I recently had to retire my worn out 30+ year old Meyer 7m, it just wouldn't play right anymore, uneven table... It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because I'm loving my Connoisseur, it has such a warm and complex sound. I play tested several high end pieces, but that was the one for me!
Thanks Jay. Both the angled cut on the Selmer shank and the brass ring on the Meyer are fully over the neck cork and neither has any effect on the internal geometry of the mouthpiece. Combine that with the fact that the mouthpiece doesn’t produce sound by vibrating anyway and I reckon we can safely say both design touches are cosmetic only. Cool though! Thanks for the vid. 🙏🏻
Been using the Selmer jazz flow for the past 2 months. Best investment ever. It’s my all time favorite mouthpiece. Thanks to sweetwater order it for me before they even had it up on their website. And at a really good adorable price

Burnin' Mouthpiece has that edge in the higher frequencies unlike Meyer Bros and Selmer where its quite muted but again for lead sound , Burnin' is good, seems like Meyer and Selmer has that Paul Desmondy Sound to it. Again I'm new to jazz since I play carnatic but I can still hear the difference in my headphones. Also thanks for showing the BetterSax Session Saxophone
I am just a year in on my ' taming the saxophone ' journey . I only own and play one mouthpiece and its around 76 years old ( circa 1948 ) Meyer New York . It came with my 87 year old ( circa 1937 ) saxophone when I bought it . They sound sweet together .
Great review all the mouthpieces are terrific The Meyer sound great and so does yours but I am a Selmer player and use their mouthpieces on all my saxophones I have liked the material they are made of! Jody Jazz Custom Dark @ $350 would be a much, much better deal than the Meyer @$366. Tye Custom Dark also has the brass ring at the end, but it is an amazing mouthpiece that provides a full tone to each note from the bottom of the horn through on to the highest altissimo one can squeeze out.
Jay, regarding your question about the shank trim angle, the Selmer Jazz Flow with ~24° angled shank trim will have no influence on the air stream since the mouthpiece chamber is transitioned into the neck at the neck entrance, sealed by the neck cork. After the neck cork seal the mouthpiece shank is no longer part of the mouthpiece acoustic system. Thanks for posting so many informative videos. cheers.
Selmer Jazz Flow has been my main mpc since it became available. The low register sub tones effortlessly, altissimo is great. It’s like a brighter Meyer similar to the V16. Congrats Jay, but the Burnin Sax adverts are getting a bit much but happy for your success.

Angled cut on Jazz Flow, Selmer really put some thought. Have you tried attach the hose to the pipe? Straight cut hose takes more time; angle cut hose works better. It is easier to slide the mouthpiece on the cork, then remove it, without much wobble and unnecessary pressure or damage on the cork. Also, less neck pulling (for those lazy ones to put mouthpieces on fully assembled saxes). Why nobody thought of that before? It takes a saxophone manufacturer to figure that out!
The angle that the mouthpiece goes into the mouth makes a huge difference in how it responds. I imagine Selmer did a ton of testing to figure out this is some type of improvement. Anyway, this video does a great job highlighting how good your line of mouthpieces is!
I have a connoisseur in 7 and it really good mouthpiece I love it, I tried the Selmer jazz flow in 7 and didn’t like the sound of it, it was too clean, lacking character in my opinion vs the Meyer.
I play on a Selmer Jazz Flow 7 and it is an incredible mouthpiece. I have found though it requires a harder reed than my other mouthpieces I use a Boston Sax Shop Silver label 3.5 while my usual 3 strength feels too soft.
The angle of the mouthpiece determines also to some extent the angle of the instrument while playing and that might have an impact on your embouchure and finally on sound. For example , a soprano sax will typically sound better if held on a 45 degree angle, which prompts manufacturers to offer instruments with a choice of a a craned neck to allow holding it at a steeper angle. Of course, the impact varies , depending on the individual player.
First impression (of the first phrases) of the Selmer Jazz Flow: it sounded more free-blowing than the Burnin' , but when you played in the lower register - - different story.
I have one of these in the 7 tip opening. To me, it is more free blowing than my V16 S+ A7, projects more, and is brighter. However, it is perhaps darker than my Java A35. The Java projects more and feels slightly more open than the Selmer yet is easier to stay in tune through the horn. This one is sort of in between the two. Overall, I’ll stick with the V16 and resolve to stop buying mpcs in ‘24!
I wonder how much resistance the Selmer Jazz Flow has. I played a Selmer Metal Jazz for years. I loved the tone, but it was very resistant. Altissimo was also difficult to achieve. I moved on from it, but I still play that piece every now and then. I was thinking of getting the Jazz Flow as an upgrade to the Metal Jazz. I guess I would hold off from that.
Try Drake mouthpiece, any of them are wonderful and has great balance between traditional and modern aspects, just try) I’m sure you will never forgot this feeling

