- Underground settings are becoming increasingly relevant to global security and safety. Rising populations and urbanization are requiring military and civilian first responders to perform their duties below ground in human-made tunnels, underground urban spaces, and natural cave networks. Recognizing that innovative, enhanced technologies could accelerate development of critical lifesaving capabilities, DARPA today announced its newest Grand Challenge: the DARPA Subterranean Challenge, or SubT for short. We've had a few recent conflict in which the theater of combat included tunneling adversaries. I look forward to hearing about the cool ones, and not hearing about the coolest ones.
The team which has an automated drone to scan, map & analyze the underground areas will win each event by a huge margin. I think a good starting point for the drones payload would comprise of real-time data from a HD camera, FLIR unit, 3-D laser scanners (same type used by LEO's for crime scene mapping ) & sound wave radar to analyze surface consistency / density. And if they really wanted to be lazy; write an algorithm to process all the data & pick the route for the team. This actually sounds like a lot of fun. I hope you guys do an in-depth follow up video of the contest.

Pretty cool. I remember there used to be a competition similar to this one. The goal was to develop autonomous systems in order to search for victims under rubble.

I totally agree, especially considering getting rid of terrorists is like trying to get rid of gophers on the ranch. Get one and they just keep popping up everywhere! This is a wise contest.

Can we use NK as a train place for cracking ? Is not my field but I saw out there servers dedicated to people train their skills, why not just give their addresses ? Hope people don't miss understand, I love toy's but I hate when people use them to grind other fellow humans.
