  • This is part 2 of the reassembly of the Rotax 503 Engine. I planned on finishing it, but once again, I'm delayed because I don't have one part.
Follow along as I rebuild, repair, and upgrade a Challenger 2 ultralight airplane. Ultimately I will be flying this airplane into the north country of Canada, on fishing and camping trips, as soon as she is ready to fly.
    - Challenger 2 with a Rotax 503 Engine
    - Puddle Jumper Amphibious Floats
    - Kuntzleman Electronics LED anti-collision and strobe lights
    - GRT Avionics Sport EX EFIS
    - Radiant Instruments backup Altitude/Airspeed/VSI
    - Sheer Technologies 17 US Gallon Fuel Tank

Good luck with your build. 40 years ago we used drill rod 3/16 or 1/8 to sink the carbs. Even 2 - 16D nails works. Back the idle screws out.

Weight of spare fan belt, next to zero. Weight of tools needed to replace, dang it, there went the fishing rods. ;-)

I've been giving that a lot of consideration. But if I travel solo, and carry only what I would if backpacking, I'll be well under max weight even with full fuel. The fishing and camping awaits....
I will be carrying only the tools needed, and not a bit more. So the weight will be negligible for the tools as well.

Nice video. Can’t wait to see your bird flying. If you need a fan belt let me know. I have some. I hear there on backorder at LEAF.

Thanks for the offer, one is on the way. Should have it before the weekend. Still have the carbs to tear down and rebuild, but that is a quick job. Cheers.

Having a spare fan belt and some tools is an obvious thing to have. At least it is to me.

Thanks for the video. What engine oil do you use or recommend for this rotax 503 on an airplane?

What engine oil do I use...well, that question will get you as many different answers, as people you ask. The best engine oil, has become a point of contention with many people. I will answer this way. I use 2 stroke engine oil that is recommended by the Rotax service dealer in Canada. which comes with the very important instruction:
"Oils that are intended for marine (watercooled) 2-stroke engines are not suitable for use in UL-engines due to their low operating temperatures. Oils formulated for air cooled engines are recommended due to their high temperature properties."
Also, the following is the specifications you should be looking for:
Criteria for the selection of 2-stroke oil:
      - Super 2-stroke engine oil ASTM/CEC standard classification API-TC
      - The pour point of the oil must at least be 10 °C (18 °F) below the ambient temperature.
So...what 2 stroke oil do I use? Well, I use What ever is available, that meets the specifications listed above, and is on the shelves of the store I am visiting.

r u using a manometer tool to sync the carbs with? have you got the intake manifolds tilted up or down?

I was going to, but after a lengthy conversation with the Rotax service center, they explained how they do it with 100% success using simple tools. A very simple process, and they made a video covering that work. They posted it here on UA-cam.

@@embededfabrication4482 I have a 4 guage set that I used balance the 4 carbs on CBR600 track bike. I've done that many many times. The problem with 2 stoke however, is the pulse from the intake makes it difficult to get a reliable reading, unlike 4 stroke where the vacuum is steady. Their are pulse dampeners, and also some home made set ups that use clear hose, a common bottle, and colored water. But in the end Rick from Rotax Repair has a system that works very well. So I went with what he suggested.

I’m different to you, as if I put an engine back together, I find I have too many parts.

Hi! I need to review my rotax 503, I found this video of yours and I saw that you are following a manual. Could you share it?
    Thanks!

The manual I am using is the service and maintenance manual from the Rotax servicing course. The only way I know of getting one is to sign up and pay for the course, which I will be taking this fall.

Coming along nicely. could have been a 15 mnt video though. Stop blabbing so much bud. Also, when using lock tight, put some in the holes as well, not just on the bolt itself. You get better coverage.

      Hope this answers your question.
