- A Vancouver-based Indigenous film producer says he was made to feel like a criminal after being turned away from the red carpet at the Cannes film festival - despite being invited to walk it.
His “crime” was wearing traditional moccasins with his tuxedo.
Kelvin Redvers, who is from the Northwest Territories and works in B.C., says he hopes the incident is a learning moment for event organizers. Richard Zussman has more.

Those who oppose him should learn that the red carpet is on their indigenous country which we should respected.
Ikr, power to my people.
he makes an excellent point and its ridiculous and shameful how he was treated
I fully agree. Everyone should be able to wear their traditional clothing or a piece of their clothing if it's part of their culture and not have to worry about being harassed.
@@BakedPotato0630 what makes him exempt from the dress code?
@@Andre8686 Dress code ? There have been women barely covered or wearing the most hideously ugly outfit etc but it's moccasins that are "unacceptable" ? Really? smdh
@@shari9721 There's a dress code. He wasn't conforming. End of story. Stop crying.
Strategically planned on his part to gain attention. That's why he purposely didn't put them on until he was through security. The situation could have easily been avoided if only he had requested in advance since the Cannes do have a dress code.
So really what was their problem? They allow women walking on the red carpet half naked and that's ok but God forbid it if a person wants to represent his/ her culture. I am standing by you and you stick to your guns! Don't feel like a criminal the crime was theirs! I am very upset!
No you're not.

@@QwadLuzr it’s not a “nothingburger” story if you’ve ever been racially profiled. 😐 Other people have had different experiences that you may not have had, that cause them to empathize w different news stories. Your experience isn’t universal.
@@00st307-m Who says it's "racial profiling"? Only those who seek to find racism in everything. Could have been something as simple as footwear vs public liability insurance. This story is meaningless. It's the very definition of a nothingburger. And if you're so easily duped into seeing implied racism in everything, then I suggest your brain is a nothingburger.
Bizzare. Just shows you how elitist it is. Disgusting. A sari would pass, a kilt, it's just elitist bull.
@Daniel Charlebois OH, so he just needed permission to wear mocassins for security reasons? Are you saying that everyone attending has to get security permission for what they wear.? Finding that a stretch.
It happens in a nation promoting diversity , equality and democracy?
Regardless of what a nation will try there are always racist ignorant people in positions of power and authority. Our opposition party in Canada does it all the time because their are many Canadians who oppose diversity and inclusion because they are weak and threatened by it.
how fcking weird and strange would you have to be to call out someone for something like this with that much negative energy, they're nothing like me not down to earth at ALL
I'm glad the hierarchy at Cannes showed some common sense and invited him back, with moccasins, the next day. Cause it's acceptable for women to expose various parts of their anatomy at Cannes and it's considered 'fashionable' and acceptable, but this man, looking classy in a tux while wearing moccasins to highlight his indigenous heritage, is considered to be unacceptably attired. !!!
awful, I'm so sorry they did that to you!
they allow women to dress cheap and ugly and not allow him to show his culture. hypocrite all of them completely
I mean... they can enforce whatever dress code they want, it wasn't about your culture it was about wearing dress shoes...
Exactly 💯 💯
That’s terrible they turned them away for wearing moccasins. Moccasins are great! I wear a pair everyday everywhere. The best place to wear them is a Red Carpet event!🦌💌❤️

That's crazy I remember Kristen Stewart took off her dress shoes and walk barefooted on the red carpet Selena Gomez took off a shoe because she couldn't fit fit them and walk barefoot it at the academy awards so what's up with that
Wow Hollywood is so twisted. So many questionable outfits have been allowed on red carpet events
Cannes Film Festival is in France and it mostly features non-hollywood films, most of which are foreign. The programmers and people who run the festival all reside in France.
Holy shoe batman, they were upset over your shoes? No worries you can wear them at the PNE after all, the biggest shoe was at the PNE and made the newspaper while I was in the hospital having her sister. Nothing wrong with moccasins! they could apologize but they won't. and oh, by the way, my dad wore a kilt at his own third wedding! You got style!
Half of what these women are wearing now a days at these events are inappropriate anyway so what’s the difference? Sounds like discrimination to me!
It is part of his heritage, he should be allowed to wear what he wants. Besides, his moccasins are very pretty
He (or anyone) should be allowed to wear what they want even if it isn't a part of their heritage.

