- Spending the Day with my Mama for her Birthday. She took me to 2 nurseries that I've never been to.

I went to the Nature's Grower (Thai) nursery yesterday hopping to get some Thai basel. But they only had large green houses filled with non vegies like jasmine and soursop. I bought a papaya about 4 ft tall to replace my delicious one which was brought by a bird and grew all by itself between my torocco blood orange and my large Chandler Pomelo. The polar vortex last year killed the Chandler and the papaya because they were too large to protect. The Torocco, though not especially cold hardy compared to most citrus, survived and set several fruit this year. My plan is to keep the papaya potted this winter and plant it next March when hard freeze danger is past.
I loved watching you and mom shop. She is a treasure and so many people don't realize how much it means to them to do the simple things with their kids. Did you see any LIME trees anywhere? I can't seem to find one thats already grown a bit and I am not having much luck finding seeds either!

Hi, I guessed both nurseries.
JRN #2 is located at: 11701 Alief Clodine Rd. Houston, TX 77072. Actually on the Alief end and an extension of Harwin Drive.
Another large Vietnamese nursery is Joseph's Nursery near Bailey Rd & Masters Rd on the S. side of Pearland. They grow a lot of plants sold by the Hong Kong Mkt chain and Viet Hoa Mkt.
I'm ten years older than Mother Lai and grow mostly citrus and peppers and herbs. Arthritis keeps me from growing many veggies anymore.

I grew both the red and green Malabar last year, the red seemed to love heat more than the green. The more I cut, the more it grew, I grew mines in a grow bag and it did well.
I live closer to the JNR on the Southwest side.
Carefully consider your Malabar spinach placement. My husband cut it off in the middle of a south Texas summer, the cut portion lived, flowered and fruited for a month unattached to the vine. It seeded heavily and seemed it may become invasive.
Let us know what you think of it and if we should give growing it another chance.

Is it true that there are male and female papaya plants and how can you tell
That's what I've heard. But I'll have to do more research, since I'm new at growing papaya.
A long time ago that was the only case, but growers have developed some that have both flowers on the same tree. Birds dropped such a seed in my citrus grove and it made very good friut until the freeze in Feb. 2021.
You can tell by the female flowers being attached to the beginning of a fruit, like a cucumber or squash is.
We must be Texas neighbors. I was at the JRN nursery myself about 3 weeks ago. I went specifically for a grafted 3 in 1 asian pear tree and found this nursery thru Bob Wilson's nursery website. JRN gets lots of their fruit trees from Bob Wilson nurseries. I also ended up buying a Li jujube tree and a ponderosa lemon tree. They had lots I wanted but limited myself to those 3. It was fun to see you and your mom there. Enjoyed the video.
Thank you for watching neighbor. I'm about 1 1/2 hrs from the nurseries. After we move, I DEFINITELY know where I'm getting my fruit trees & bushes.
