"Ballad of Fallen Angels" is one of the greatest episodes not just of Cowboy Bebop, but of anime in general. The theme, the central conflict we catch glimpses of, the score, everything. It all works very well.
So awesome to see you all react to this series, it's one of the best ever.

Wen (the evil kid) is an interesting character, he had something happen to him that literal stopped him from being able to grow. I think it’s meant to be a metaphor for not being able to move on from the traumatic experiences of your past. At the end of the episode even tho he’s dying he feels at peace because he could finally move on from what happened to him. Something spike doesn’t understand , he literally says “yea I understand. As if.” when Wen asks him if he gets it.

Jets whole character arch is very sad to me personally, hes a good man, heart of gold, he's deeply kind and genuinely takes care of those around him literally in ways only a mother would at times, and things just dont really go his way. The guy needs and deserves a happy family and all he really has is his bebop crew, for now.

You are absolutely right that this is by far one of the most cinematic anime ever made. The influence from genius filmmakers is absolutely prominent here. The soundtrack is also beyond insane, words can't even do it justice, the quality is just through the roof, every single track. There are no other anime like this. Enjoy it while you can, one of a kind experience. Legendary status. Cheers!
Can't wait till you guys also watch death note, some time in the future. Its absolutely worth it and makes for great discussions and reactions. It also happens to have cinematic quality in a good number of episodes. You'll love it, hopefully its in your radar.

I just want to point out a subtle aspect of the character building for Spike in episode 5. When he is back on the ship, you'll notice he is pulling out his gun, ammo, and grenades from the refrigerator which makes absolutely no sense and is easily overlooked. HOWEVER, when you notice it and ask "why?" the only thing that makes sense is the saying "revenge is a dish best served cold." It makes sense for a character going to confront his rival and uses a mystic/psychic to pursue bounties, like in episode 1. idk i just really like that weird detail

Glad to hear you guys starting to acknowledge the soundtrack more and more, as the OST is legendary in its own right. Originally five discs, a second box set was released a few years later brought the total to ten...and then the movie added two more discs. It's a TON of jazz, blues, rock, pop, and various other styles all composed by one composer. I think it was Mehgan who mentioned getting the soundtrack on vinyl - to my knowledge, it was never released on vinyl, just CD, BUT...the original DVD releases stateside had the discs look like vinyl records, which was pretty hip at the time.

Wanted to address some misgivings, mischaracterizations, and misunderstandings without getting into anything in spoiler territory.
-Spike wasn't asking Jet to tell him about his arm. It was the opposite. He was deflecting to say while they're friends that their friendship doesn't extend to them discussing their pasts. They've both been through things that they don't want to talk about and it isn't the way they normally communicate with each other. Jet doesn't know Spike's history, but he does know that the Syndicates are super dangerous (previous episode tell us that he was part of the ISP or police). Later in the episode, you see Jet telling him a little bit more about what happened to him arm, though he is still vague and you see Jet rush out to go help Spike after Faye calls after he's clipped the bonsai tree (what he perceives to be a bad omen). Jet really values his friendship with Spike beyond the veil of the machismo they normally display together. When Jet goes after Spike he knows how dangerous the situation he's jumping into could be.
-Annie in this case is short for Anastasia. It's not an alias . She says only two people who can call her that. She's referring to the two people in the picture they flashed to. One of them is Mao. I think we can assume that the other person in the photo was her husband and that her husband was likely in the Syndicate.
-Spike wasn't a hitman/assassin so to speak. He was part of a major crime syndicate as I think you realized.
-Faye is described as being really greedy and seeing the bounty she sees it as her ticket to make a lot of money, but she unlike Jet does not recognize the danger involved with the Syndicate. When Spike came for her and she realized he was in legitimate danger she does convey her feelings for the rest of the crew. She calls Jet in a panic in hopes that he can come and assist. She was somewhat sarcastic when she described them as a team, but part of her definitely feels that way.

Both ballard of Fallen angels and sympathy for the devil , are both great episodes that make you feel so many things for these characters in such a short amount of time but also allows the audience to have discussions afterwards about show and themes and go underneath the surface.

  • @Drake844221
    @Drake844221 2 місяці тому +5

This is one of the single most powerful episodes in this show, and that is saying something. Both of the songs as Spike is walking up to the church and as he's falling from the window are just... next level. The composer for Cowboy Bebop, Yoko Kano, did an amazing job from start to finish. One recording that she was involved in back in 2020, during the lockdown, was a kind of... virtual "getting the band back together, plus quite a bit more" of the group that helped realize her music for the show, doing a cover of the closing song The Real Folk Blues. I would strongly recommend watching that after you're done with the series, rather than sooner. It'd even be worth reacting to, I think. I'd even say that the Cowboy Bebop Movie would be worth reacting to if you can get hold of it. But yeah, I just love the William Gibson Cyberpunk energy of the show's aesthetic. The vibe that "for us, this is incredibly advanced and yet slightly retro technology, for them, it is Tuesday." All while they're in a setting that is intensely lived-in. Seriously, if you guys haven't read the Neuromancer trilogy from Gibson, and you enjoy this show, I strongly recommend reading it.
Oh, and I will say that everyone on the crew has a common quality linking them together. At least the three on the ship right now. I'm not saying what it is, but... it is there. Enjoy continuing with the show ;) I'm with you guys for the ride!

Yoko Kanno is a once-in-a-generation-level musical genius, and the fact they could seamlessly weave her very diverse, eclectic soundtrack through the series also speaks to how great of a creative team was behind every aspect of this show.

If the show talks about the past at some point (which, to be honest, it does all the time), then it will always do so from the perspective of the present. There is only one exception and that exception is at the same time a lie.

Spike is the one who betrayed Vicious, he was the one man Vicious trusted and believed in. They were partners in crime since they were kids, then Vicious went off to war, met an Arms Dealer named Julia, fell in love yet had nothing so he betrayed the cause he'd lost faith in to make enough money to marry her and start a new life, but she didn't want a new life, she liked the danger of her job yet married Vicious anyway because he NEEDED her in way no else ever had. He couldn't find work, felt ashamed he couldn't provide the life he felt she deserved, then Spike needed help and Vicious saved his life; leaving Spike to heal and recover with Julia (bad idea in hindsight) while killing everyone that had hurt Spike. Spike and Vicious teamed up again only this time while Vicous felt reborn, Spike started looking for an out and had an affair with Julia behind Vicious back. Vicious discovered this and lost any sanity, any hope for love or trust or brotherhood and now is "an old scarred up Great White Shark wondering why no one's killed him yet" so he just does what he's best at: killing, wanting to die and lose himself in slaughter.
