I was lucky to have had contact with a professional makeup artist in NYC who gave me this advice before I started working with clients. In all of the makeup books I have read, no where has there been information stating makeup should be disinfected, or how. Thank you for sharing this exceptional advice.
And 10 years later you still teaching people how to clean their makeup, thank you so much...i just did this with all of my eyeshadow palettes, didn't find a 90% one but a 70% one.
As a makeup artist/esthetician I have to say thanks for repping the sanitation part because it is a HUGE part of being a PROFESSIONAL that people never mention or see. Thanks!
Thank you for showing this. I wanted a way to disinfect my makeup but was afraid that any method would ruin the products and I'm frugal with a lot of products and can toss them and replace, no big deal. Its those outrageously expensive ones, the investment ones I can barely afford to begin with that I needed a way to disinfect. Thank you so very much for actually showing this doesn't destroy the products.
With lipliners and eyeliners you should also use a sharpener to take a full layer off otherwise it is not safe. Another thing is sterilising as spraying with alcohol is not going to kill viruses, fungi etc. That is why you rather dish out everything you can onto a mixing palette and use disposable items such as mascara wands, sponges and lip product applicators. I would walk out as a client if the MUA wasn't disinfecting or working with sterile tools.
Noemi Keddle alcohol 91% does kill bacteria and viruses by denaturing the protein or by disrupting the cell wall. The virus or bacteria is less stable outside the body. Look it up if you are unsure.
You’re right about cream products. However alcohol kills bacteria and fungi and other things don’t thrive as much in a dry powder environment and it is standard to be able to spray your palettes with ONLY 70% alcohol bc any higher and it doesn’t disinfect www.cdc.gov/infectioncontrol/guidelines/disinfection/disinfection-methods/chemical.html
Virginia Owensby 90% doesn’t have enough time to kill bacteria and other illnesses here’s to CDC telling us 70% is necessary bc any higher and it evaporates and cant properly disinfect only clean. www.cdc.gov/infectioncontrol/guidelines/disinfection/disinfection-methods/chemical.html
Thank you for posting this, I had NO idea how to actually clean my makeup. I am NOT a makeup artist so it's only used for myself, but I didn't know *how* to clean and disinfect makeup. Thanks so much, I really appreciate it.
I am so glad to see you do this. I'm a cosmetologist and am highly concerned with sanitation. Years ago I did make-up, and am getting back into doing it, this time for a tv show, after years of doing just hair. I've had make-up artists come into the salon to do weddings and some of them had horrific hygiene habits. I use Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner on my tools, and 99% isopropyl alcohol on my make-up. I order it through the local drugstore. Thanks again and blessings!
THANK YOU for this vid...no one emphasizes how important product hygiene is. This alone made me subscribe! NOTE:So refreshing to see your passion AND seriousness for your craft shining thru.
This is a GREAT vid! I've been preachy, preachy on this exact thing for YEARS with my daughters. ALWAYS disinfect after you've been sick or had any kind of issue.
Seriously most of the people I know are obsessed with make-up- yet very few of them EVER clean any of their gear! HORRIFIC! It freaks me out. And then they wonder- what is going on with their skin! Even if you never share your gear- AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK WASH EVERYTHING! This video is SO very important. Glad you made it. On the brushes, soap, COLD water, lay them flat on a towel - so you don't melt the binding and damage them. Very cool- I'm enjoying your channel so much! Thank Yooooo!
bookerdog1234 it's a good idea to do it with your own makeup because a build up of oil ruins eyeshadows. You can just wipe the surface of your pressed powder products after using them, rather than using alcohol spray because the idea is just to get rid of the layer of oil so that it doesn't permeate the eyeshadow. I never used to but as I'm building a makeup kit atm for professional usage I spray my products with 100% isopropyl alcohol (lower percentages contain water which can rust or ruin products, especially tins that are suitable for magnet palettes) and it dries really quickly! I also use spray alcohol on lipsticks if I want to use it from the tube
@amybaby18 the idea of using alcohol is that it evaporates very quickly and it does not stay in your makeup, and doesn't ruin it either that's why he did swatches at the end :) I use alcohol to clean my makeup and in seconds everything's dry again. Another thing, if the alcohol somehow managed to stay in the product, nothing happens cause rubbing alcohol it's meant to be used on people's skin, for scratches etc. hope it helps!
