Great storyline, captures really well the rampant homophobia in the 80s

why would women be afraid of gay people it's not like they are going to get a thing up their wotsit when they aren't expecting it, or is it the gaids thing!? Live and let live I say.

Not bonkers rubbish. There were still a lot of misconceptions around AIDS in 1986 and that's why the storyline was ran.

@rosebankross Didn't know that - thanks. Talking of East Enders that's something else Mr Rusty is wrong about. True - that as Mark's storyline evolved so did the attitudes of the characters but initially there were people in the Fowler home refusing to share cutlery.

I remember seeing some of the series around this time in the 1980s-thank you for the memories anyway. It is a lot better in comparison to today's soaps-really all of them too on whatever channel.
I remember after the Collins family left Brookside after actor Doreen Sloane died alas, Jim Wiggins was in an episode of The Bill-I remember seeing his name in the Radio Times. Sadly he too died later on though. Thank you anyway!!

shouldn't it be called Cocophobic because let's face that's what we blokes have to fear isn't it! Live and let live I say.

Jim Wiggins wasn't gay! He was actually happily married twice resulting in 3 children a son & two daughters. He was quite a vain & confident man in real life. I only know this as I'm good friends with one of the director/producers & I asked him! 🙂

@@pamib29 Apologies if this was the case. It must have been incorrectly mentioned in the media back in the day.

The actor that plays Gordon here is the one I remember. Brookie was always swapping actors for charachters. Katy Rogers had to be the worst charachter for that. She would pop to the shops and come back a new actress. After a while they settled for the one actress but to begin with she was always changing actresses every other episoode

Blimey, the ignorance about in the 80's was off the scale. I thought it could be bad now, but it's actually progressive these days compared to back then!

Ridiculous. Brookside soapboxing again. When my best mate came out as gay in 1986 nobody thought he was an immediate risk. EastEnders did the same with Mark in the 1990s. Bonkers rubbish.