Disgraceful! I am so appalled, especially when I see the amount of senseless skin being displayed on the red carpet.
Shame on them!
I don’t follow Cannes , but how different is it that, I’m assuming, women can wear different styles of dress. Whats wrong with different style of footwear?
Western culture and values..i love when they speak to others how civilized they are..lol
What a joke ! Why didn’t he put on a full formal 1st Nations outfit ! What is he 1/10 Indian ?
It will happen again. FYI
To be entitled, rules don’t apply to me, I’m indigenous.
We are looking for respect of our Indigenous culture (as all peoples are), it’s not entitlement. To look at it that way speaks volumes of your mindset. It’s not okay for a kilt to be accepted and beautiful moccasins are deemed unacceptable. It was unfair treatment and they never should have turned him away for wearing his moccasins, which are actually pieces of artwork and represent his cultural heritage.
Culture discrimination this is extremely disgusting
its footwear discrimination
You are allowed to express yourself but maybe not at a prestigious event .

This is news!
Moccasins are not traditional dress wear. Just another example of an Indian thinking they're allowed to do whatever they want.

So much freedom of expression from the West😉
At least they got it right the 2nd time around.
Yup. And yet the headline/title/thumbnail make it seem like he was never allowed in.

So much for tolerance and acceptance of the different in the countries of "democracy". Nothing new in the west.
So they literally have fashion police over there in France. This is insulting on so many levels. I'm glad they had a talking to, AND rectified the situation quickly, but it never should have happened in the first place.
BTW I am a First Nations man. We have had enough discrimination in the past. It still happens today, but there is also a surging of sympathy for what we went through and a genuine wanting to rectify it :) I am a proud Canadian, AND Cree Nation man. I would not have changed my footwear, and complained until I was let in. It is much more than footwear, we have already had enough wiping out of our culture. My mom is a Residential School Survivor. @@derekwoodford9955 It is no more or less appropriate than a woman wearing a revealing dress, or slacks. He did wear a mostly appropriate suit. Just the footwear was different.

Theyre just foot coverings.
He knew it would be a problem to begin with. He even said he got past the first security checkpoint and then switched to the moccasins but was then stopped at the 2nd security checkpoint. He should have cleared this ahead of time because he knew it would be a problem but instead he tried to slip past security and got called out for it. Sure, he should be allowed to wear his traditional moccasins but he should also respect the traditions of the festival and make sure he talked to them about it first so staff would be aware and there would not have been a problem.
Excuse my ignorance but what exactly are the 'traditions of the festival?'
@@Mumbo_Jumbo_Kiwi.1 Formal dress, tuxedos, etc. It's a good idea to make sure it's not going to be a problem by contacting organizers ahead of time. You will notice when he spoke to them ahead of time before attending the second time, they were (mostly) aware of the situation and other than the one person who tried to stop him (who was overruled by his superior) he had no problems. I still contend he should have been allowed and eventually was allowed to wear the moccasins but if you deviate from the expected norm then expect some push back.

Why does he feel he can wear whatever he wants when there is a dress code? Also, he is in France and to a french person they would look like slippers. Of course he would be turned away. It's got nothing to do with racism or closed-mindedness. It's somewhat shocking how entitled some are to think that they are above rules.
Easy big boy. Don't trip over your racism so blatantly. If it was right why did they apologize and correct it? It's because they had a racist coward like you calling the shots that day, not because it's the rules.

Nice moccasins. Shoulda just called ahead and presented your case then it was up to Cannes organizers to say yes or no. After all it's a French cultural event and a pretty elitist one at that. Regardless, it's their culture, their tradition and their decision.
Should not have to call and ask permission to wear elaborate, beautiful pieces of artwork from your own culture. He looked debonair and appropriate for an event. They were wrong to turn him away. Right is right and wrong is just plain wrong.
I agree moccasins looked great and I wouldn't care if he wore them to an awards show like Cannes. But it's not my award show or my culture, ie, French culture, to dictate too. I feel my suggestion is not so outlandish. In any case feel free to make your argument to the Cannes festival organizers and the French Ministry of Culture.