I totally agree about disinfecting all make up products. I am not a make up artist but I'm so into makeups and I personally believe that the BEST makeup base a good skin to begin with. One of the basic makeup use is to hide imperfections so why add more by using dirty and contaminated makeup on your face. I've been perfecting how to clean my humble makeup brushes but never thought of disinfecting my makeups. Thanks for the great tip!
You are awesome. I am slowly getting into the makeup artist industry and have a fashion show this weekend. I was at my wits trying to find information on how to disinfect my brushes and palettes and continue to work but this video has helped me immensely. THANK YOU!!
Thank you for addressing this subject. It's very important when you're using the same products on multiple clients. I can vouch for this technique. When I was going to school for Cosmetology, we sprayed our powder products down with rubbing alcohol between clients. As Wayne stated, with liquid & cream products, we'd use a clean, beauty spatula to take product, place it on a clean palette. 😀
+ Wayne Goss THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!! A lot of my friends do not believe me, when I say it's very important to disinfect your makeup, they use dirty brushes or sponges for months on end, don't even bother to see whether there is an expiration date on the product, and wonder why their eyes get all red and itchy when they use mascara's that (I kid you not) are sometimes more than a year old, interchange their makeup, and complain when I don't want to lend them my lipstick or eyeshadow palette. So, again, thank you, you're a Godsend. I knew that already but this is the first time I see one of your "old" vids. By the way, you look so much more handsome now, not that you didn't then, but now you're so...mature and "manly, sexy"...you make me wish I was a guy...I'd take my chances for sure ! xo's 💝
My niece is like that. I've given her instructions for washing her brushes with dish soap (to disinfect), a device to hang her brushes upside down to dry, and a thorough explanation as to why she needs to be disinfecting her makeup and brushes. I've also given her 70% rubbing alcohol and shown her how to disinfect with it. I always spray my makeup with alcohol before sharing it with her, and I've explained to her that certain products cannot be disinfected (liquid products, mascara, etc.), but it goes in one ear and out the other. I end up disinfecting her makeup for her lol
I really appreciate you putting his up. I’m an esthetics major and I love doing make up but my teacher makes me use sponges for everything and I can’t do a proper make up job like that obviously. Especially when I love using brushes. So THANK YOU
Ohhh look at the younger Wayne Goss! It doesn't look like u have aged a day! Love all ur videos. U have always been my go to person when it comes to makeup. Much ❤ from Virginia!
I have heard that spraying alcohol on your makeup is ok and then I have heard its not. but from what I have seen it doesn't damage my makeup at all. great video. your the bomb;)
Thank you so much for this. Hygiene is the main reason I don't get makeup done at beauty makeup counters, because I never see anyone clean the makeup after applying it to strangers. Thank you and I will do this for my own makeup.
this is a vital issue to disinfect the makeup products. besides this, i rarely see someone gives detailed info about keeping them clean who has make-up vlog. Special thanks to this video...
Ugh, this is why I want to do my own make up when I get married. The more I watch your videos & also Sinead's (TheMakeupChair), the more I realize how important it is to disinfect make up & also wash our make up brushes. I've never seen a make up artist in Indonesia does that. Made me cringe to think that I had let dirty sponges & brushes touched my face :/
Thank you, you are wonderful. Dr. Oz says you can also freeze your mascara and cream make up (at least every 3 weeks) to kill bacteria, and suggests scraping off a top layer of your powder make up every month for those that don't want to spray. You can do a google search on his article. A huge recommendation from Oz....clean the bottom of your purse, wallet etc with a spray alcohol as thats where us gals pick up lots of gross stuff....Thanks for this video, now I won't toss things so fast
Glad this showed up on my related videos... A friend at school wanted me to do her makeup tomorrow and I would hate to spread something around... =) Thanks for keeping the beauty world safe and clean!
This was sooo delightful to watch! A marvelous trick that I had no idea off, brought to me by the very adorable Wayne Goss of the past:) Sending you lots of love from California ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🌴🌞
This was exactly my guess as to how to clean my eyeshadows. I am germophobic very much so and I sometimes use alcohol to clean. I worry if i dont wash my brushes for the week and I know how quickly alcohol dries and that it could even be used to re-form makeup. I also didnt want to risk doing it and ruin my ABH pallette. Thank gawd I can now move on with my life. So glad I came across it.
