Building a Bigger, Badder MIDI Mountain

- Let's assemble a MIDI RackMountain! The idea is the same as the first MIDI Mountain: combine a bunch of MIDI synths together to make a mountain of musical goodness. But instead of just stacking it all up, this time it's going in an 8U rack-mount case! Plus a few upgrades, like a rack-mounted Roland MT-32, an 8-channel mixer and MIDI thru box, a clicky power strip, and more vintage General MIDI modules. Also a stupid equalizer, ha.

For those asking about my main synth setup and what I make with it, there are a number of brief videos on Twitter showing that in action! twitter.com/lazygamereviews/status/1348468340776427520
I'll probably have an LGR video on it eventually though 👍
Do it! I feel like you could make a video on your carpet and that would be interesting too.
The GMega reminds me the Playstation 1.
Do you have a link to that case? I've never heard of that brand.
I would love to see a proper show about your synth setup. I'm just getting into the hardware game myself (Korg Minilogue XD, Wavestate and Arturia Drumbrute Impact, with a Behringer interface) but I'm brand new to MIDI etc. It would be useful to have your thoughts on stuff.
You need to do a video over the fairlight cmi if you get a chance
Legend has it, if you put enough of these MIDI devices together, they’ll collectively be able to play one WAV file.
only one? will they then immediately die?

**Shows setup that'd put a recording studio to shame**
Maybe a second channel devoted to music like 8-Bit Guy's 8-Bit Keys?
My thoughts exactly.
Seriously, that setup is quite impressive
It'd be cool to hear some of his stuff one day, if he ever decides to release a track or two
@@plasticsquid8914I'm hoping for an album
On the subject of the MT32 being on channel 2, that's an easy fix:
Use the following procedure to change the default receive channels of the MT-32 from channels 2-9 and 10 to channels 1-8 and 10:
1) While holding down MASTER VOLUME, press PART 5.
2) Press PART 1.
You might consider picking up a used Behringer DEQ2496 in place of that disappointing equalizer. That will give you a legitimate graphic equalizer and lots of fun flashing lights/buttons to play with.
They're not that expensive and would provide what you're looking for. The only challenge would be that the analog input is only balanced XLR but there are ways to go from single ended audio to balanced.
This reminds me of the opening scene to Back to the Future.
W0t up Ross!
Honestly, it does!
Plz do a Ross Dungeon episode about the leaked unfinished Warcraft point and click adventure: Lord of the Clans!
Just don't crank it to 11.
Minus the exploding speaker. LOL
Doom with all five Midi units running was some of the richest sounding Doom music I've heard to date.
Seriously rich.. The SC55 on it's own sounds like a desert by comparison
Yeah when the SoundCanvases came in it really widened out the stereo perspective. Those boxes have some good reverb in them.
Was going to comment to the same effect. All five at once sounded way better than any one of them on its own. I expected it to sound like a confused train wreck with everything slightly out of tune, but it worked amazingly well.
Seriously! if he recorded all the DOOM music like this in high quality and posted the videos, they would get SO MANY VIEWS over the years
@@MikeDawson1 LGR - plz do this?
15:36 When that second hand showed up I was like "that's perfectly aligned for a third, I hope he does it". And you did XD
It's awesome how you can perfectly mix multiple devices in sync, in real-time. And more so that it's all in one unit. Never stop being the dork that you are ^^
"IT JUST WORKS" I saw what you did there; nice one.
Me: Symmetrical midi unit stacking... just like the Philadelphia mass turbulence of 1947.

Holy shit! DOOM sounded freaking AMAZING there! Never heard it sound as good as that before! And that was seriously all 5 MIDI mixers going at once? It didn't sound like a garbled mess like I would expect from something like that. It just sounded.... Baddass! Like REALLY freaking good!
With all at once, that Doom sounded just like I remembered it sounded with SB16 xD
Doom and Passport both sounded amazing, actually
One of these days, Clint needs to play the Twin Peaks theme on the MIDI Mountain. That would be surreal and awesome all at once.

Glad to see that you're allowing your inner old Rasputin take over again.

If you feel that the Yamaha MU80 sounds a bit bland, that is because the unit was really made for the Yamaha's own XG standard. I bet if you feed it some XG data it will really shine. Good luck finding a module of the Akai brand in black. ;)
These days you'd probably just print a new fascia.
The Akai S612 is one of the rare Akai rack products with a black faceplate.

I had to comment once you said "I know some commenters say they don't like MIDI" lol. I remember in my youth, when MIDI was big, I found it extremely frustrating when I wanted to find an authentic song but instead got the MIDI version of it. Because of this, I grew a resentment toward it for many years...until you came along. Suddenly, I have a new found respect for it and it hits the nostalgia vibes for sure. I don't mind MIDI when it comes to games, just not the knock off music of actual songs (if that makes sense).
Anyway, I can certainly understand why you have a love for MIDI - and thank you for changing my mind about it after all this time. I still think it sounds lousy in comparison to actual instruments being played, but it's still cool nonetheless.
Holy crap! I haven't heard that Kawai GMega demo in about 25 years! That is the midi box we had when I was a kid. My brother traded our piano for it!

Love the midi videos! For cable management, it's recommended you separate power from audio. If you can dress everything to the sides and then zip tie cables to the rack rails by going through the holes, that's a solution we use. Another method are some rack bars that go across horizontally that mount like the units themselves.
That Kawai Demo. I swear, that song would sound perfect in a fantasy JRPG.

So when I was younger, we attended a Church obsessed with Midi, and your setup here would have been "the bees knees" for what they were trying to do

I find that the General MIDI devices stop sounding old and really start sounding modern when you have at least 3 of them playing at once.
When you have less, they sound dated but still oddly good.

Anyone who doesn't appreciate this labor of love is either too young to appreciate or too ill informed to understand how significantly convenient it is to have a single behemoth of a MIDI rack that can playback multiple formats of MIDI music by the turn of dials or by bay flicks of switches to enjoy. These individual external MIDI devices were EXPENSIVE back in the day and you were lucky if you could afford even generic solutions that imitated their sounds that were built into store bought PC setups back in the day one at a time...which were also expensive despite the generic price tag. All of these sounds that people find out of taste today will make a major comeback in years to come...mark my words 😇🧐
