I have used the v6 18x20 CV for a couple years. Recently, I decided to demo the v8 16x19 and Babolat Pure Aero VS. The most striking thing I encountered immediately was the solidity and comfort of the Blade when compared to the somewhat harsh feel of the VS. The Blade also gave me confidence to really swing through the ball on all of my shots and exhibited really good stability. The v8 may just be my new racquet.
Would be great to see a comparison video between the new blade 16 x19, Yonnex Vcore 98 and Babolat Pure Strike 16 x19 3rd Gen- all strung with the same string and same tension.

As I previously mentioned, you are THE most trusted reviewer on tennis gear as far as I’m concerned.
Another popular reviewer made it seem like the V8 was vastly different from the V7, which I found to be odd.
Your review, in stark contrast, was much more objective and as always, largely grounded in data.
The owner at my local tennis shop-who I really trust-pretty much shares your sentiments about this update being largely cosmetic.
The only thing that puzzles me is your comment on the stiffer feeling of the V8, because the RA is lower.
Anyhow, keep up the great work. I appreciate your honesty!
Thanks Naoki! There are tiny differences between these racquets and the V8 might feel a tad firmer (the stiffness rating doesn't tell the whole story, it can be something in the layup of the frame), but it's still arm-friendly and relatively plush.

I have a Blade v7 18x20 and I can hit with a lot of spin. In fact it's not the racket, its the user that decides how much spin to put in the ball.
If I look at your forehand and especially backhand grip there is no wonder you struggle with producing spin.
Haven't tried the V8 but I love the Blade V7. Even more than the V5 or K-Factor. Or any other racket I ever tried for that matter.

The Prince 100P has a bit more spin for an 18x20 because it's a 100sq inch so the strings are spaced out a bit.
Thanks for the great review and all the good content. Trialled a blade 16x19 and despite not getting the match results I wanted I was hitting the ball really nicely. A lot more feel and manoeuvrability with this racquet as compared with my old Head Radical MP which is a bit stiff and head heavier. Goes to show racquets are intensely personal. All about getting what works for you.
I have a head radical pro as well and despite it being the same weight (unstrung) at the Blade 98 v7, I found that the blade was much more comfortable for my arm and that I had much more control over my shots. Unfortunately I was just using the v7 as a loaner from my friend bc I broke my strings and that model is no longer available bc of how old it is. Looks like I’ll be getting a v8

I’ve been using vcore pro 97hd for 2 years, recently bought blade v8 1820 and customized it to 331 swing weight to match my 97hd. I really enjoyed the maneuverability and stability from blade, but 97hd generate heavier shot and better ball pocketing.
ball-pocketing is why HD is once in a generation racket for me, can't find anything close to it's feeling, I have 2 and want 6 total
I have the hd now and find it a tiny bit too heavy/slow especially for doubles play. Did you find the blade was a little easier to flick around on half volleys and such?
I really like the comparison you made in your review betteen V8 and V7. I have the V7 model and I really like the feeling of this racket as well as the control and precision I get with it.
I demoed the Blade yesterday 16x19 and really liked it and agree with everything you said. The control with this racket is phenomenal.
I picked up a demo of the 98 16x19 and really loved it at net in doubles. I felt like I could put the ball wherever I wanted with ease. A little lacking in power on my serve but the level of control almost makes up for it.
It came strung with ALU Power 1.25 at 52lbs. My main sticks lately have been a Clash 100L (with quite a bit of lead tape in the hoop) or a 2021 Vcore 95, both strung with Volkl Cyclone Tour 17.
I’m curious about how the v8 18 x 20 compares to the Vcore Pro 97D.

I am a pro staff player but every time I play with a blade playing tennis becomes easier! I have a one-handed backhand and I do feel the racquet need more maneuverability. If I decide to go for this racquet do you recommend adding a leather grip and some putty in the handle for more whip?

16/19 i hit pretty flat and try to finish the point fast. Some extra spin will be more beneficial I believe
@@raphaelarmandovalor6586 The Pro Staff 97 V13 is my racket of choice. The closed 16x19 string pattern is fine, especially for a onehanded backhand and a flat forehand. I try to finish the point as quick as possible, too. Serve and volley, taking the ball early on the rise and getting to the net to finish the point. The PS97 supports that playing style very much.
I used version 11! But every time I demo the blade I can feel the sweet spot getting huge!!! Without compromising much control! However, I wish it could be more maneuverable! That’s why I am asking on ways to make it closer to a pro staff by at least making it head lighter
There are alot of good racquets coming out but just bought a pair of the Yonex VCP 97 310 which is a competitor to the Blade. I played with v7 Blade 98 16 x 19 for a while and liked the feel but felt that there was lack of stability and the control.

