I really like your pacing and level of detail in this vid. I feel like a lot of youtubers are scared of increasing their runtime by pausing for breath once in a while, but we need time to process all the info. good stuff.
Something like 99.6% of tallgrass prairie has been plowed under and planted with row crops or destroyed by other means. I wonder if we’d accept that if it were any other ecosystem.
Damn, super high quality video! As an Albertan this caught my eye immediately. Interesting topic, clearly well researched, and engaging as well as being informative. Since you touched on European settlers and their impact on the land I would have loved to hear about the indigenous people who were the original custodians of the land and their relationship with the prairies. Stoked to watch the rest of your videos! Keep it up :^)
Thanks for the feedback! There is definitely a rich American Indian history that is a part of these lands. At least from what I've researched, a big part of their ecological relationship with prairie that really stands out from a modern perspective was their use of fire. It's only within the past few decades that we've really come full circle and embraced a lot of those traditional land management techniques, especially within the National Park Service. I've been collecting notes for a while now on fire management as its own broader topic and potential video. It's past use in prairie management would definitely be something I'd want to include!
