PIL perform Anarchy In The UK The Tube. Listen out for the inclusion of Plinkerty Ponk Piano on this version of the Sex Pistols classic performed by John's band after the Pistols PIL.
Agreed. I remember seeing Sam Philips (of Sun Studios fame) in talking about Elvis saying all you should aim for is to be DIFFERENT. Lydon, like Elvis, was exactly that - different and both shocking in their time.
@@marguskiis7711 I wouldn't say all that, but I would say the closest to his style that I've ever heard would have to have been Jello Biafra (but far from the same)
Awesome. I'm sure all the punkers in the house were thrilled. One of my favorite times in music history, so much going on: hardcore, post punk, new wave, goth, rockabilly, early thrash, etc.
I think this is totally in keeping with Lydon’s ethos, as opposed to unintentionally cringeworthy. The Pistols had the aim of getting up people’s noses, and this arrangement proves that doing that to the Pistol’s own fans wasn’t off the table. Plenty of people wanted PiL to be Pistols 2, and it never was going to be, and I take this performance to be a big “fuck you” to them
I dunno, sometimes I feel that whatever Rotten/Lydon does, someone somewhere will defend even the terrible stuff as “Yeah, this is a big FU to the people who expected him to do it well.” I think this is a bit rubbish, personally. But each to their own.
Clearly the very Last song he wanted to be singing at that stage of his career and development. Superb song in its original state. Way beyond Dire here - and I am fairly certain that he would (gleefully) agree.
Lydon always said that the Pistols were "Too Conventional" this version of "Arnachy" is even more conventional Rock N Roll with the piano and top class musicians. He's actually making a very bold statement here. That he's not afraid to acknowledge his past and having been "Johnny Rotten" but also that he's not afraid to take the piss out of what the Pistols were and stood for.
Oh the Liberties of HINDSIGHT what??! We get the 'joke' as u call it..Now. They were ALL/WAYs at their crap'o'gimmickist when Sid was on the tage and Not poor ol Glen.. We often hear John slag all that bands (I'll call it 'MIRAGE') BUT, how many bands you know of make JUST ONE ALBUM and here we are look, still discussing them 42(3)yrs after it!!!? How can anyone deny that Nevermind.... IS one of the best ROCK'n'ROLL albums ever recorded?? John has all the BAGGAGE of Malcom's ab/Use of 4 young men who didnt have the Business acumen, just a pure Will to DO Something. Johnny 'lost' his best buddy in it; trickery like Grundy was most likely a weekly event. Even there u can see his intellect to NOT BE 'Their' puppy. What a Whirlwind for them all in such a short space of time... John will still cry over John Beverly's MIRAGE as 'Sid Vicious' - 1st the mother, then Nancy. Believe me R.Saiyaman; twas no JOKE. AND:- ''..what the Pistols stood for'' you say. WHAT do you mean by that??? It's the *Two Blind Men Feeling Elephants* thing isn't it. The piano keys in a punk song is not original... a lot of the earlier Proto-Punk bands had that sound going on, keys with their distorted guitars because they were following the template of Rock n' Roll bands... hell even Iggy and the Stooges had plenty of that
@@oliverrickard9970 and his voice got alot deeper... I think his voice Is alot more for those later pistol gigs. And I think the pistol songs are alot more demanding than pil songs so that probably had a big influence on how he sounded