Thank you so much for making this video! A few months back i went out on a search for it and bought 'rubbing alcohol', no ingredients stated but it said contains alcohol... got home and mixed it in with my brand new cracked mac shadow and it now has a awful smell and has become chalky. Rubbing my finger in the eyeshadow dries out my finger! I have since gave up but today i saw a little bottle of surgical spirit, contains 96% alcohol but wanted to look it up before testing again :) It works!
Thank you so much for this video. I have just started applying makeup to others and wondered how to disinfect my palettes. There are many videos on cleaning brushes but this is the first one I've seen on disinfecting makeup. Brilliant!
This is such an important point of discussion - most people seem to think that as long as you use disposable wands etc that its fine but as you said they fail to consider the actual product they're dipping into
Hello...I learned this disinfecting technique about 18 years ago and have been using alcohol on all my makeup, blushes, eye shadows since. Thank you for sharing for all.
You should wear a mask when you spray your makeup. Like a painters mask that is ventilated. I wear one when I vacuum because I am very allergic to dust and other allergens. It may help with your headaches...good luck! Thanks for your videos...you're great!
Thank you very much for posting this video. I read how to do it from text books (I'm studying to become a certified makeup artist), but really wanted to see it performed properly before doing it myself just to be cautious and to ensure that I did it properly. Anyway, thanks once again. I wish you all the best. :)
awesome tips. i just recently got over a horrible eye infection due to makeup products not being disinfected. love your videos and this one especially. its nice to know that some people are sanitary. xD kudos, sir.
Thank you for doing this very important video.!!!! your method is so inexpensive and easy to do . it is soooooo uninspiring to put dirty old makeup on a clean face. defeats the whole purpose of enhancing what you have. ick Ick ick. lol. tks again. nobody ever talks about this. you might want to do this again in an expanded version with brushes, tweezers, tools, etc. best to you :).
I love this video! I just got started with selling Avon, and I was wondering how I might let my customers try & buy. I have seen some of your other videos so I trust your advice, and I'm glad that "cleaning" my makeup will be so cheap and easy! :)
Love the videos. I work in a pediatric office and about once a year no matter what I do, I get pink eye. I use to have to throw out all my eye make up! U have saved anyone that works with kids!! But I do have one question, what about gel eye liners? Does this work for that too?
This is extremely important and helpful! Not only it will keep diseases from spreading from one person to another, but also, prevent your face from breaking out, etc. Thank you so much for the video =D
I love your videos! You are one of the very best subscriptions on UA-cam. I learn something new every time I watch you. You supply great information and you're really cute to boot! Thanks!
love you wayne thanks for teaching me cleanliness about makeup and now im looking at these other beauty gurus nasty because they dont talk about cleaning there makeup even if its just for you its always good to keep the brushes clean
Great info! Thanks! I would love to get your advice on brushes. I do not own a single brush and would like to get some, but as few as possible as I am not very experienced and would not know how to use them anyway. Could you tell us which ones are most used and\ or how could we be using each? Thank you! PS: I watch all the videos you post but normally do not leave comment because I do not know the make-up lingo very well yet.
I love these methods you share with us. This is just so easy, so cheap and so important. Thanks for sharing. I've been known to toss items used on others or I'll give them what I've used on them. This will change things dramatically for me!!
You seem much happier now...I believe you look healthier now. Either way, you are extremely handsome. Thanks for this tutorial. I missed it when it was originally released. I would have been terrified to spray alcohol on my powder makeup products. Now they can be as sanitary as my lipsticks and pencils. Thanks Goss :)
Thanks for the informative video. My question is if you disinfect your makeup do you still need to throw it away after a certain time frame? For example I heard you should toss powder products after 2 years.
I always did this. No one taught me, I just put it in a small spray bottle as Wayne and sorted everything. I was in Sephora and asked the make artist to spray the makeup before I tried it on my hand. She told me it would ruin the makeup, not sure where she learned this but I explained I am a makeup artist and have been doing this for years. Later on I was in Sephora and she told me she does it now all the time when she saw the makeup was fine.
Great Video! I was curious as to how this is done. Thanks. Also, First let me say I have not seen all your videos. So if you have answered this question already I apologize. I would like your opinion on MAC's Fix Plus also the Rose scented version. If you do like them ..is the Rose version ok for sensitive skin? One other product I am curious about is Makeup Forever HD Powder...Some UA-cam videos say this is ok for over 40 DRY skin and that it doesn't cake or settle in lines. Is this True? K
This is the first video of yours that I ever watched and it was after I threw out all my eye makeup after I had an eye infection :( I've been watching you ever since.
