I think my problem with juni taisen is that the characters underestimate the others and it leads to their easy deaths

Like... this is an event that hasn't happened for the first time and brings in some of the strongest fighters. How can even the more experienced people (who already fought in it) be so incredibly stupid to underestimate *any* of other fighters? I don't see how any weak fighter could even *enter* that battle royale without being sorted out beforehand.
It's just so... argh. It's even not only one person who does that and meets their sudden demise!
I love the show, but this is such a huge minus on the character/story writing.

Look if you’re in some sort of 12 way UFC street royale rumble, you sure as hell are gonne see them give respect to their opponents. Just the simple act of focusing on an opponent can lead to an assassination attempt / sneak attack from another competitor.
You can underestimate them on the outside but your internal monologue should give high respects and in NO way should you ever try to confront someone who can kill you without a strong defense. Horse at least did this but his character was figuratively thrown down the gutter.

Exactly. The more I look at it, the show is more so feels like a remake of the ancient Chinese tale of the Zodiac where the animals were fighting for a spot in the Zodiac cycle.
It's actually based on a light novel as well.
I haven't read the manga... but the moment you showed me Rat instantly pointed and said he would win. Now people keep saying they "Have seen him somewhere before" so now I just want to know what his power fully is.
Also why these characters are just... lacking tactical sense when it comes to their opponent.
There's hiding in plain sight and then there's "Don't research our gimmick because we straight up copied it."
Once you know the pattern it becomes even more obvious: 1) Zodiac member becomes the POV character. 2) They fuck themselves over by being a dumbass. 3) Repeat with the next Zodiac member.

I think 2 last alive will be Rat and Ox, and Ox will die from poison. Rat is lazy and he sleeps a lot so his metabolism is probably much worse than Ox, so the poison will activate in his stomach later that in Ox

Really? I saw Rat as being hyped up too much to be the MC, he seems more like a final boss to me, along with Ox.
Tiger on the other had five episodes of being viewed as the underdog and eluding screentime, as if the show was intentionally trying to keep our attention off of her. To me, she seems much more like an MC than Rat does.
I really like how we followed Boar from the beginning and thought she was the main character because we saw her backstory but

I also found it ironic that most of the characters found her to be one of the strongest and tried to avoid her but she was the first one to die and turned out to be irrvelant to the plot so far

The show focused way too much on her in the first episode. As soon as we got her backstory, i knew she would die at the end of the episode. I was just wondering who was gonna kill her. This show couldn't be more predictable, even if it tried.

Yeah I thught the same thing. Is according to the order in the chinese zodiac. Also...even when I LOVE the rabit... I know is going to win the Rat. And there is a very interesting story there, because in the first episdes some of them mentioned that they think they know the Rat but they dont remember where... But I love the character design of the Rabitt. Is so .... creappy. Love the video!! :D

The second the first character died, my basic knowledge of the Chinese zodiac let me know who was going to win... Still fun to watch, though.

The animals in the anime are the same ones that appear on the Chinese zodiac (I think 2017 is the year of the rooster for example). Pig is the last animal on the chinese zodiac which lines up with pig dying first in the anime, and he death order has followed the zodiac in reverse so far.
I'd avoid actually looking up the animals (and watching the show's ending) if you don't already know since it will spoils the death order.

Is it me only who would love to see an entire season focusing on just the twins Dragon and Snake ? Their backstory as rogue mercenaries, with questionable morals, vague motivations as well as their dynamic is just so intriguing and entertaining. I for one would love to see that.

Its on the bloody ending. Its kinda late for that.
It's not a spoiler. You are supposed to know it. EVERYONE in Japan knows the Chinese Zodiac Race, so Juuni Taisen was written with that in mind.
Now, if you enjoy not knowing who will die next, you can avoid looking it up. But I would be very surprised if they aren't going to throw the people who do know it a curveball somewhere down the line.