I have the v7 Blades 16x19, but I would love to hear the v8 Blade 100 16x19 (300g) review as soon as you get it as I understand it is the new model in the Blade family. Very interested about the power and spin aspect of that 100 model, which weight is 300g.

Great review! I tried the 18x20 and it’s great. Good feel and stability. The racquet gives you what you put into it. So if you play with plenty of spin, it will spin nicely. Thoughts on ideal tension for thin poly setup ? I tried 49m47c. Seems great so far. Thanks
Nothing beats blade 2013 and 2015
would love to know where the v8 blade lines up between Yonex VCore Pro 97 and Head Extreme Tour?
I think the blade is more control oriented and has a lower stiffness: something like 62 vs 66 of the more powerful vcore and extreme tour.
I've tested all three racquets (blade was the older version though).
The new VCore Pros (purple/green) are about 60 RA average and play pretty nice. This other guy seems to be talking about the red/blue regular VCore which is stiffer and not a good comparison to the Blade. You should honestly just demo the new Blade and see what you think - the model I demoed was not softer despite the "flex" rating. Haven't tried the Extreme Tour, but most people tend to quite like that one as well. You might want to try the PK Black Ace Pro too - I'm currently using it and I love the feel.
Demoed the v7 blade recently 18x20 and it was fantastic. Super plush but great control and versatility. The review was spot on!!

Still use the 2015 Blade 18x20. Tried the v7 and it felt like mush. No power, like playing with a piece of spaghetti. Sold it pretty quick.
For me the 2015 model is an almost perfect combination of feel and power. Perhaps I could do with bit more power. I like the kblade as well but doesn’t have the feel of the 2015 blade.

@@Tennisnerd This is a great idea... if you could pull it off! I play a v4 and really really like it. Getting a bit worn now, so need to upgrade but not knowing what to go for. Seems to me v5 would be the best option, unless staying with v4 if I can find some. v6 and v7 seems to be pretty far from the v4.. but perhaps now with the v8, the choice should be easy? I've been through the K Factor, v3 and v4... but now... need something I can get my hands on without lurking around ebay for months and months... PS always played 18X20
How would you differentiate this from the pro staff 97 and what type of player should consider each? Both are control racquets, both appear to move fast (as described how v8 is a faster racquet compared to v7), low power, stable.

Also, how would you compare this to the Blade V6 without Countervail in terms of power and spin potential. And, I'm currently using a Babolat Pure Control GT (295grams unstrung) and planning on an upgrade to a heavier racket, which version of the blade would you say plays closest to Pure Control. (I ask this because I don't have the option to demo rackets at my current location)
A couple years ago I also used the Pure Control, I’m currenty using de Blade V7 18x20 and both rackets feel quite similar. Maybe the Pure Control can give you a little more power on your strokes but the Blade V7 has better feeling when you contact the ball with the strings

@@saifuddinmohammed2225 yea, you should demo the V7 before, I did the same when i switched from the V6 to the V7. At first i didn’t feel quite comfortable but now the V7 is my favorite I really like the feel it gives when you hit a good ball

Hi Jonas, great review as always. How does the V8 16x19 compare to the Pure Aero VS? I actually use a Phantom 100X 305 and I’m looking for a frame slightly more powerful, stable and that helps me better in defense too. With the Phantom I feel like I’ve to hit every ball harder and faster to be dangerous. 1HB

Love the review for this racket! I agree that Blade 98's tend to be for intermediate or advanced players. I just started playing tennis last August and literally bought a RF Pro Staff 97 tennis racket to learn tennis with. HUGE learning curve to get used to that racket but I've gotten really comfortable with it now and have gained consistency. Even though I'm still more of a beginner, I feel like I might like the Wilson Blade 98 as a good secondary racket. What's your suggestion?
I tihnk the RF97A is very tough for a learner racquet and might hinder your progress. The Blade 98 is better and enough of a challenge for someone new to the game.

Any thoughts on how the retail v8 compares to the Blade Pro H22? Especially the 16x19 versions? Not sure you tried the Blade Pro v8, but I think you played with the v7 and supposedly for the Pro v8 it was a cosmetic update only from v7.
Is the head speed a lot different?
I don’t know exactly why but i hate the feel of this racket. I’ve used the 98 16x19 and the 98S and they both felt dead to in the string bead to me.

Hi Seth, I have bought, demoed, sold, traded racquets for years. Now that I have built a decent following some manufacturers send me racquets that I usually send back. But I also use the Tennis Warehouse Euro demo service. I also tend to spend too much money on tennis racquets..but you can always re-sell and trade if you don't like it.

If the specs are the same (305,4HL=327sw) why is this version more manouverable and easier to swing???
V8 real SW strung is around 315, and V7 is 330. I know because i have a pair of both.

