"Thrill" is their first MV. It came out in 2014. The band formed in 2013. Their first show had like around 10 people. Half of them were their friends and with tickets that the members bought for. Yeah. They were having a tough time getting a good traction. "Thrill" was their last ditch effort. When the song came out, they were almost at calling it quits. Almost. Then, one western listener saw the MV on YT, liked it so much he linked it in his Facebook group (music related). And it blew up. The YT MV got so many views over night, the band members thought it was some kind of hacking. Then, they realized most of the views were coming from overseas. So, they decided to stay together and try to expand overseas. We have to thank that person who put "Thrill" MV to that fateful Facebook channel. This band is really special. - oh, and this MV is the only MV where you will see MISA (bass) with skirt with short hemline. HAHAHA
Miku's secondary vocals are always, always satisfying! And just integral to the Band-Maid sound. Her lead vocal songs are pretty cool as well. She is the main lyricist on almost all their self written songs. What I find totally amazing is how she can write lyrics, both in Japanese and English that fit so perfectly in the music. I know that much of that happening comes from Saiki and Miku's working together to make it right. They seem to really know each others strengths at vocals and how they can combine those strengths into something more than if they were each singing alone. It was nice that you caught and shouted out the vocals on "Different". With a song so packed with musical virtuosity, the vocals get overlooked, but they are pretty spectacular.
Thrill was their first music video on youtube in 2014. They were not writing their tune then so there's that. This video put them on the map and got people listening. The little hat Akane (drummer) is wearing was MISA's (Bass). She thought it was silly and didn't want to wear it so since her and Akane are such good friends, Akane took it and wore it I believe until 2019. And as you can see later Saiki (lead singer) and MISA didn't like the "traditional" maid outfits and chose the longer more flowing gown type outfits. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I don't necessarily miss Misa and Saiki wearing the maid outfits, but I do miss the short skirts especially on Kanami. BAND-MAID the hardest rocking band in the world right now!
Akane has disposed of her little hat somewhere in the middle of 2018, I believe, when they have switched to the new costumes with the start of new BAND-MAID era. You can see Akane still with her hat at ZEPP Toky on Aptil 13, 2018, and already during the US/European tour at the end of 2018 she was bare-headed. I think actually one of the reasons Akane wanted to get rid of the hat is that it was probably not easy to wear it for two hours straight during the live shows. It had to be attached really tightly to her head, not to fall off, and I imagine that her head was probably itching like hell in the aftermath of each concert.
The riff from Thrill is fire. Thrill saved them, they were seriously thinking of disbanding at that point 6 years ago, but they uploaded it and it went viral and made them famous, relative to what they were anyway.
Great old versus new comparison. I think Mikku didn't even know how to play the guitar in Thrill, she's just holding it as a prop in that video. Now she's awesome!
A very interesting choice. With 'Different' you have chosen their most recent and with 'Thrill' their first video, which brought them attention 7 years ago. That also explains why the video for 'Thrill' seems rather 'simple'. At that time, the band's founder Miku Kobato (2nd voice, rhythm guitar) had just started learning to play guitar after she decided to step back from the position as lead vocalist and brought in Saiki Atsumi for this position. And as a teacher she made the best choice, because this was/is none other than lead guitarist Kanami Tōno. By the way, the flowers in the hair of the two singers represent their personalities and, as far as I know, stand for the beings of the 'Oni', which come from Japanese mythology. I am anything but well versed in it, but afaik the red Oni (Miku) is supposed to stand for charm, intelligence and fun-loving/wild, while the blue Oni (Saiki) stands for innocence, elegance and sometimes introverted. Greetings from a German Band-Maid fan!
Get ready for new BM releases. These few weeks from their new album release, leading upto the end of feb when they’ll play Budokan are gonna be busy and exciting for BM fans.
Also, Different was made 2 years ago specifically for the intro of an Anime (Log Horizon season 3). So this song is a single not to be included in their upcoming album.
Everybody will comment on this, but is it really a coincidence you chose their very latest followed by their very first? In any case, enjoyed the double reaction. As to the dual vocal, that's the stuff of Band Maid legend. Miku (rhythm guitar, vocal) founded the band and initially intended to sing lead. But after a few rehearsals, she decided her voice wasn't powerful for hard rock, so she brought Saiki on board. Thus the great harmonic blend of Saiki and Miku was born and has been an integral part of their sound ever since.
''Different' is one of their latest tunes. It was made for an Anime Theme Song. 'Thrill' was their very first Music Video from years ago. This was before they wrote their own songs. But it set the tone for the BAND-MAID Sound. Once they found that they were off and running. Miku had always envisioned Dual Vocals. And she knew almost from the beginning that her voice wasn't heavy enough for Hard Rock. So she had Kanami teach her rhythm guitar and demoted herself to backing vocalist and started looking around for a lead singer. They didn't look far. They found Saiki at their agency. But they didn't want to scare her off with the Maid Uniforms right away. So they just told her they would be playing Hard Rock and wearing "Cute Clothes".