The music for this series sounds right up my alley. That choir music you were playing the beginning sounded amazing.
Of course, that ignores that the winner becomes obvious if you're paying attention by the end of episode 3. Honestly, while I am very much enjoying the show, I'm watching it at this point out of the potential of great action scenes later and my interest in the characters, rather than wanting to know who wins in the end, because I already figured out who does. Also, i personally find it obvious that Rat is the main character. Lazy kid who nobody knows a thing about, is underestimated, and has only succeeded in running away thus far? Yeah, it seems obvious that he's the main character and has hidden potential hat the anime hasn't shown yet.
Sadly, I disagree, it's not a good battle royale show because the fight scenes are badly executed. While for the first two it was cool to see good fighters underestimate another one and die abuptly without getting a change to use their powers, repeating the same thing for every fight instead make it's just predictable and boring. They hype up a character just to disappoint us. I wanted some of these characters to fight an epic level battle scene.

I haven't watched any of Junni Taisen yet, I'm waiting for it to complete and then binge watch.
Juni Taisen reveals the winner in the intro basically. Rat’s eyes are different than all the other characters, and he’s the only one shown to blink in the line up. This differentiates him from the others; plus, it follows the Chinese zodiac myth, so it’s obvious who wins if you know the myth. Rip Dragon and Snake though; they were so interesting as characters
Well the ending theme is actually pretty accurate and probably straight up exactly the order.
*Spoiler but barely, I'm only speaking after watching up to episode 7*
The only reason the snake is later in the death sequence on the end theme is because that's probably when his corpse will be destroyed because he's been a corpse since episode one.
To continue, the monkey's plan was never revealed and she died before she could which seems like lazy writing, the magical aspect came out of nowhere based on the trailers which also felt like lazy writing after the trailers set up so much action sequences that are just suddenly ended with magical powers. The actual action scene we were pitched in the trailers was stunning but the fights in the series itself are just not that quality after that first episode. The plot is minimal and I think we can pinpoint who will win based on who is likable. Personally I don't think the winner is all that likeable even, we know it's the rat and he's just some edgy highschool brat who hates everything and wants to sleep all the time BUT out of the survivors he's the most likable because the dragon has had no build up til this last episode, the rabbit just can't win because he's not appealing enough to the masses, the bull is too cold to win, the tiger has barely any character build up. Out of all of the current survivors, the rat has been around the most, had the most build up, and he hasn't really done anything to be hated yet. It's just obvious he'll win even without the end theme and calendar to tell us that.
Can we also talk about how building up the characters just before you kill them off is a bad way to do it? Takes the surprise out of it because you already know who will die next every time. Even IF they switch it up in the end, it's safest to assume the rat will win though and there's no real attachment to 90% of the characters. The action scenes just don't make up for the lack of character development and all of the deaths were spoiled from the start.
To sum it up, nothing about the series surprises me anymore because it spoils itself from the beginning AND has the classic "set the character up just to die" trope. The action scenes are lackluster from what the trailers set up, they writing is lazy avoiding explaining something complex like the Monkey's plan, and overall I highly doubt there will be much of a twist ending at all. The only possible twist I can see is that when the rat wins, he reveals he knew the Monkey's plan and revives everyone and even that would be poor writing because after the Monkey's death, he says to himself that "it's a shame she died without revealing her plan" which implies he doesn't know it either. It's like saying "this isn't who the killer is" then ending it saying "we lied", that's not a twist, it's poor writing.
I am giving the series the benefit of the doubt til it ends but I'm not getting my hopes up and I very highly doubt it will be remembered a few years down the line based on what has happened so far. If anything the only character worth remembering is the rabbit because he's so unique in appearance for a show of this type.

I've been waiting for you to talk about this one! I for one am enjoying it so far (watching it in dub on Funimation- which is really well done). I love it for the same reasons. I like that there is no one clear protagonist, which we, correct me if I'm wrong, have never really gotten. Especially when in the beginning we're lead to think that it's Boar, only to be quickly relieved of that belief. Definitely looking forward to what this series has in store; it's my favorite anime this season.

