    Awesome video, Lyn 😊 It's always a battle against the beasties. I've found the horticultural soap and isopropyl alcohol mixed together works great against the spider mites, it certainly put a big dent in the population I had in the grow tent. Thank you for sharing with us as always, Lyn. Have a lovely evening from Edith & myself to you and Hans ❤️🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜

    I like your demonstration on how you use the diatamaceous earth. I always avoided because I thought it's just a big mess all over the place but that makes a lot of sense just tapping a bit of powder on the plant and surfaces around the plant just a little bit. I bet a person could even use a big makeup brush and easily dust the rims of pots to help pretend pests ever walking from pot to pot if pots are close to each other. That's a really cool easy concept for all houseplants.

      So happy you loved the Diatomaceous earth demonstration, the Diatomaceous earth really works well at keeping the pests down, and a big powder puff make up brush is perfect for dusting the powder over the plants and rims of the pot, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful new week XXXX

    Great video, Lyn! Because of you, I use 99% rubbing alcohol on all of my plants. Learned this tip from you about 2 years prior, and never looked back. I’ve got my nursery using it, too. It’s brilliant, and hasn’t caused any problems with any of our plants 👍🏽👍🏽. Sending you and Hans love and plant power from CA to the Emerald Isle!

    My experience is that Neem oil kills crassula jade and portucaria afra....😮 I use straight isopropyl alcohol instead of rubbing alcohol..rubbing alcohol tends to have additives and oils that can suffocate leaves. 2 parts water and 1 part isopropyl alcohol and 4-5 drops of dishwashing liquid in a quart spray bottle is my preferred method

    Good timing as I'm spraying a few plants. Do you see water stains or mottled skins on cacti, especially young columnars, with isopropyl or neem or systemics? Do you spray each pot one by one or regular mass spraying in the greenhouse? Yes, ventilation is important. Thanks Lyn!❤

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 місяців тому

      so happy that this video was good timing for you James and that you are spraying a few plants now too, I do notice the Neem oil can sometimes stain some of the Echeverias that have the powdery 'hue' on their leaves but not the cacti or other succulents, I find the isopropyl alcohol doesn't stain the cacti but I do dilute the alcohol with 30% water when spraying the Echeverias as I have noticed in the past the isopropyl alcohol can remove or stain the lovely 'hue' on their leaves if I use it neat, I mass spray all the plants in the greenhouse with a big hozelock water pump sprayer, thanks so much James for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful new week XXXX

    I bought a monstroose on discount and it had so much scale. I have treated with alcahol and neem oil. Using brush to get in crevices. Will keep eye out in a week to do another round and ck I did not miss anything. Cacti scale look very different than other types of scale. Why don’t they move? They look more like dead skeletal remains. How can you tell they’re alive?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 місяців тому

      Hi Josie :-D so sorry to hear about your monstrose cactus, scale is such a pain to get rid off especially on monstose cacti that have a lot of crevices, Scale stay stationary on the cactus skin and live in their small hard outer shell and suck on the plants tissues, they look like they are dead as their scales are like little dried bumps, the good news is if you are using the alcohol and the neem you are doing everything right to get rid of these annoying little 'beasties' thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX

      So happy you love the methods Vera, I always find it a bit of a dilemma dealing with pests on our plants especially as a Vegan and hate the thought of killing them, I spend hours picking off slugs and snails off the plants and putting them into the fields to save them haha, but with spider mites and mealybugs its tough and the rubbing alcohol, neem oil and diatomaceous earth are the most humane ways, thanks so much Vera for your wonderful Friendship and amazing comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Italy for a wonderful new week XXXX

Imagine that I have read recently that there are some kinds of mites that like humid weather, they are called flat mites. Milan is really humid and some of my plants have got them. Off topic question, you mention how your humidity stays too high in the winter , how high is too high?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 місяців тому +1

      So happy you loved the video Barbie :-D our humidity in Ireland is around 70% and on a sunny winter day it can raise about 95% inside the polytunnel, I open up the door and it helps to bring down the humidity to 70%, ideally cacti love to have low humidity 50% or lower, but they can take much higher humidity e.g 80% if they are totally dry in their pots during the winter, if the humidity is higher than 80% its too high if the temperatures are very very cold, but most cacti can take even 90% humidity as long as they are dry over winter and can have air circulation via a fan or window or door open to ventilate every couple of days, thanks so much Barbie for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic new week XXXX