I think you should go for a more forgiving frame. Maybe a Blade 104 V8 or a Clash 100?
hi bro, i love your video, lately i want to try a new racquet, i play with an rf97 but i start to feel discomfort on my shoulder so i want to try a racquet with control and precision but with lees weight and stifness. Due to tennis elbow and shoulder issues in the past I'm playing Wilson Clash 100. The comfort is great, power and spin are good. But sometimes I have some control and stability issues, for example when returning big serves and also at net.
I'm thinking about switching to an armfriendly but more controlled racket with feel and still good spin potential.
What are your thoughts about prince phantom 100x (305) and this Wilson blade 98 16x19 v8? Compared to clash 100?

The clash is as predictable as the weather. Feels plush but the accuracy and consistency lets you down.

I had the Phantom 100x, Clash 100 and Blade V7 16x19 because i have arm issues, i love the Phantom 100x just added lead tape because is a bit low powered (great comfort, spin and control). The Clash 100 SUPER comfort, power, spin but the stringbed is a bit erratic, and Blade V7 16x19 low power, good spin and comfort but switch to the Blade 18x20 Fantastic Plow trough, power, control and with thin gage string (1.20mm) good spin
The Blade 98 is comfortable, so that works pretty well and gives you a lot more control. The Phantom 100x is another option if you hit with spin, while the Blade works better for flatter shots. The Clash 98 is another option with more spin potential than the Blade but more control than the 100
Can i know about your 18x20 specs? Mine has 31.2 cm and 313 sw which is considerably lower than TW specs. Can these specs changed depend on the equipment?
Hi, i bougth the 18x20 last week, but she came with weight higher than the specs (326 g x 323 g, strung). With overgrip wilson pro the weight goes to 331. Do you know why this difference?
Hi, due to a lack of quality control, this is quite common, sadly. It can be plus or minus -+ 7 grams and 0.7 cm balance points.

I love your videos. I was wondering if you have considered comparing the Blade 98 V8 and the Pro Staff RF 97 V13. I currently use the Pro Staff RF 97 V 13 which I absolutely love and can hit any shot with it and feel it suits my game well. However, as I approach 50, I have been thinking about a lighter frame. Any thoughts? I play more fast top spin not a heavy top spin with lower margins over the net and a one handed backhand. I also rely on my powerful serve, forehand and net play to set up points.
You described exactly my situation except I have a double handed backhand. I bought blade 16*19 v8 and immediately my game improved a lot.
@@James100707 so you switched from the Pro Staff RF 97 V13 to the Bade V8 16x19? I bought a blade to test with my string setup (Alu Power Rough in the Mains at 25 kg and Gut in the Crosses at 24 kg). Will test it with my coach on Thursday. But was able to outhit my opponent in a league match with my pro Staff RF 97 and I have no arm issues ... was just a thought of switching since I am approaching 50. I do go to the gym at least 3 times a week for weight training and 1 for light regenerative cardio 45 minutes.
@@hanseat7950 You seem fit to use RF for at least 5 more years. You can also add weight to Blade and try it. In stock form it is too light for you. Blade has some other qualities that you may like.
@@James100707 OK I will try the blade in stock form first and see how it does. We start the clay season here soon so maybe a lighter racquet will be better when playing long gruelling matches on the red clay.
I’m 54 and played with the RF97 until 6 months ago. As much as I love that racquet I was starting to be a bit late with it. I was just a fraction of a second too slow bringing the racquet around, especially on the run. Been using the Blade v8 16x19 for a few months now. It’s a good racquet. Lots of feel and control. Good at the net. Arm friendly and manoeuvrable. Nothing will match the solid plow through of the RF but the Blade is solid and won’t get pushed around. I’m keeping it for now but I do plan on moving to a 100 or 104 size head and about 300g unstrung. The Blade will be familiar enough to you if you are used to the Pro Staff line. I really miss my RF though.
What tension would you suggest to open pocketing on the 18x20?

Does the new v8 grip/buttcap feel different compared to the v7? Is the buttcap more flared?
Great question, I noticed Wilson has been changing their butt cap. I think the circumference at the end of the butt cap is the same. However v7 is more like a "bump" at the end of the racket, while V8 seems to have a smoother transition from the handle to the end of the cap.
I would say they feel pretty similar, with a forehand grip V8 might feel slightly slimmer in your ring finger area because of the more gradual transition, but pinky area is the same

How about the 100L and the 101L, for us who don't wanna go down on the head size? How would you modify them?
I would try them in stock form first, but if they feel light, I'd add my usual treatment of 2g at 12 o'clock and see how that feels (maybe counterbalance in the handle). And if you feel like the swing weight is okay, but you want more weight to the frame, you can add a couple of grams more in the throat of the frame.

