I remember being made fun of for wearing braids, hoop earrings, wigs, and sew in weaves. I was experimenting with different hair styles because I was bored with my hair. It wasn’t just white people who bullied me. Black people made fun of me as well and even said I wore weave because I’m trying to be white. I was also bullied for my dark skin. Now 10 years later, what I was bullied for is now in style.

This is so true. I'm a licensed nail tech and can't be more surprised that bold colorful designs, length, and bling has become more popular outside the black and latinas community, when a few years ago normal french tips was the standard and anything else was "ratchet", "impractical, over the top", and "ugly".

Black culture is the new pop culture fr. I’ve watched a ton of video essays on how this happened and it’s interesting and strange. As a white person who loves street style I get it but also people tend to take things too far (appropriate) and don’t give credit where credit is due. it’s a very weird time to be alive.

the video helped me realize the extent of appropriation of black culture by the kardashians and it makes me more furious than ever about when black women were getting mocked, ridiculed and disrespected for this lifestyle (more early 2010s) on social media, the kardashians were using this to enter "high fashion" and then were regarded as icons for "inventing" and influencing a new fashion style. and their lack of acknowledgement and understanding even today is so disheartening.

Growing up and realizing in hindsight how black femininity was always denied for me. I was raised by my black father into white respectability. Even as a teenager hed hold me down to cut my nails down when they got too long to avoid being “ghetto” or having “witchy poo nails”. He took my eyebrow scissors and tweezers and i had my hair relaxed for as long as i can remember. Also was discouraged from wearing any jewelry that was too flashy. Now that I’m older I’m glad i can embrace these things and in a way take control of my own body and identity

Watching this as a Brit IMO it's interesting to hear your take on this as a lot of this is what would be considered 'chavvy' and 'tacky' in the UK and more of a class issue than a race issue. Chavs are typically white working class individuals (however rich people, even celebs who act like this are considered chavvy as well) who are on benefits and live in a council house, behave uncouthly and have a lot of (probably fake or nicked) designer items such as clothing and bags. The women typically have acrylics and excessive makeup/eyelashes/badly filled lips.

Mary J didn’t even dress similar to Saweetie back in the day. Maybe some of the hairdos but that’s about it. Mary dressed in baggy clothes and had a tomboy type swag when she first came out. Then eventually she was styled by Misa Hylton. Misa had a very monochromatic or sometimes matchy style of dressing people. Saweetie doesn’t really give that. Mary wouldn’t even be comfortable in a lot of stuff Saweetie wears because she doesn’t like showing a lot of skin. The usage of "Ghetto" even 300 years later is sad as it shows both the common conditions we create that cause ghettos as well as the normalization of racist city building.

i feel like you should have discussed more abt how this impacts dark skin nonmen (colorism). as well as how have they contributed in the ghetto fabulous aesthetic, same with Black lgbt+. the examples that you gave were of light skin women and a culture vulture. (just a critic and an observation)

I'm not a native english speaker so AAVE wasn't thought at school to me and growing up without that much internet access or even a smartphone I'd only see this language in movies and it would be heavily portrait as unintelligent or wrong. Only last year I discovered it's like regionalism in Brazil. Thus depends of where you live and how was your upbringing (in cultural sense) and it's not wrong at all. 🤯 #themoreyouknow

I just don’t get people. I don’t get why we can’t appreciate and enjoy that poc have brought so much culture, fashion, ideas and knowledge to the world and should be giving credit and adored for sharing the knowledge
You can’t get long nails but call black girls with long nails ghetto. It makes zero sense to me. I don’t understand why people have to hate so much and put people down for shit we all participate in and love and enjoy. I went to a racist school and have had people try to force me to say the n word and got jumped by drunk 40 year old men with my baby daddy and had to watch my family shit talk my beautiful daughter all because of skin. It makes no sense and makes me want to cry and I’m Hispanic i don’t even face no where as much racism as my daughter will or my friends have had :(

AAVE is what's called a dialect at the very least in other languages but xenophobic and incurious people.
Racism is a pillar of classism, that like all isms allow poor workers in a predominant group to feel like owners. This is done by these workers partaking in gatekeeping and subjugation of an underclass they benefit from existing, however marginally. It also serves to obfuscate the class struggle for the beneficiaries and to divide the energies of those effected both by classism and the racism that buttresses it.