As for what makes a good battle Royale anime, I think you also have to look at what is the premise. The examples you mentioned, Future Diary and Fate/Zero, have stories where Battle Royale is just a backdrop for the events that occur for main character stories to be told. The progression of those events can still be tense, thrilling and can get you worried about the main character, which, is the main point about those kinds of BR stories. Hell, even the original movie had that and I think that is the point.
A pure Battle Royale anime, while sounds interesting would have the problem of having characters that you don't know about duke it out until the victor comes out of the meat grinder and I think that is not what anime producers think of when greenlighting an anime. They probably think that it needs a main character for people to follow etc. Not saying it can't be done, Junni Taisen seems do be proving that, but I think a pure Battle Royale which comes down to luck and skill is best applied to personal experiences (games, simulators) and not in a heavily story focused media like anime.
Well to those that don’t know the lore or order behind the animals, or choose NOT to watch the ending song, you’ll fully enjoy it and probably at the edge of your seat on some parts. It’s not perfect, but it’s enough to fill the gap between waiting for something new or are bored.
I saw Battle Royale in the title, and I thought that someone made an anime based off the movies.
They show he death order in the credits. You could totally guess who won.

I was just about to start watching episode 4 of this series, then a notification pops up.
Haven't heard of this so thanks for introducing me to it! Hopefully styles like this where there's no protagonist can kick off to make things more interesting.
Not only do they die in reverse order of the chinese zodiac, each episode their backstory is featured in goes in order of how they appear in the credits.
its sorta like the first 3 seasons of game of thrones, so many main-like characters and its setting allows for any character to die at any time
I love how the anime immediately kicked into action. The art and animation is absolutely splendid. I don’t know who’s to die next as well. I don’t want to be spoiled about it despite the fact I now know that it’s determined in reverse order. I won’t look it up. I love battle royales, especially movies with battle royales. Giving a few of these characters a backstory is slightly intriguing, but some of the deaths were so irregular, I had to think about it for a second. It’s as though the thought process for one zodiacs death was just skipped or poorly thought. Either one of those two, or the directors just wanted to emphasize Bunny’s superiority. The highlights on each character’s appeal make you wonder who will win (if you don’t know yet like half of the people in the comments). Can’t wait to see the winner!

Actually the ED of the show tells you the order of theirs deaths, after watching the first 3 deaths of the show I saw it and I confirmed that was the case.
They say it's getting predictable,yet the ride is enjoyable.
What I learned from this anime is that underestimating the situation will always get you killed

While to an extent, you can predict who is going to die, I'm hoping, like he said in the video, it is a feint to trick us into thinking we know who the winner will be, but actually be surprised when it comes to the end. Also despite the predictability of the order of deaths, I'm able to find the show exciting because it's hard to predict who will kill them and when and I think that makes it great. In Battle Royale, you need unpredictability and surprise to keep it exciting. On another note, I'm still interested in finding out about how this game came to be and is run, as well as what will be the winner's wish. I've only seen the first 4 episodes but I'm finding it really enjoyable and it's one of my favourites of this season along with Kekkai sensen and Net-juu Susume.
I just like the fact that characters aren't suddenly clairvoyant and know who is and isn't dead, also I thought about the order of deaths and how SPOILER snake was in the middle because that's when his corpse would die but then monkey now ruins that because she would now be a puppet to but with that it's now out of order, so I still think we might get some twists

I absolutely loved the ending.
If you look at the ending, or even look up the chinrse zodiac, you will know the order of deaths and even the winner.
And it does the lane backstory leading up to deaths

It's one of those shows you watch for about 20 minutes and when it's over you wonder if it was really 20 minutes long when it felt like 6 minutes. I get the same feeling with Inuyashiki and Fate Apocrypha.
After watching this instead of heading to the comments I just went ahead and watched the show and man, it's really obvious who is gonna win. Hopefully they shake it up a little bit but I doubt they will.
As far as the ending shows and how the zodiac story goes,we know who will win, we just don't know how or when they will die, just before and after whom

The show spoils itself. There's no way you wont know who will win by now. All deaths has been as predictable as they could possibly be.
The rat has always been foreshadowed to win. His tagline was "Killing All" for pete's sake.