Hi, could you please help me? I studied classical saxophone for 4 years. I really want to have a jazz sound, regardless, whatever mouthpiece that I used, it still sounds like Vandoren Optima 3 AL. I cannot change my sound.
$366 is an awful lot for a modern Meyer. It's a great sign that JJ Babbitt had you do a factory tour, but I'll wait to see what regular players are saying about their mouthpieces in a year or three before I spend any time or money trying one. The last time I heard a little chatter that Babbitt had decided to break their nearly 40 year streak of abysmal quality control was with the release of the 'Vintage' Otto Link pieces - I tried a few of those, and... well, you know what comes after "fool me once," right?
Hi Jay, yes the Jazz Flow lower register sounds brittle ... do you know whether the facing/lay is short or longer (medium)? I would not think it has anything to do with the wide rails, as I have a wide rail piece and it has no effect on the sound or playability. Your Burning 7 in comparison has a very nuetral sound, which is good.

The new Session is going to cost quite a bit more. It is going to be like an entry level pro model. The current model “Classic” will continue to be sold, but the price will be going back up.

I'm diggin' the sound, but I have a Soloist and a Soloist Style pieces for my tenor, and I have a similar issue having to adjust my jaw to break into the middle to low range. I wonder if it's related to the horseshoe chamber
No the shank doesn’t affect the angle of the mouthpiece at all. Small chambers make low notes more resistant. Since I’ve been playing larger chamber alto mouthpieces for a while now when I play a small chamber one I have to adjust a lot to get the low notes to speak. Even then not so full.
I have to agree with you based on the video, the burnin' is probably best bang/buck. but here's the issue.. I've tried a bunch of different mouthpieces in my day; some are more comfortable right away, some you need to get used to, but the bottom line is, as long as the mouthpiece physical design is suitable for your playing style, it doesn't need to be very expensive, as long as it's "properly" manufactured. I have an old Cannonbal #5 (2 mm opening) hard rubber mouthpiece on my alto similar in design to the Meyer and no amount of money I spend will make me sound any better; when I'm playing well, nobody could tell it's not a $400 mouthpiece. Btw, novice players will be less prone to squeaking with narower rails. The thicker rails tend to give a darker, fatter sound, and make playing softer a bit easier. Cheap mpc's have thicker rails, but only because mpc's are easier to manufacture that way. 👨🏻
Here's my guess. If a person prefers metal, it's going to be $200-$300+ for something new that's decent. If it's a decent hard rubber mpc, $50 is dreamingly cheap in today's economy.. probably more than $125 easily. How about a decent, but yet inexpensive plastic mpc? Now $50-$100 is probably in the ballpark. The only good cheap choice I know of is the cheap plastic Rico mpc's, but it isn't very difficult to feel and hear the benefit of an upgrade from one of those if you've been playing a while. I think they are about $30 new.
Lol, the point of a New York Meyer, probably the greatest, most copied alto sax mouthpiece ever made? Both the Selmer and Meyer blow away any silly Syos or smooth jazz wannabe Theo Wane metal for traditional jazz saxophone, so that’s why they exist.

I’ve tried both and I prefer the Jazz Flow. It had a little more edge compared to the Meyer without being too bright.

Depends on your previous mouthpiece. Going softer on reeds is often a good thing.

I bought an alto Otto Link Tone Edge a few months back and it is perfectly fine and a really nice mouthpiece to play.
The shank is cut like that on the Selmer so it falls off your counter or table and you have to buy another one. Marketing decision! 😂