Two things: Tsitsipas isn’t a flat hitter - actually hits his BH w too much top making some land short and get attacked. And you should hit more BHs - and try to shorten the length a little bit.
I thought I heard him say Tsitsipas was a spin hitter and Goffin was a flatter hitter?
@@Mewborne89 earlier he said Tsitsipas hit flat. He really shouldn’t talk about pros - they create power and spin with their great strokes, not racquets.
@@WestCoastAce27 I rewatched the video and all he said about Tsitsipas was he played with a lot of spin, rewatch it. It’s around 7 minutes. He knows a lot about racquets and pros. If anyone should be allowed to talk about pros, it’s him. There are a ton of pros who use certain racquets for more power or spin or whatever else. Strokes can only be so good. If everyone’s strokes were so good why don’t they all use the same racquets? It’s because they all have certain needs with their game. Some need power, some need spin, some need control, etc. You’re telling me if a pro could improve with power or control or whatever else because of a racquet or string they wouldn’t use every advantage they could? Of course they would! Their strokes are amazing for the most part, but equipment plays a HUGE role in their games. Why do you think Fed used a Prostaff and not a Pure Aero? Why isn’t Nadal using a Prostaff? Because they have different needs. I rest my case. Different frames help in different areas. Hence the reason all pros use different equipment.

I'm a 3.5 player. Getting coached and playing around 8-9 hours a week. I've only ever used the blade 98 (16x19) v7 and v8 since I started playing tennis but like you said, if I don't have perfect footwork, it's hard to get a good deep shot. I feel like I can play with another stick that's easier to play with and more forgiving (more easy power, maybe 100sq inch). Would like to get your thoughts and if you have any recommendations? I'm considering the ezone, vcore, and the pro staff six.one (though tough to get in North America). Thanks my man, and keep up the great work!

Nothing can beat Blade BLX 98 v5 2015 Release. To me V7 is muted, too soft, no Pop. It's a solid racquet, stable, increase sweetspot, more power racquet once I Modified add more weight at 3 and 9 and in handle. I bought in 2019 when they first came out. Still use and like it but I prefer the old version BLX v5. I Have played for 4 years now. It's Better than V6 with Countervail which is totally DEAD Feel for sure and of course not better than V5 Blade BLX. I never tried V8 but I'm sure it's pretty similar to V7 but slightly improvement like TennisNerd said. I Don't care about cosmetic, I don't buy a racket cause the Design look cool and Modern look.

It's more towards V5, but still pretty plush so somewhere in between V5 and V7.

It seems relatively open, yes.
When you discuss string spacing and ask your viewers to look at the racquets then you should probably change to the larger view rather than the smaller corner window. We don’t always watch your channel using a 24+ inch monitor - sometimes we use mobiles 🤣🎾🤓

I'm deciding between the Blade 16x19 and Pure Strike 98 16x19. I'm about a 4.0 with a good forehand which I hit with a decent amount of top spin. I have a 1 handed back hand which is a little inconsistent, but I have a very good slice on that side.
I'm sort of between an offensive player and a counter puncher.
I feel like the Pure Strike is a great fit - but concerns about Babolat induced tennis elbow concerns me.
I was wondering what you think would be a better racket for me?
For references I am currently using an old Wilson Tour 95 BLX (the Justin Henin racket). I need something a little heavier though and a update in general.
im a similar player and went through same decision, with similar low level elbow concerns. Liked the pure strike, and went with that at first but have recently changed (due to arm issues) to blade counter veil. Which took a minute to gell with but now I love. The pure strike and v7 were a bit too head heavy for me my single handed backhand, felt great when it worked but made it more prone to break down. this new version seems like a pretty good stick for single handed backhand imho.
pure strike will almost definitely give you arm issues unless you're insanely fit
Radical 360+ mp vs Blade v8 16x19? What's your thoughts?
I play the 360+ MP and I feel that the blade is definitely less comfortable. More solid feel though, less spin, similar power potential but you have to work harder with the blade. Similar in stability, serves I prefer the blade. Also prefer the handle of the blade with the one piece design.

I prefer the plusher feel of the Blade and I'm playing better with that one

Apparently, Tsitsipas uses the very old version of the blade. But I can't remember where I heard about it
Hardly any pros change rackets from the rackets the grew up with. Therefore, very few use new rackets. Switching to new rackets would force dramatic adjustments to their game. Remember, tennis is all feel.
As a result, sponsored pros simply have their rackets painted to look like the new models they were hired to market.
They stiffened the layup of the hoop which seems very fashionable these days at the cost of my sensitive elbow. Huge Pass from me.

It's a little bit stiffer but still comfortable, the 16x19 with some weight is a nice stick
I've demoed both recently, v7 definitely felt way softer to me
