Thank you! I think you might be the only youtuber I follow. Your videos on primer and on have helped me out so much. I followed your advice and called about the kit and it's great. I'm a fan for life. How you present information and communicate is practical and direct with accessible instructions. I have learned alot and done alot with you via youtube. 14:18
Mike I'm sure you know this but for folks that don't: You can use a dial indicator to set the play for the wheel bearing nuts. The tolerances are in the Bentley manual(s)
Great video, I really want to do a disc brake conversion. I put my races in the freezer ( cuz I have carpal tunnel & it makes installation easier). I use a bearing packer cuz im lazy & have one ( Lisle makes a cheap good one). My drum brakes have made me want to change my pants more than once in heavy traffic!
G'day Mike, Kevin here from Australia. I've used the AC Industries brake kit on my 63 beetle and where they are a great set up the brake lines supplied are too short . But great video. ✌ Peace
@@Mikefngarage My spindle has a spacer that gives it the lip for the grease seal on the inner bearing to seal against. it is a removable spacer. I see your spindle might have it on there as well, and want to make sure to keep it on. I'm just checking prior to slipping the disc onto the spindle.
Watch all the castings some stuff needs some fitting but Mine stopps so great was driving it today and no worries about if I could stop in time. stops on a dime. and NO offset difference.14 inch wheels fit great.
Well, that bus looks like 1968 or 1969 and thats the year beam I have under my split bus however Im running 73 up spindles and stock 73 up brakes. Not sure this kit would fit. Also looked on that posted website and I dont see the kit. Stock rotors seem to get hot fairly quickly due to no venting. Only question is how much do replacement rotors cost?

I have the stock 14's on my van and this kit fits. I haven't really put them under much stress yet. Everything fit with no issues.
@@patrickmclaughlin6013 OK. Good to know. I've ordered a few things from CIP1. I've been pleased so far with everything I've bought except for the locking gas cap which doesn't function any better than the non-locking cap. My son might be inheriting the bus for his drive to school and I thought I would upgrade the braking first before allowing a teenager to drive it. Or, is it just crazy to allow a teenager to drive an old bus?
@@kenmoyer9704 my 2 cents I did not like the front drum brakes at all. I had them 'fade' going down a mountain drive, go out in deep water, pulse the peddle, leak, ... I haven't been running the disk kit long enough to say it's way better, I do like so far. One thing about the retro kits, you don't get is the brake booster. I think it takes a little more leg to get the same stopping over the drum set up.
Unfortunately, with early bays, the stock one is the only choice I'm aware of to date, and discs require more pedal pressure to do the same job. I've thought about figuring out some bell crank apparatus as a force-multiplier for the brake pedal, but it's one of those "one-of-these-days" projects....
I got the Empi kit as well, and regret it - the wheel bearings came in a bag with all the hardware, and looked pretty junky, so I swapped out my existing drum set (thankfully interchangable). Also, my '70 kit had a later-model master, not my 1-year '70 master. The Chinese masters are junk, anyway, so I pulled my old German master out of my spares and found an NOS German rebuild kit!!! Rebuilt it, and it's working like a charm. But I feel quite ripped off by EMPI. I would have returned it, but I was past the return date. So far, so good, though. I'm a bit concerned about the solid discs holding up, though.

You only need to bleed the top one.
The caliper can be used on either side. It's universal.
That's the only reason it has 2 bleeder valves.

Great video Mike. I'd like to do this to Rusty some day!
Great brake discs Mike, Nice instruction video for guys who will change of there brake discs.HCS
Disc brakes are a great upgrade, no matter the bus. Great video
Nice one Mike, I would really love to have your climate it's really cold on the knees this time of year lols

Without a booster, you'll still need to use a lot of pedal pressure. I found that on my '70.

Disc brakes are the best!
Nice job Mike - not afraid to get grease on your hands - Happy Easter :)
AC Industries kits are great!
Great video. Is there a link to the kit. I may have missed it. Does this work with stock spindles?
This baywindow, the bucket truck, and the white car. What do you do in your spare time? I really enjoy the videos.
Don't forget to change to install a 2lb residual valve for the disc circuit.
MIKE, what did you do for the new brake master with the screw top? Did you make an access hole in the floor?
The kits for the bay windows dont come with the reservoir. you use your existing one with the existing hoses. under the dash.

Go Mike go. 👍👍😎😎😎
Did he mention anywhere if these were front or rear brakes, which kit this was and year of the van?
would love to have this kit since the rotors are vented

I have the empi lowered spindles. Can I use these on those spindles? I wouldn’t mind keeping the wide five bolt pattern on my 69 bus

dont think it would designed for 65 to 70. spindles. if you could find a set of spindles would be nice to run stock 14s
@@Mikefngarage I dont even remember what spindles I have on it now, I might even have the drum spindles still because the beam was 68 or 69.
gezz wish this was a year ago, I got the CPS kit

will that kit fit with the stock 14's ?
Yep, wide 5s otherwise people would just be putting a 71 setup on the early bay.
What break brand did you use?
Nice!
Will that kit work with 14" wheels?
yes. that is the coolest thing about these kits. they do have their set of issues but stock offset and stock wheels bolt right on.
Thanks for the info!
Do you recommend loading up the wheel bearing caps with grease too? I've seen some video's of that being done.
not really necessary just the way I do it is fine.

i want to order this brake kits for one of our client, can you please tell me where i found it to order online..?
Im not impressed with the stock 1973 up disc brakes... I wonder if these work better due to vented and floating calipers

@@87mini my EMPI disks pull to one side, I fixed this by slotting the pads on the side that was grabbing. Relay is junk.
Brake line looks a bit short
Don't forget the bus is on stands with the wheels off, will be long enough on the ground with the wheels on.
I'd say the same, stands or not it's a inch or two short.
I can assist. I'm off Sundays and Mondays:)