So glad to find your video, so I don't have to throw away my old makeup. That makeup pallette is gorgeous, who makes it? Would those colors be good for blondes with yellow undertones?
So I just found your videos and subscribed immediately! I absolutely love you!!!! I love your tips and I love that you are so down to earth!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I will recommend you to everyone I know that watched videos!!!
thank you so much for this advice, i got a huge collection of eyeshadows and other makeup devices and lipsticks, all high end brands such as dior chanel UD , i did do it the way you ve explained and my make up is always fresh and clean, im really happy coz before i wa just throwing away paletts from dior chanel estee lauder, now i desinfect them and they really dont get ruined by the alcohol, thx so much, only thing, before you close the palettes and lipsticks make sure everything is really dry
Thank you so much! I really need to disinfect my makeup, but I haven't because I've been afraid of ruining it. This will solve my problem, thanks again :)
great tip!!!! thanks so much for sharing!! your tutorials are really usefull!! do you happen to know the ingredients of mac brush cleansing fluid? is it the same?
yes i've some doubts about that because i did it with a mascara but i don't think that the water temperature was such hot...anyway it worked to make the mascara more fluid! if you have a mascara you are intended to throw away it'd be an idea to try....
Thank you for the great tip! I've wondered what happens at the fashion shows where artists are applying makeup so fast and doing so many models...how they keep it all safe for all. Now I can do this at home.
I've loved your channel since they day I've subbed and I swear you are so helpful. I appreciate the content you create, I honestly do. Thank you so much!
Good video! I have been a makeup artist for over 20 years and I use a little spray bottle of alcohol just like he does for my kit. Everything he said is true. It does not ruin the makeup and it is especially great for cleaning the metal teeth of eyelash combs!
I absolutely love your videos! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise as well as your opinions on products and techniques. I have learned SO much from you and I am sure I will continue to.
Great video the only concern that I have is how you would disinfect your foundations that are in the bottles ex Avon's Invisible Coverage Foundation? When you pump it out of the nozzle does this mean that it's already sanitary or should you wipe off the nozzle after every use?
Great tutorial! I'm a total clean freak and i hate working with dirty makeup! But will this method work on loose powders or mineral foudnations/powders/blushes? i mean, it seems kind of weird to be spraying liquid into sth dry and powdery! haha
Great tip-- I use it too--- but I agree the smell is intense... You can get it really cheap at 92% for like 2.99-4.99 for 500 ml at drugstores or walmart
Goss, just want to say how much I appreciate your information, all the sharing and your approach. If I have a 'tough' question, I almost always end up back on your channel to get my answer! So, thanks and please keep it up! ;)
Can you remake this video so that we can know you still use this method *****
That would be great!
Bump in 2019 🙏🏻

Does anyone know if Wayne has done another video on this topic?
I was lucky to have had contact with a professional makeup artist in NYC who gave me this advice before I started working with clients. Agreed!
And 10 years later you still teaching people how to clean their makeup, thank you so much...i just did this with all of my eyeshadow palettes, didn't find a 90% one but a 70% one.
Did it affect the quality of the eyeshadows to use 70% instead of 90%?
…I only have 70% in the house too. Should I go get 90?
Oh my gosh I never seen Wayne's old videos ! Look@ him looks so young and that T ! So awesome
As a makeup artist/esthetician I have to say thanks for repping the sanitation part because it is a HUGE part of being a PROFESSIONAL that people never mention or see. Thanks!
FINALLY someone smart enough to show how to do this and someone who is actually concerned with their clients safety!! Excellent!
Another tip I highly recommend, with a napkin wipe the makeup first, take off the excess oils on the makeup, then spray with the alcohol.
Thank you for showing this. I wanted a way to disinfect my makeup but was afraid that any method would ruin the products and I'm frugal with a lot of products and can toss them and replace, no big deal. So true! It's because it has higher water content and has longer evaporation time and longer time to penetrate the surface and disinfect. 😉
it’ll also ruin the shadow though
@@noneofyourbusinesskaren2567 - Hi. Which will ruin the shadow? The 70% or the 90%? Thanks for your response. I hope you. Get this.
