  • Living in Chania on the island of Crete for a month was an unforgettable experience for both of us. Chania is located on the northwest coast of Crete, in Greece. We quickly became captivated by the charming alleyways and Venetian Harbour in the old town. We lived just a 20 minute walk from the Old Venetian Harbour, and walked there many times during our month in Crete. The narrow streets are filled with colorful shops, restaurants with beautiful patios, and charming pubs with happy hour specials. Old town Chania is truly a mix of lively and serene.
We spent many of our nights in Greece exploring the old town of Chania eating amazing Greek food at restaurants like Cafe Remezzo, or just taking in the sounds of the water crashing at the Venetian Harbour. We found ourselves at Avalon Rock Pub when we wanted to chill for a beer late at night, and had a few other bar options in the Jewish district of Chania's Old Town.
We thought this video would be a good way to visually capture what a full day in Chania Old Town would be like, especially for a first time visitor. We included the different sights we believe to be worth exploring, along with a typical dinner and late night beer recommendation.
The Venetian lighthouse is certainly a highlight of this area, so if you only have time to see a few things, please prioritize the lighthouse.
All over Crete you will be be able to find amazing Cretan and traditional Greek food, but the area surrounding the old town harbour genuinely contains some of the most tasty restaurants.
Overall, we were blown away by the beauty of Chania's Old Town and found ourselves wishing for more time there. It's an affordable island vacation option, and by visiting during the off-season, we encountered less crowds and the perfect weather for exploring.