I think in all probability he`s actually taking the piss by turning an old Sex Pistols song into a parody. Down the rub-a-dub, all gathered around the ol` Joanna with Chas n Dave and having a right good blitz spirit knees up. Eating jellied eels whilst Les The Barman is heard shouting upstairs to his wife, "Maureen my love , it`s getting a bit busy down here"
I'm going to assume the piano is Jools Holland, who often participates with the bands he has has on his shows. There's likely no 'irony' or 'message' to it. JH likely said "Do you mind if I play piano?" and John Lydon likely said, "Okay."
Yeah he sounds like he swallowed a bag's worth of helium balloons and the entire helium tank they were inflated with. At least his voice improved my the 90s, when the Pistols reformed.
He's flu-ridden here. I remember reading a review of the performance in the Q Magazine years ago, and they buried it. Lydon's voice was usually quite good around this period.
This line up of PIL sound like they have got their musical chops. Were they session musicians he was using at this time? The piano makes it really good!
What a fun song! Token Rebellions are fun it’s always fun to pretend to be a revolutionary until they come for your head with the guillotine good time Rock🎉 rebels are we 😝🤣
sounds better than the pistols! anyone know the year?? Hard to believe ppl were still dressing like the front row after 1979...Mind u I still see the odd herbert who refuses to believe we don't live in a time capsule!!

No one has ever sounded even close to his voice. Unique. Brilliant

I don't get it...
It sounds very Elton John now
Yeah, get rid of that. Also, not sure about the drummers shiny jacket either!
Absolutely love Johnny! The most fascinating, authentic rock star on the planet! I love Pistols and PIL ❤❤❤
This line up really kicked ass live!

Pil doing Anarchy in the UK? Mmm...it's only music but I'd love to hear Lydon's excuse for doing this song.
Saw this on tv at the time a few weeks later i saw PIL in St Austell Cornwall .. he was 3 hours late getting on stage but brilliant
the tube was essential friday evening viewing back then .
"It 's a swindle, it 's a swindle..."

The best version I've ever heard - the piano lifts the song into another stratosphere & Lydon's voice is awesome 🤘✌✊👊
I love this so much
Lydon backed by chas and dave. Brilliant
Yes he an icon. PiL is a fave of mine
Brilliant !
I do not know how I never managed to see this until today. But wow.... hilarious. :D
Still relevant today as it was in 1976 still a outstanding issue on a commercial basis society that we still have got today 🔗❤🖤🔒🖇

2:03 guitar sound respects to studio version way . Not several covers did it
OMG! I love the drummers jacket! Hahaha...!
John Lydon's version of Beefheart's 'tragic band'.
Love!
The piano is great, makes it sound like La Düsseldorf
Like this crowd!!!
kind of glam rocky with piano- almost a boogie t rex thing or roxy
It's a PIL thing...
Well, seeing as Steve was inspired by glam, it isn't shocking that it would have that sound.
It all stems from him hiring a cheesy club/covers band as his backing band during this period.
Very Chuck Berry of him hiring whoevers as his PiL band...50s piano tinkling is hilarious 😂
My best est song by the pistols love the words live the song let's hear the comments then
The music sounds the oposite of what the lyrics means
Love 😘 this OMG HERO JOHN!!!!!
Drip is almost accumulating in my throat just by looking at Lydon in this ,hahha .
I think at the end, looking straight at the csmera, he says 'got that for a giggle!'
@Xiolablu3 is not wobble, the bass player is Lou Benardi.
He da man!!!
HA! this is my 80's.... fuckin love it
the start of the end of Lydon as a creative force - utter bollocks!
I was going to agree with that comment then realised I wrote it! 🐶
Don't think so, pil had some brilliant songs inbetween now and then
This is awesome, but has anyone got them doin' Flowers of Romance from the same show?
hearing this song with piano in it made me laugh kindof but still pil is dope

Fancy John as both head of PiL and Sex Pistols but like PiL just a tad more 😉 this was great.
at 1:22 he gets a bit into The Sex Pistols style- liked that.
I thought it was going to become a medley with "Heat Wave."

Drummer Martin Atkins was with him for awhile, went on to form Brian Brain, Pigface, etc,, and heavily into the industrial scene...
Also played with Lunar Bear Ensemble, and a heck of a nice guy...

This sounds rough, Ilove the Pistols, it all ended in 78 though, good riddence too.
I remember so funny & 100% shit at the same time John with a band full of session players for bit of easy money
This must be from 1983 'cause Louis Bernardi on bass.