Finished it a few days ago upon the final episode's release. Got to say, I liked the lack of a clear MC as you mentioned GR. That fact alone made it on my recommendation list, and the final wish was just a cherry on the top.

I don't usually do this, but to everyone in the comments who are criticising the "don't know who will win/die" stuff in the video, pls keep in mind that:
A) video creation and editing takes time, so Arcada may not have seen and considered are of the latest episode(s) when he actually planned out the content for this video.
B) While people are noticing patterns now, no one really did in the first couple of episodes, and one could claim that it only had to kerp the veil up then in order to make a lasting impresdion to hook viewers.
C) Arcada kind of brings this up, but it is entirely possible for the show to very purposefully break pattern partway through to subvert expectations. Even if you already know the source material, it's still possible that the anime could gp with an anime-only ending. So even though a specific ending is extremely likely to occur based off of what people know, there's still a possibility for changes.
THEY DIE IN THE ORDER THEY APPEAR IN THE GODDAMN ENDING SONG THINGY
The show did start to look like it was teasing that the deaths would not go exactly in the order of the zodiac, and then veered back into it. Maybe it will turn out as nothing, but it is almost strange those clued in by primary school level knowledge should see a foregone conclusion, but knowing the author I am somewhat expecting a twist.
Don't know how it will pan out, but I was theorizing a bit that one character is not part of the 12 zodiac, but the 13th, the animal that did not get to the race because they were sleeping, an animal somewhat known for an ability for mimicry, and a connection to the character who has been sleeping. Probably just be my own fan theory now.
The other is that for the order it is strange that snake seems to be the only one killed out of it, and before the game began. Somewhat leaving actual question of the snakes fate until just recently, but the snake's episode should be next.

As soon as I found out everyone's abilities, I realized one had the plot armor under another name and that took some wind out of my sails. It is based on a LN so it's easy to be spoiled and I'm avoiding it here but most times I find spoilers to help draw in my hype but Juuni Taisen has plot armor it's saving to reveal.
Not knowing the Chinese Zodiac so well I had developed a theory after the 3rd episode that the character which gets its backstory showed will die next. Don't know if it holds
Rat had that main character vibe from the very start, and the way he looks makes him the only character that can win. The other characters just look too wild and disposable, even monkey. Years of anime experience will teach you this.
All you need to do is see the ending song....cuz so far that's the order they r dying....

I found the wish of the winner sad, but it was a wish that made sense. I mainly found it sad becouse I hoped for a different wish
Yeah, my roommate was irritated because someone told him that they've been dying in a certain order.
"Devote the entire episode to them and then kill them off" one of the main problems I have with this show. When you see someone's backstory, u know exactly what's gonna happen to them immediately after. That's not spoiling cuz Arkada said it too.

Juuni taisen is great because it tells you from the very beginning who is and isn't going to die, unlike most shows it doesn't rely on the typical question the audience has to ask themselves, or in reality.. pretend to ask themselves. Juni taisen is a show about despair and inevitability, the fights we see on the way are just tools for character development and World exploration.

You know who's going to win from episode 2. It WANTS you to know who's going to win. There are 4 different ways to achieve the same result as to who will die and who will win.
The sequence of characters die is based on the traditional sequence of twelve Chinese zodiac, so at least for me, I have already know who will win the competition. However I still think the show is quite interesting.
So far I'm pretty entertained. But since I heard very early in watching this show that the ED, and the Zodiac order spoil who's going to die in what order, I've avoided both of these to keep me guessing. Unfortunately, to many people have stated the same thing in regards to who is going to win so I guess the winner has already been spoiled.
MAN! I watched this to find out if I should risk the Dub version or stick to the Sub.
