of the manga it got cliched At least the anime ended on a platonic note. But don't get me started on Skip Beat I have a complicated relationship and very layered feelings when it comes to Skip Beat. But I keep reading it because I want to know how it ends. If you're interested in my complaints I would happily tell you.

Bro I just can’t imagine shipping Ari with anyone but Gichan. Obviously no one is really a good choice for her though. She’s like 1/3 of Trump’s size and you know their relationship’s going to be bad when he’s Donald Trump. And then there’s Chess. Chess is literally like 5 years older than her, and I guess that’s not that bad, but he’s almost an adult and Ari’s a 12 year old who looks like a 5 year old. Imagine an 18 year old dating a 13 year old or a 20 year old dating a 15 year old, it’s honestly weird. When they’re adults, it’s their choice but I suggest they wait until then. Btw, why are all of the 5th graders like a third of Donald Trump’s and Chess’s height? Since the 6th graders are only a year or 2 older? Like 5th graders aren’t that short. Gichan isn’t the best choice because of the teasing in prior episodes but he has good character development at least, and is Ari’s age and height! I mean idc if Donald Trump here starts dating someone a third of his size, but it’s just kinda weird since she looks like she’s a toddler. I don’t like any of the choices, but ultimately I end up with former bully Gichan.

I'm no anime enthusiast. I watched this show out of pure boredom but after some overanalyzing and blocking out everything that made me vomit... I really enjoyed it. At least from the villains' perspective.
A girl with abandonment issues fights to ensure a place where she finally has power and control only to realize the harm she has done along the way, especially to people who truly care about her. A boy with the chance to be approved by his mother again forces himself to be a villain but finds a girl who makes him feel safe and enough, only to realize he can't have her because of the brother he once looked up to.
I can deal with the lack of fight scenes, it doesn't harm my watching experience I didn't show up for fight scenes anyways. I can deal with the government propaganda, they're children and still figuring out who they want to be and being a magical girl who can magically be whatever profession helps when you're like, a helpless child that normally wouldn't be able to do anything. I can even deal with how one dimensional the main three are because again they're children, the only way I can imagine them changing is if they learn how to mature because of their powers. Chess is just the king of everything that ruins this show for me. I want to physically vomit every step he takes and I just have no idea what was going on in the writers' heads to make them think that making Chess 17 was okay.
I don't know where to watch season 2 and I don't want to know because I can't take another episode of Chess pining after Ari but I hope Shuel's perfume bottle reforms into a pepper spray can so she can blast Chess.
But you know what I will have more fun with? Rewriting this show :)

What a bizarre time... I love to see unconventional (or really retro, as the case may be here) takes on genres, so I wish this could have been uhhh. Not what it seems to be. Why does she look so young!! Why couldn't they have all been, I don't know, eight if that's what the writing seemed to be aiming for. It would have felt Off even if she'd had a love interest who looked like a normal 12 or 13 year old, it's just wild to go in... whatever direction that is. I just can't get over that combination of design and character choices.
I like the message; helping others is important. It's a good lesson. The animation is pretty and colorful, the music is nice, the transformations are short but cute. My ONLY problem is the romance in this anime.
If Ari and the guys were 17, sure they can date; it's not a toxic relation but no! She's a kid, Chess and Trump are teenagers. It's the only weird/embarassing thing in Flowering heart; the rest is great 🙂
I swear it was better in the Korean Version. Like, there was more deph in the writing, and there is more like... tween stuff idk. I also think that might be why Shuel is such an annoying character, like they mistranslated a few things. I've never seen the English version, so take this lightly tho. Iirc, Ari and chess never get togwther (THANK GOD) I watched all the seaslns when I was 9-10 and then again at 12. When I was 9-10 it wasn't as bad, but a lot worse at 12. Probably because I could see the plotholes.
ALSO there js a seen where Shuel gets kidnapped that scared the shit out of me as a little kid and in my opinion was done horribly.

I was really attached to this show as a kid and its really sad to realize this now that im older. I am planning to rewrite the plot and make a story minus theove triangle and with better tonal writing. I'm hoping to rewrite chess away from being a odd romantic interest and instead a big brother relationship and making Trump at least look like a kid since he is cannonically 13 while Chess is 17. I want to make it clear i don't condone rhe shipping of Chess and Ari and want to rewrite it to avoid that but still keep Chess in the story as a different relational values. Like finding a home with Ari while he never really was there for Trump. Would anyone be intrested if I did write this? (Sorry for rambling)
