i would say that mathematically it is worth it. compare a level 1 giraffe to a level 1 swan. in the early game, the +1/+1 stat buff from a giraffe is a difference maker a lot of the time, whereas once you get into late game, +1/+1 on one animal just isnt very much. the value of your gold has gone up in the late game, and it has left the lvl 1 giraffe behind. now compare that to a lvl 1 swan. in the early game, +1/+1 is worth way more that just 1 gold. this is clear because you consider buying an apple much of the time. so giraffe is better than swan right? well, the thing is, in the late game, as the value of your gold goes up, so does the value of the swan! because the swan gives you gold! im not saying that a lvl 1 swan is good late game (of course it isnt) but its a lot better than a level 1 giraffe. realistically your swan will be lvl 2 or 3 by that point. anyway the point is that the swan is unique in that its value increases as the power level of food/animals in the shop increase. you could say the same for goat or sauropod but they are late game units, and so you dont get to witness that increase as much.
For summoning builds, you either go with a fly or with animals that summon when they faint. Either works. But doing both means that there's no room for your fly to trigger and so you don't get much at all

I agree with you for the most part, but there are instances where a bee is preferable. For example, it dodges AOE damage. It also scales better assuming you're going to have a 5th unit eventually anyway.
Feels like NL has been happier recently. Like, in the recent year. Ryan was never miserable, I don't mean to imply that. He just seems a bit jollier recently. Good variety, some collabs, a quiz sometimes, it's a pretty good time for NL content.
I sometimes run an ant if I keep going against snipers. If its the lowest health, a dolphin will target it and if you put it in the back, an alligator will target it. That is the only reason putting an ant in the back makes sense

One up on the fly would also have been +12 +12 from the tiger turkey, absolutely worth it. I'm not sure in which order the one up on sheep works but if it does respawn the sheep, it would have been worth it.
Pilling in front of the ox a second time is 2 gold for 2 attack because you're losing the sell chance. Generally not worth it unless it's a spawn unit.

NL needs a Swan intervention.
Swan is a top tier unit. An extra reroll per turn is cracked and it only gets better with levels. Also has a decent stat spread for Tier 2 imo
