    Rotax Engine Swap, Part 1
    Hi, I'm Courtney.
I want to talk about my plans to upgrade my Rotax five oh three engine to a more powerful five eighty two
My airplane is a Quicksilver MXL-2 that I built using the 52 horsepower Rotax five oh three.
It's a fine engine and I've no issues.
However, during the summer, due to high density altitude, it causes a noticeable power loss.
It also weighs into my decision-making when taking up passengers, too.
In addition, I like to fly at 8,000 to 10,000 feet above ground level.
It takes some time to get up there with the five oh three.
This helped me decide to upgrade to the 65-horse power Rotax five eighty two engine.
I've already acquired one and plan to send it to a Rotax shop for an inspection, and if necessary, a rebuild.
When I built this airplane, I used Tri-State Kite Sales' engine under-mount kit.
This kit relocates the normally top-mounted engine to under the wing.
I'm really impressed with the under-mount kit.
The new Rotax five eighty two will also be mounted under the wing using the same kit.
An area of concern is that my airplane has the Rotax “B" gear drive.
It will not work with this application,
so, I'll be looking for a "C" gear drive.
Lest you get confused, Quicksilver does mount some engines under the wing, however, the prop is driven by a drive shaft and a belt-pulley drive system.
While adequate for early low-horsepower engines, the introduction of the five oh three required Quicksilver to go from a 4 belt to a 5-belt pulley.
My new engine is too powerful for a pulley system.
I will have to figure out a new radiator system as the Rotax five eighty two is water cooled.
It will take me a while to gather all the parts needed to complete the swap.
I will keep you up-to-date with additional videos so you can follow along with my progress as I proceed and bring this project to completion!
I really appreciate you watching me.
And if you can, please support me at the Patreon link above or in the description section below!
I hope you learned something and I'll see you in the skies.
    Bye.

Hello Courtney , please take care of max coolant temp . It’s much lower in a 2 stroke engine , if remember it right it was max 80 C !!!
      Save and fun flying .

Courtney, It sounds like you are on track for the upgrade. Just be sure to match the gear box to the prop to put the correct load on the engine. 2 strokes need to have the load, carbs, exhaust and engine all matched.
When you have it running be ready for a lot of right foot....lots more torque !! You may want to fly single from the right seat to help offset the left torque. Bring the throttle up slowly and never go full throttle flying near stall speed.
My project for today is prop swap a damaged IVO on the 582 here..... may require my machine shop to cut and balance the blades to clear the tail booms and match this used 100hp 3 blade Warp Drive to the 582. Temp below freezing this morning but hope to fly it today.

I upgraded my Raven trike from a 447 to a 582 nearly 30 years ago... fun project and going from 40 to 65 HP made it much better, if a little nose high due to the increased weight at the back. You obviously love the Quicksilver, you could get something already more powerful? I seem to remember, is it Dragonfly?, that I got towed up in a hang-glider behind at Wallaby Ranch back in about 2000... they looked good

8000ft to 10000ft!?!? Sounds like it worked fine, even more than enough. Seems you have chosen a heavier and more complicated machine, worth it? Hope see you in a new video showing results. Best luck always!

One of the reasons for the two seater is that I can log the hours needed to get a CFI certificate. The hours on an ultralight doesn't count for anything.

Is fuel consumption a concern? Will a slightly larger fuel tank be a future consideration?

I already have the largest tank available -- 12 gallons.

Hi Courtney... Have you flown other part 104's ?..i.e. Aerolite,or others? Whats your favorite?

    • @CourtneyTakesFlight
      @CourtneyTakesFlight  4 місяці тому +1

I've flown a Challenger, Kolb and Quicksilver. Quicksilver is the winner. I'd like to try an Aerolite 103
