  • This 20 minute interview with Joanna Macy will help answer an essential question:
How are we going to live our lives fully, with inner peace and courage (and even joy) as we confront a world that is destroying itself?
Joanna is also featured in our film THE WISDOM TO SURVIVE: Climate Change, Capitalism & Community. Watch HERE: vimeo.com/ondemand/wisdomtosurvive/
"Thanks for this fantastic mini-documentary! You have captured Joanna Macy’s thought and spirit so beautifully. Frankly, it is breathtaking in its scope, clarity, and timeliness for this moment we find ourselves in.”
~ Kosen Gregory Snyder, Professor of Buddhist Studies at Union Theological Seminary
    And from Poet John Brehm:
"What wonderful timing to get this interview with Joanna Macy. I just taught a Poetry as Spiritual Practice session on Saturday on the poetry of grief, and I used several quotes from Active Hope. Macy is such a powerful voice - brilliant and inspiring. Alice and I watched the video last night and loved it. I'll share it on FB and send the link to my students, who I'm sure will appreciate it.

Mother Earth gave us all birth/
Yet we measure Her by Her wealth and girth/
Our shared Mother loves us all/
She is the blanket of stars that covers us all/
The Divine Mother is manifest in the environment/
It seems natural we protect Her as our superordinate assignment/
God is neither far away or hard to hear/
Listen to Her gentle voice stir the leaves/
Feel Her touch cooly caress your ear/
Know Her more than you believe.

Deep deep wisdom here. Thank you. And I was nodding my head to my heart over and over agreeing until “right wing politicians” and my heart sunk a little. I used to be an outspoken left supporter but I am now (contentedly) politically homeless. Because I realized: different wing. Same bird.

Haley, I like "different wing, same bird" and certainly Joanna Macy understands the non-separation you are referring to - the Oneness the mystics and physicists have tried to describe to us. But it's a fact that the behavior of the right wing politicians (including some democrats) is a stumbling block to meaningful legislation on the climate crisis, just to name ONE issue - which is the Mother of all issues. So, yes - "same bird" but I think it's true to say that the bird's right wing is broken these days and is impeding meaningful (and very necessary) flight. I pray that will change.

this is going to be very interesting (way better than a hollytrash movie)... of how the millions of shopping zombies of the global north will embrace a spiritual path (whatever that amounts to) in the face of near term extinction and a massive decline in resources. The crowd here in the comments, as usual idol worshiping to no end... DUH!

We are alive now. This party of life and civilization was already going on when we arrived.
    Nevertheless, let’s heed Joanna’s call.
What opportunity and possibility will we be?
What can we learn from Buddha’s dharma teaching?
We have been given a life, now. What is worth DOING?

There is NO logical reason why we, as a species, should succumb to the "lesser angels" of our human nature instead of our better ones. The fact that we have chosen the baser of our options is beyond adequate words. It will be the profoundest conundrum that I carry to my grave.