Different is fast paced and it's different from most of their popular songs. It's too chaotic for some and it takes a few times listening to it to be fully immersed and comprehend this masterpiece. There's just so much going on musically and it's very technical. On the other hand, "Thrill" was their first MV video that has now amassed over 14M views. During that time Miku, the rhythm guitar/vocals, didn't even knew how to play the guitar. She was just using it as a prop. She has come a long way and now able to play technically as you can see in "Different". It's always nice to see one Band-Maid reaction, but it's a lot better to see two reaction at the time. Good job.
a lot of the older videos are kind of getting you used to their skills. in the interview about this new single "Different", Kanami(lead shredder extraordinaire) & composer said they actually wanted to go faster, but pulled it back to this speed so they could be more accurate. ;) LOVED THIS SONG LIVE!! In regards to Thrill: Miku usually handles the higher registers of the singing. Saiki's natural tone is great. Miku is still air guitaring & doing mainly back vocals at this point, she starts getting a lot better when she becomes the band's rhythm guitarist(the sound gets even better). Kanami is using her Addictone guitar at this point, the PRS comes later. unfortunately the Thrill LIVE, its a bit hard to find(they dont play it often/at every concert). ;) having said that, they do have an "unplugged" version from back when they had to self promote to bring fans to their smaller live events. that version is still VERY good imho. their new album coming out(in less than 10 days) is going to be GREAT!! the teaser> ua-cam.com/video/DNqzqhYWNpc/v-deo.html
Great reaction 😻👍 Different is fast but it seems there's a song from the upcoming album Unseen World releasing on the 20th of this month that's said to be the fastest they've ever done. They've posted a teaser video of the songs from the upcoming album on their official UA-cam channel. Thrill was the very first MV they released whereas Different is their latest and I 💖 them both~Po! 🕊️
So funny... I was laughing when he selected both MV. I said Awesome their first(2014) and their latest(2020) for the perfect contrast. When he started with Different.. I yelled nooooooo. Read the freaking release date.😄
Fyi, Jimmy Page (Led Zappelin) watch this band live in Tokyo and saw this drummer and went to the back stage to take photo with her and said she's the best drummer he ever seen after the late John Bonham...
Thrill, Dice, Play. The trilogy of MVs that introduced me to Band-Maid and made me fall in love with their music. and as I've maybe said in another comment on yours and others other than Judas Priest they are my most favorite current fresh new band. They saved music for me. To be fair my daughter had introduced me to BABYMETAL and from there I discovered Band-Maid, Lovebites, Aldious and all the others great bands coming from Japan. and retirement is a happy place now.
I think I read somewhere that Akane was banging those drums around 200 beats per minute on DIFFERENT. THRILL was written for them. Their labels would not allow them to do original compositions. It wasn't until 2016,after changing labels, that their original songs were recorded. They wrote DIFFERENT.
I'm always compelled to say what someone else pointed out...chorus melody of 'Thrill' is like MJ's 'Thriller'...and I think that's cool AF. They didn't write it...but they should be proud to have recorded it!! I believe 'Alone' was the first song they wrote that got their record company backing. It's great...check the MV Mr Gnome. What can I say about 'Different'...listen over and over. It's mind-expanding...sonic herb :-)
They say the band might have broken up if the staff of the Web radio station "Jrock Radio" hadn't happened upon the song "thrill" and introduced it to the world on Facebook. Rock fans outside of Japan responded to the song and saved Band-Maid from the edge of a cliff.
Band Maid adds more layers of sound than any hard rock band I've ever heard. ahhh Thrill the song that hooked me. I don't care who wrote the lyrics, these girls made it their own. I like the deceptively simple but stylish video. If you can find it (has link), check out their song Take Me Higher (live). It's one of their best!
As you are now aware, Thill was their first MV and Different is their latest MV. And as you have probably been told, everything in between is "golden"... and it is. The thing is that every time I hear Thrill... (as Happy Gilmore say's)... I'm always at my happy place. ; ) As for the reactions - Coincidental?,?, yet very cool
I swear to you, I just picked the two shortest songs because it was a double reaction. I had no clue. Happy coincidence. I did read a comment that I should have started with the second vid because it was the earliest. But again, I had no idea yet it worked.
"I want to hear that drum kick again". Well, if you look closely, Akane "Gorilla" bring her right arm over her left shoulder to kick the cymbal with maximum impact (in the original vidéo, you can clearly view this move around 1'09''). If this was a baseball match, she'd do a homerun! :-)
Their first and their last video. Perfect. I correct that...wrong order! ;) This old songs live...dream on....seems they are practically banned... :( I think there is only some bad recording around. This song made them famous and should be played all gigs. Its should be what Overkill is to Motorhead
That was pretty cool seeing old and new! Thanks for the reaction!

God, that must have been a crazy morning for them. Well earned.
New and had no idea. So thankful for them to still be rocking.
On the virtues of piracy... 😂

Bookends of the first and the latest from Band-Maid! How much these ladies have just gotten better is apparent watching them back to back! Awesome!
''Different' is one of their latest tunes. It was made for an Anime Theme Song. 'Thrill' was their very first Music Video from years ago. This was before they wrote their own songs.