I think Rachel was saying that 70% would ruin the shadow because of the water content.. I could be completely wrong though
true

awesome tips. i just recently got over a horrible eye infection due to makeup products not being disinfected. love your videos and this one especially. its nice to know that some people are sanitary. xD kudos, sir.
I do this! I feel so proud for being a good makeup artist even if I'm far from well known.
Wow! You look so young...... 💞 I love all your videos. Your the only person who I feel keeps it real with people.
awe, baby Goss
You seem much happier now...I believe you look healthier now. Either way, you are extremely handsome. Thanks for this tutorial. I missed it when it was originally released. I would have been terrified to spray alcohol on my powder makeup products. Now they can be as sanitary as my lipsticks and pencils. Thanks Goss :)
Awwww young Goss. So cute and helpful as always.
I was telling someone that I sprayed my makeup and we argued about if you should or not. I'm going to direct them to this video
Thank you so much for posting this information! I am just starting to do makeup and I know how important it is to keep things clean!!!!
Is this True?

hi! thank you so much for uploading. very informative. thank you for caring about makeup hygiene! standards are really falling these days.
This is the first video of yours that I ever watched and it was after I threw out all my eye makeup after I had an eye infection :( I've been watching you ever since.
So glad to find your video, so I don't have to throw away my old makeup. That makeup pallette is gorgeous, who makes it? Would those colors be good for blondes with yellow undertones?
awesome tip! i clean my brushes with that, but i never thought of using it on my eyesadow palettes! thank you sooo much!
So I just found your videos and subscribed immediately! I absolutely love you!!!! I love your tips and I love that you are so down to earth!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I will recommend you to everyone I know that watched videos!!!
I'm sorry but I'm looking at his shirt like...Do you ever feel-like a plastic bag?
Alaina Atk. 😂
Alaina Atk. Lmao!!!!!
Alaina Atk. pretty sure that's the idea
😂😂😂😂😂
lmao same!
Thank you so much for doing this! I've been wondering for a long time how I can disinfect my makeup and you've helped me out :D thank you again!
thank you so much for this advice, i got a huge collection of eyeshadows and other makeup devices and lipsticks, all high end brands such as dior chanel UD , i did do it the way you ve explained and my make up is always fresh and clean, im really happy coz before i wa just throwing away paletts from dior chanel estee lauder, now i desinfect them and they really dont get ruined by the alcohol, thx so much, only thing, before you close the palettes and lipsticks make sure everything is really dry
Thank you for your response. I use mostly powders, so I set for a very long time :-)
Thanks a bunch for the tip! You are right, something so important and there is no information on how to prevent bacteria on your face. xo
Thank you so much! This girl has been waiting for a video on cleaning makeup.
Thank you so much! I really need to disinfect my makeup, but I haven't because I've been afraid of ruining it. This will solve my problem, thanks again :)
great tip!!!! thanks so much for sharing!! your tutorials are really usefull!! do you happen to know the ingredients of mac brush cleansing fluid? is it the same?
aww this video made me so proud. this is exactly what I've been doing just out of common sense, yet I doubted myself. thank you!
You are a good tracher. Simple, basic instructions everyone can understand. Thank you.
yes i've some doubts about that because i did it with a mascara but i don't think that the water temperature was such hot...anyway it worked to make the mascara more fluid! if you have a mascara you are intended to throw away it'd be an idea to try....
Thank you for the great tip! I've wondered what happens at the fashion shows where artists are applying makeup so fast and doing so many models...how they keep it all safe for all. Now I can do this at home.
Awww you look like a baby!! Great idea I never think about disinfecting my makeup
Awesome. You and Enkore are great in terms of being highly keen on hygienic issues.
I just had a party and did makeup on a bunch of young girls and I am so happy I found this video. I am definitely doing this from now on. Great video.
THANK YOU!! You're right, there aren't many videos on here that have to do with cleaning/disinfecting ones make-up. So thanks for posting this. :)
I’d love to see an updated video on this. I enjoyed this one🙂 but am curious to see if your routine has changed or if it is the same.
Just strolling down memory lane, don't mind me. : )
Oblong Polka Dots me too! Lol
Goss, just want to say how much I appreciate your information, all the sharing and your approach. If I have a 'tough' question, I almost always end up back on your channel to get my answer!
So, thanks and please keep it up!
;)
