Thanks for covering this one Kram. One of my favorite groups. Kazu is an otherworldly vocalist.

Might make my top 10 this year it's 4 stars for me

It’s nice to see an unconventional album get covered on TLM for a change. Blonde Redhead have never been a personal favorite of mine, but they have released some good songs here and there. I added the folky “Not for Me” to my ongoing 2023 300-song playlist.

Also, the must-listens on my calendar for the rest of 2023. Obviously, there will be hundreds of albums released in the final 3 months of the year, but these are the only ones that I am legitimately anticipating:
Geese - 4D Country EP (Oct 13; their album 3D Country is still my top candidate for AOTY, and this will take EP of the year if the material is even remotely in the same league)
The Mountain Goats - Jenny from Thebes (Oct 27; John Darnielle releases his 22nd album; he is such a compelling lyricist that I always check out whatever he releases, even if not all of their albums have been absolute winners)
Marnie Stern - The Comeback Kid (Nov 3; one of the best math rockers in the last 20 years - this is her first album in a decade)
Aesop Rock - Integrated Tech Solutions (Nov 10; one of the most compelling voices in hip hop)
Panopticon - The Rime of Memory (Nov 27; one of the most consistent and imaginative black metal projects out there)
There’s also new stuff due in 2023 by the likes of Clowns, The Gaslight Anthem, Tkay Maidza, Jane Remover, CHAI, Kristin Hayter, Scream, Cable Ties, L’Rain, and Hiss Golden Messenger. I will get around to hearing those at some point too.

Fake Can Be Just as Good is still my favorite album. I got it the day before I heard them live for the first time. They really impressed me with how much they sounded like the recording when they played live. These last few albums that seem to not be as popular for them are actually among my favorites. I look forward to hearing them live for the fourth time tonight.

A very overlooked band. When they are on top of their game they are amazing. ‘Elephant Woman’ is the one of greatest Art/ Alt rock tracks of all time. Looking forward to hearing this one.

I saw Blonde Redhead open for Interpol on the Antics tour. The pretty colored stage lights and strong cocktails did little to persuade me into enjoying their set. I’m more open to exploring this band’s sound now. I have to admit that I didn’t enjoy Kazu’s vocals in a live setting, but that was nearly 20 years ago.
I respect the longevity of this band and I think I’ll give this album a listen and a fair shake. Thanks for the review, K!

I think it's a very good album, love especially first 4 tracks. Thanks Kramzer for introducing them to me in the album of the year series, now Misery Is a Butterfly is one of my favourite albums of all time. Really appreciate that!

Just picked this up a few days ago on vinyl, but haven’t had it on the turntable yet. I’m a pretty big fan of the band and agree that I didn’t get into the 2 albums prior to this. I will say that Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons is probably my favorite album of theirs, and I would push new listeners that direction followed by Misery Is a Butterfly and 23. Though I do also enjoy their earlier (noisier) albums as well. They are always interesting and one of those bands that I always seem to keep coming back to their albums for more.

I haven't heard all their albums but of what I have heard I would say that you're right that this is probably the most accessible sounding album. I thought it was a nice sounding album but I didn't connect to many of the songs. Although since listening to it Tidal keeps pushing "Sit Down For Dinner Pt.2" on me and that song has grown on me quite a bit. I've got the album at 3 stars for now.
I really love Misery is a Butterfly which I originally checked out because of the AOTY series. I also like Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and 23 quite a bit too.

I think it’s very melancholy if you really listen to the lyrics. It gives a real resignation vibe. 4.6/5 for me.

I'm on the same page, previous two albums left me cold. Now I know how to spend my Sunday evening.
P.S.: nice album, a bit too mellow and dreamy for my taste. I miss the edgy guitar sound of their best work, it'd have fitted well. But hey, they have the right to change, and some of the new elements that they introduced are cool. Solid 3,5

I gotta give it a spin...after being disappointed with their post-23 output I kinda gave up on them. Now I got curious.
